Luke was my dads best friend. I’m proud to say he was my godfather. He was a down to earth nice bloke. RIP loved him so much and I love him singing. This was written by the legend that is Phil Coulter. An amazing song writer. Thanks for reacting to this.

@@heffo67 I like it, I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece but it’s fine for the reason it was written. If you were to look at all the songs he has written it would surprise you. Phil is an amazing song writer, piano player an average singer.

@@Cath1027 I was a bit grumpy last night. I am very familiar with his music. He has written some fine songs and songs I really like too. It was unfair of me not to mention that. I just hate 'Ireland's Call'. It terrifies me that it might be adapted at other sporting events.
@Cath1027 Жыл бұрын
@@heffo67 as a song it’s okay, as an anthem it’s not. I live in Dublin and Ireland has its anthem but I feel the people who play from Northern Ireland are not represented by that anthem. I wish there was a better way of representing all the players. As the only sport that north and south play together I doubt it’ll ever be used at any other sporting event. You could always see Rory Best didn’t respect either.

Welcome to the folk music scene. Where many of the songs are actually about something. Often the truest form of history available. Rather than mindless I, All about me and my relationship songs, with hook lines repeated over and over again, to an almost non existent tune. Luke was one of a kind, an incredibly passionate singer. You might also have been aware of the brilliant, tenor banjo playing of Barney McKenna? Those rendezvous, minus the black powder etc. Are very descriptive of the mainly participatory folk music festivals, that's have been held for decades, all over the place. Thanks so much for reviewing that song.

I honestly never expected to see anyone react to this. The lyrics are strong with a lot of Irish songs. The Fields of Athenry (about the Great Hunger), Grace (about the wife of one of the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising), Isle of Hope Isle of Tears (about Annie Moore, the first immigrant to set foot on Ellis Island), Amhrán na bhFiann (in English: The Soldier's Song, the Irish National Anthem.) I absolutely recommend all of them for reactions. This is the best month for it, after all.

Hearing this song again now, I would like to dedicate it to the Ukrainian people.. as an Irish person one has to admire the Ukrainians 'bruised, never broken' spirit.. so many of their cities and towns destroyed by Putin, so many killed and wounded, so many displaced. I remember when all the Irish refugees fled South to Dublin. I was final year at school and the school encouraged us to go to the RDS in the city centre where the refugees were brought in the initial chaos before finding accomodation for them all.. and sign up to help a family. My friend and I were not able to take a family to live in our homes, but befriended a family instead.. which meant that we visited them in the army camp where they were accommodated, got them things they needed, took them out or for meals in our homes etc. Their house had been burned down the night they fled and their little 2 year old boy had stopped speaking since that night and didn't speak for months afterwards. When I saw all the millions of refugees flood from their towns and villages out of Ukraine at the start of Putin's brutal invasion of their country and neighboring countries mobilizing rapidly to provide for their basic needs, it brought that time of refugees from Northern Ireland fleeing South all back and how traumatic it was for them. My thoughts to all refugees from any country who are forced by violence from their homes and their way of life..

This is a fantastic song, but this version isn't great. I'm not sure if the guitarist, Ronnie Drew, simply played it wrong by accident (they were all heavy drinkers) or if this was an earlier rendition they later elaborated on, but literally every other recording if this I've heard is different to this, and far more moving. If you're revisiting this, I'd definitely recommend checking the studio recording, with accomplanying piano, or literally any other live version.
