In case you don't know, there are extensive networks of gas and oil pipelines beneath and around Houston, Texas. Houston is a major hub for the energy sector, and many pipelines crisscross the area, transporting crude oil, natural gas, refined petroleum products, and petrochemicals. Types of Pipelines Under Houston: Crude Oil Pipelines: These pipelines transport crude oil from production sites, such as oil fields in Texas, to refineries or storage facilities. Houston is home to many refineries, and crude oil pipelines often terminate here or pass through the area. Natural Gas Pipelines: Houston has numerous natural gas pipelines, linking production fields (such as the Permian Basin in West Texas) to processing plants, storage, and markets both locally and nationally. Petrochemical Pipelines: Pipelines also transport petrochemical products from refineries and chemical plants to distribution centers and other facilities. Major Pipelines in the Houston Area: Keystone Pipeline: This pipeline transports crude oil from Canada to refineries along the U.S. Gulf Coast. Colonial Pipeline: One of the largest refined products pipelines in the U.S., it runs from Houston to the East Coast, supplying fuel like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Texas Eastern Transmission Pipeline: This natural gas pipeline system originates in Texas and supplies the Northeast U.S. Where Do They Go? Local Distribution: Many pipelines within the Houston area transport oil and gas to local refineries and processing plants in the region. Regional Transport: Pipelines from Houston transport fuel and natural gas to other regions of Texas and nearby states. National Pipelines: Houston is a key starting point for national networks that extend to the Midwest, East Coast, and even Canada. The pipeline infrastructure is vast and critical for energy distribution throughout the U.S., and Houston plays a pivotal role due to its strategic location as a major energy hub.

How does this not have a shut-off valve?
@tangyjoe4326Ай бұрын
It was shut off but the gas already in the pipeline between the shutoff valve and the break still has to burn off. They said it would take a couple of hours.
@dennisjohnsen7297Ай бұрын
@@tangyjoe4326 I know what they said. (Don’t mean to sound snarky). Liquid Natural Gas, (LNG) doesn’t burn as a liquid. To keep it as a liquid it is kept pressurized, just like a tank you attach to your gas grill. (Although it’s a different type of gas, propane). Without getting into a long, drawn out science lesson about the combustion of NLG, if there is no air supply, there is no combustion. Granted, we don’t know if this is due a break in the line, either way there should be a shut off valve somewhere. Same as if you turn the gas off at the tank on your grill. The gas in the line would burn off, but you would notice an INSTANT decrease in the pressure/size of the flame. In my opinion, some knucklehead doesn’t know how to turn off the gas. Even if you were to extinguish the flames using the water they are spraying on the surrounding houses, natural gas dissipates quickly in the atmosphere. I just think that this fire is something that should be easily extinguished. The fact that the flame is remaining at a constant height tells me that it is still under pressure.
@tangyjoe4326Ай бұрын
@@dennisjohnsen7297 Sounds reasonable, especially your last sentence. I have no knowledge about this stuff but do know that knuckleheads and incompetence abounds everywhere nowadays so I’m comfortable taking your word for it 😀✌️
@dennisjohnsen7297Ай бұрын
@@tangyjoe4326 I can give you a short history of my experience, but in my opinion, that’s irrelevant. There are people who claim to have “been doing this for 30 years…”. That’s great. Maybe they have been doing it wrong for 30 years. For example, when George Washington got sick the prevailing sound medical practice of the time was blood letting. I don’t imagine that the doctors who came to treat him thought, “Blood letting is insane, but since we’ve been doing it for about 3000 years, so let’s just stick with it.” No. They considered it to be a sound medical procedure. That’s what they did and when he didn’t survive the procedure, their opinion was that they didn’t let out enough bad blood. I am a retired engineer. I dealt with designing and operating power plants for hospitals, ships, military installations, basically self contained systems that are not a part of the infrastructure. Things like gas lines, and there are lots of different types, medical gases, fuel gases, etc. The most important part is the ability to maintain them and redundancy; a backup for a backup. You can’t maintain a gas line if you can’t turn it off/valve it off. Something as simple as a pressure gauge has to be replaced regularly, but you can’t do that without valving it off. There’s also bypasses, but that’s a different story. The best way to figure out if someone is telling the truth, it has to make sense. ❤️
