In this episode of Opel GT How To, I walk you through the process of removing the instrument cluster in my 1970 Opel GT.
This will be a multipart series that will include the removal of the dash pad and heater service as well as some reassembly tips.
When the other parts get finished I’ll post them here!

You do not need to remove any of the gauge mounting nuts to remove the dash. FIRST, disconnect the battery. Remove all external screws, remove two bottom mounting screws,(normally 10mm socket needed for the bottom bolts) remove speedo cable, remove turn signal flasher, remove center shifter tray and center parking brake tray. (screws under ashtray) remove the plastic trim around the base of the steering column (two screws, careful this part is brittle) Drop steering column being sure to remove two plugs going into fuse box. GENTLY pull the top part of the instrument panel DOWN AND OUT first so that the mounting points for the gauges clear the metal clips that that the external screws go into. (some years of the GT have push pin retainers that need to be pulled out) This panel will crack very easy so gentle is the word here ..... Great video, but I need to stress to people that have not done this before, GENTLE is the word because this panel is old, brittle, and if you have the OE radio in it, the radio is very heavy and will cause the panel to crack if your not careful. You will need to pull all the plugs off of the fuse box to fully remove the gauge panel. Further there is a ground wire behind the radio, and the antenna wire. There are also wires going to your parking brake, and seat belts that will have to be removed. The wires going to the amp gauge need to be removed. Best to get a good service manual, read it first and take notes of the specific steps for your particular year of GT. Your steering column if original will have shear bolts in them that will have to be drilled out. You can use regular bolts or obtain new shear bolts, the specs are in the manual when you re-install the column. I have owned and rebuilt 13 Opel GT's over a period of 40 years. While you have the panel out, NOW is the time to inspect and clean ALL wire terminals and replace all the lamps. Tarnex on a Q-tip works great for cleaning the contacts, Windex on a Q-tip to clean off the Tarnex and oxidation residue is advised before re-installing the wire terminals. Opel GT's are prone for grounding issues so clean,, clean, clean. Nice to see a young man doing a video on these cars. Us old timers don't bend so well anymore to make the videos.....Keep up the great work and interest in the GT. Great little car and it would have came BEFORE the C3 if it were not for the French builder joining the national strike and not manufacturing the cars on time. The C3 Vette was after all called PROJECT OPEL.
