Watched all 3 parts. Thanks for sharing your story with me. I was surprised to hear you came up with the Dave Ramsey debt snowball pay off plan by yourself; it shows me how your mind works. I like your work ethic(contractor SHOULD clean up after him/her self after THEY complete THEIR JOB-THEY are the ones who made that mess)...BTW smack your camera guy for yawning in part 2 because all 3 videos were not boring, they were motivators for me. Those that want to make it in this world will find these videos educational. PS messy work area, not being on time and lazy people in general are my pet peeves. You do have an addiction; you are a workaholic! I was an electrical contractor till 2006 when the bottom fell out locally. One of the last jobs I bid on was a spec home and the builder told me he wanted me back in before he painted that way he could fix the drywall from where I had to move boxes! I was puzzled the only time I have had to move a box is if something changed between the time I put it up and trim time. I still look at box covers to make sure all the screws are straight, I was at my nieces new house and the was a three gang box the screws were ever which way after a while I had to get up and straighten the cover and screws up my nice turned to her husband and said I told you he would do that!
@Garth20115 жыл бұрын
Thank you for being this way. The box cover screws should be lined up the same either horizontal or vertical, I prefer vertical. What's more, getting the switches and receptacles flush with the covers is important too. I've seen them too deep and too shallow and they look wrong every time. Also, it's been a habit for some contractors to use their claw hammer as a drill or saw to cut out remodel boxes etc. They respond when asked why they do that is "the drywall/painter guy will follow" up. I always say, on a remodel, why would you create work for a painter when you can do the job without damaging the wall ? Most of them say it's too time consuming and usually there is a patch and painter person coming in on the job. That's like driving cross country and filling your gas tanks only 3/4 full at each gas stop.

Subs typically aren't in the industry for pride in their work in my brief experience at 23. my bossed summed it up by saying "subs always try to do the maximum amount of minimum work." How fast can they get in and out of a jobsite so they're onto the next and they make more money "completing" all these different jobs. Burn bridges everywhere you go in a region so big you'll rarely see the same people twice. Especially the whole not wanting to clean up after themselves. We're a home remodeling company in Texas and have to come in before to prep for them and afterwards to clean up after them. I'm working on starting my own subcontracting business with some associates beginning with industrial strength Poly flooring for garages, shops, patios and general commercial and residential applications. If you work hard, take pride in what you do and treat your clients right, eventually it will be recognized and you'll take that next step somewhere. At least that's the goal.

Very good story. I watched all 3 episodes and enjoyed your story. You seem like a very decent and honest man, and I can see why you have become a successful person. To bad most contractors aren’t like you. Unfortunately for most people who have to hire a sub par contractor we find out the hard way, that not everyone is honest and caring about the customer. But just like you said about the word spreading because you did such a great job, the word spreads also about the contractors to stay away from. I listen to Dave Ramsey and believe in ideas too, and it’s great that you run your business that way. You’ll probably sleep 😴 better at night not owing anyone money. And that makes you a better contractor when you don’t have to do it for the money 💵.

Another humble tip: To minimize drywall cracks, I highly suggest to put in your "Scope of Work" for all windows and doors to be "picture framed" which means NO drywall joints at the corners of all windows and door and any passage way. This type of installation will help minimize drywall cracking which a majority of times occurs at window and door corners. If the drywall contractor does not like it because it uses more sheets of drywall, then they bid accordingly or they go away.
@Garth20115 жыл бұрын
Sad that a drywall guy would bother to do a job that way in the first place. You either know your job or you don't...If the job is good enough to do, it good enough to do it right.

Great, great story, all 3 episodes, chasing american dream and making it work at it's best, you talk about life lessons, hard work and determination. Me myself, an emigrant, although retired now and I never listened to Dave Ramsey, best advise you can give is to be debt free, period. I know it is not easy but in time, it is doable and best feeling that comes with it, "don't live beyond your means" , "don't buy if you can't afford" - these everyone needs to live by, golden rules of being debt free. As for construction or any "other" business, always, always do your best, do job right (straight angles, leveled 100% of the time, no corner cutting, paying attention to details, etc.), it pays off in a long run, customers appreciate it and business grows, way too many contractors out there doing half ass jobs and wonder why they go bankrupt. Keep up great work and if I lived in Texas and needed contractor, you'd be definitely the man I'd hire.

Here is a humble tip: Use "Scopes of Work." If you want to hold your contractors accountable, use "Scopes of Work" as an attachment to every single contract you sign. Have each contractor sign and initial EACH page for your "Scopes of Work." I use to be on staff with Shea Homes and Lewis Homes for almost 20 years so I am very familiar with development and construction. Your "Scopes of Work" dictate the way YOU want your job done including picking up the trash each contractor generates. The electricians will use "torpedo levels" on each switch plate and cover plate if you want it done right. You put all of this in your Scopes of Work. Your Superintendents will LOVE you when they have leverage (Scopes of Work) over the contractors instead of back charging people. I work as an expert witness in construction and teach this stuff at the local college. I love your videos !!!

Another humble tip: Think about creating (if not done already) a "Homeowner's Manual" for your clients. The homeowner's manual provides maintenance tips, color schemes for paint, emergency numbers to contact contractors. It also spells out your warranty. If you have already thought of these ideas, then great and I hope this helps. You are on the right track and I have only seen a dozen videos or so of yours. Actually, I have never posted on KZbin but I thought I could help you out in my own humble way. I can send you a sample foundation "Scope of Work" for you to use as a template to improve upon or any trade you might need to build a residential structure. Free. Yeah. Just post an email address and I'll send you a copy. The Garcia Cafe in Dilley has great menudo when I ate there 20 years ago.

I just watched all three and feel like we lived a parallel life in many ways. The last place I had built the contractors hated my guts, because I called them on their bullshit and made them do it right. It’s really sad to see people to do such a poor job and expect to get paid for. When I had my business my motto was do what you said when and how you said it and be on time. I did temperature and time sensitive freight to Alaska for years and had a 100% on time record. It didn’t come easy, but I did what I promised. People don’t want excuses. Yes it snows a lo or it’s forty below, but that’s just part of the business.

Thank you. I spent a week in Nashville a few years back when I took the EntreLeadership class from Dave Ramsey. I’ll talk about that soon. :)

We are working the baby steps right now. Just got the mortgage to go. I guess we're saving for a piece of land and for y'all to build us a barndo. Lol. Love your product.

Been around building my entire life as excavation and was a general contractor as well for a while and I feel your pain. When you are particular it's nearly impossible to find contractors to do work to satisfy you. It's frustrating.

When you consider the cost of training employees who go on to work elsewhere, think of the cost of not training employees who stay with you. It is better to train and loose than to never have trained at all. You are an inspiration to many KZbin watchers. Thanks

Man I’d love to work for you!! We seem to think alike, work alike, reload somewhat alike (I don’t have quite all the fancy equipment you do lol but use your techniques), and I’d love to say we shoot alike, but that’s a stretch. I watched all three of this series and feel intrigued. I follow your shooting channel, and somehow it brought me here. Keep up the great content on both channels.
