Texan Sings Country Music on Jakarta Streets 🇮🇩

In this video, I am in Kota Tua, Jakarta's Old Town and home of the old Dutch East Indies Company. As I was just getting on my way, I met a few people sitting on the steps in front of the bus stop. They say hello and invited me to sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee. They were super friendly and the old man spoke pretty good English. They then convince me to sing karaoke and I reluctantly agree and sing a couple songs with them. Before we got started though, and you can clearly see in the video as well, the old man said it would only cost 5,000 or 10,000 rupiah per song. That's like $0.70, so not really a big deal. I sing 2 songs, one with the old man, and one by myself. As I'm getting my wallet out to pay, that's when things got interesting and a little awkward. The old man tells me that I have to pay 50,000 rupiah, 40,000 for the singing, and 10,000 for the coffee. I couldn't believe it. That's still only $3.50 and I'm sure they could use the money but still, he just lied right to my face. I still had fun hanging out with them and I wish them all the best but, it just sucks that it had to end on a bad note like that.
Hari ini saya berada di Kota Tua, Kota Tua Jakarta dan rumah Perusahaan Hindia Belanda lama. Ketika saya baru saja dalam perjalanan, saya bertemu dengan beberapa orang yang duduk di tangga di depan halte bus. Mereka menyapa dan mengundang saya untuk duduk dan menikmati secangkir kopi. Mereka sangat ramah dan lelaki tua itu berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan cukup baik. Mereka kemudian meyakinkan saya untuk bernyanyi karaoke dan saya dengan enggan setuju dan menyanyikan beberapa lagu bersama mereka. Namun sebelum kita mulai, dan Anda dapat melihat dengan jelas di video juga, lelaki tua itu mengatakan bahwa harganya hanya 5.000 atau 10.000 rupiah per lagu. Itu seperti $0,70, jadi bukan masalah besar. Saya menyanyikan 2 lagu, satu dengan lelaki tua itu, dan satu lagi sendirian. Saat saya mengeluarkan dompet untuk membayar, saat itulah segalanya menjadi menarik dan sedikit canggung. Pak tua memberitahu saya bahwa saya harus membayar 50.000 rupiah, 40.000 untuk menyanyi, dan 10.000 untuk kopi. Aku tidak bisa mempercayainya. Itu masih hanya $3,50 dan aku yakin mereka bisa menggunakan uang itu tapi tetap saja, dia berbohong tepat di depan wajahku. Saya masih bersenang-senang bergaul dengan mereka dan saya berharap yang terbaik untuk mereka tetapi, itu hanya menyebalkan bahwa itu harus berakhir dengan catatan buruk seperti itu.

I am so embarrassed by these shameless people for tricking a foreigner. I am sure they had scammed many foreigners. Even as an Indonesian myself I got scammed by some handymen respectively because I didn’t negotiate the price prior to the repair. After thing got fixed I asked him how much. Then he gave me some ridiculous number . Nick, you better talk about price before buying. There are too many greedy brainless fools in Indonesia who don’t realize by doing stupid thing, the customer won’t be back for repeat purchase .

Saya punya beberapa teman orang asing dan sebagian mereka sdh berkunjung ke Indonesia dan mereka pernah bilang merasa kecewa dgn tiket masuk di beberapa obyek wisata di Indonesia knp harga tiket bisa 5×lipat untuk turis asing,mereka menganggap itu bentuk diskriminasi. Bagaimana kita bisa berharap orang kecil dijalanan bisa jujur tertib san adil kpd wisatawan kalau pejabat atau orang atasan saja membuat kebijakan yg tdk adil bagi wisatawan. Ask the price before you buy anything, you can ask "mahal" (expensive) atau "murah" (cheap). don't buy something at a tourist place in Indonesia, they will definitely give a high price. no matter local or foreigner. better ask the price first 🙏
