Correction: At 5:15, "1/6 of a second" should be "1/3 of a second".
Q: Why is Level 255 Purple instead of Red?
A: When researching my previous video, I found 3 different sources (including 2 TASes) that all showed Level 255 as red. However, it turns out the 2 TASes actually contained slight mods that disabled game crashes. This is understandable since they were made before the game crash triggers were known, so avoiding them would be an annoying process of trial and error. It turns out that on a TAS of a full vanilla cart, there is a very obscure level desync glitch that causes the glitched colors to switch levels. This causes Level 255 gets a purple palette instead of red.

Thanks to everyone new who's subscribed and started following the scene since Blue Scuti got the first True Killscreen! Things are happening CRAZY fast in the scene right now, and the nature of these videos is they take at least 5-7 days to put together. So there's some groundbreaking stuff that's happened just in the past few days that I wasn't able to cover in detail. I'll be getting into as much of it as I can in future videos, but in the meantime - tune into the top NES Tetris player's livestreams, they're doing some incredible stuff with the game right now!

2nd is amazing! I think the main reason Scuti got such big news coverage had a lot to do with his young age. Being the first is one thing, but being the first at something at the age of 13, AND 30+ years since anyone made the record was what really made the story shine - and the media ate that up. If Fractal or anyone over 18 had been the first to crash Tetris I wonder if it would still make mainstream news.

They knew they'd get engagement from people that can't help themselves commenting about how scuti couldve used his time to play outside or every second person commenting "I beat it, I just didn't do it on camera" when they were referring to the gameboy version of the game which actually had an end sequence and other similar out-of-touch statements. I miss the days where journalism wasn't all engagement-bait. TLDR: Definitely wouldn't have seen as much attention, but they would have pushed it harder in a slightly different direction instead

It would have. But Scuti being what 2decades younger than the gane itself...and fact it had never happened. Yeah, every community needs that. I've mentioned age related stuff somewhere else, not in the sense of years on earth but in the sense of the kind of world they absorbed in formative years and what as a society happens with that. It feels like there's more wholesomeness there in general. People happy for what they like, not for having kicked anyone down. Hence also why all 3 of them were emotional, because it's TETRIS, it's FUN. That said, with some of the negative things going on (eg protests calling for intifada = killing people) maybe I'm cherry picking. But omg I love that community. Makes me kind of feel like doing hardcore Tetris myself.

I went to MIT, the Association of Student Activities (ASA) is pretty generous with funding. It's still a ton of WORK to organize an event like this, so Fractal is absolutely going above and beyond. But in terms of monetary cost, it's probably being covered by the school. MIT likes to make cool things happen. Edit: the venue would generally be the most costly thing and it's definitely 100% free for students to host events on campus (they just have to formally reserve the space).

Being a (somewhat) young gamer, I can perceive many details of gaming/videos with fast elements - in this case, they are the pieces, strategy, and the upcoming block. The way I think these guys were able to make such a huge accomplishment was because they have practiced many specific things that all blend together when playing. For example, you need good timing and a well-developed "roll" as described in the video to correctly position and rotate each piece when they fall. You also need good peripheral vision, since the "next block" is tucked away in the top-right and your eyes need to be towards the center. Two more obvious things, focus and perseverance. Remember, it took the Tetris community a generation and a half to muster up enough of everything here to crash the game. It's gonna take A LOT more skill to 100% the game (mentioned in the video at 11:38) since (spoiler alert) _there are specific setups that crash the game in many more levels._ And no, I'm not any better at tying my shoes either. Just goes to show 😂

I love how Fractal161, who is a rival of Blue Scutti and was trying his hardest to be the first to reach the kill screen himself, cheered Blue Scutti on as he had his historic run. It is such great sportsmanship and support for each other. These guys are highly competitive, but have such respect for the people they are competing against. It really is wonderful to see, and I look forward to seeing how this fine group of people continue to push this community forward.

As someone who has never had any interest in Tetris and has actually never gamed really at all, I have become captivated by all the Tetris news of late. It is fascinating to see how the Tetris community, even at the highest level during the yearly tournament, all support each other and are happy for the winner, even if they came up short themselves. You don't often see that type of sportsmanship during competition. This community seems so genuine -- respect to all the players out there who have dedicated so much time and energy into watching and supporting the game.

I think that one bit is what makes the classic tetris community so fascinating to me, as an outsider looking in - the camraderie between the competitors is beautiful to watch. I got back into tetris because of this channel and what I saw of the community. Granted, I play the modern web version, and can barely sometimes push past half a mil, but still!

I have barely played Tetris in my 36 years but I've been gaming for 30 of them. And I know when history is being made. BlueScuti is a name I'll remember for the rest of my life. What an achievement. And what a breakthrough he achieved, inspiring an entire community to push themselves to new heights. That's the real achievement.

Congrats to Fractal, Blue Scuti & Pixel Andy! 🎉 Incredible to think that the Tetris scene has suddenly been catapulted into the spotlight after so many years, and I hope it brings amazing things for the community. Hearing Fractal thank all the parents in that post-match interview really struck a chord & brought a tear to my eye, because that genuineness & wholesomeness says a lot about the Tetris community as a whole. Can't wait to see what surprises are in store this year, because it feels like you guys & gals are on a bit of a roll (pun intended!) with new discoveries & achievements. 👍

I have two remarks: 1. Fractal got quite lucky on Charcoal; when he entered the level, there weren't any J or S pieces (the two particularly dark ones) on the board, and he didn't get very many of them at all until fairly late into the level. 2. I joined the stream a while before that final run, then left for about a half hour to watch a different video... then rejoined, only to see that Fractal had achieved the game crash not one minute prior. Rip my luck XD

We are now at 3 players. But whats crazy is, PixelAndy (player number three), a few days ago had a game score of 9 million before topping out! The previous record was only 6.9 million!!! Absolutely absurd! Also the triple threat Tetris match between the three game beating players which happened on Tuesday was absolutely bad ass!! Won't say who won, but be sure to check it out!!
