Most wildland firefighters are seasonal and it is a tad early even for that region. Not a lot of crews are nationally available and aircraft contracts haven’t started yet. Grass fire getting out of hand means wind and not enough resources. It moves fast but is not complex + the area cools quickly.

Yes this is most likely true. It makes "sense" but is also very sad that someone's home of 50 years isn't seen as much of a priority. I get why to an extent, because a nuclear plant will affect people and animals and the land for miles and decades to come, but I sure do wish we had the resources to be able to stop every fire, even the ones that are only a risk to small town folk. When I lived in the mountains in a popular ski resort town, there was a sudden major fire, and it was heading straight for my house and all of the outer ring houses up on a large mountain. Because it was a ski resort town, it felt like the entire universe showed up and they put the massive blaze out before a single structure was ruined. Part of that is being in the vicinity of a town with multiple fire stations, but I truly believe it's also because of the amount of money those ski towns have. Also probably the training too being that the fire stations up there are very well trained in wild fire control. So it's a multitude of things, but I don't think I could deny there are also politics and financial aspects involved, unfortunately.

You see, the prairie commonly gets winds in excess of 60mph, which causes embers from 1 fire to travel doesns of miles away to start other fires and grass burns way faster than trees. Proof of concept exists in New Mexico where they've been maintaining their forests with fire lines ever since smokey the bear. It's weird because New Mexico is a substantially dryer climate than the West Coast, yet they have nowhere near the fire issues while also being a blue state. Because of that bear. We are taking care of each other here. We've got several locations set up where other farmers are dropping off hay to feed animals. Several food trucks have gone and cooked for fire crews. My wife and daughter went and bought supplies the girl scout troop sent. Around here we help each other and don't wait for the government. All the government may supply is some subsidized loand for the farmers to rebuild herds, fences or feed.
