Here are a few good hints for Goodwill shopping: Take AA and AAA batteries for testing something (like toys), light bulbs (in cushioned boxes) to test lamps, and a black light (to check if something glows (green uranium). And take a battery backup for your cell phone.

That is probably a black bog cat carving from Ireland. "Ireland's bogland was once home to the much-sought-after black bog cat, which was said to roam the vast bogland near the shores of Lough Neagh. It was a larger-than-usual cat and lived on insects and small animals, and was said to bring luck and great wealth and happiness to those whose path it crossed. Similar stories are told about a large black cat seen in the bog lands in midland Ireland that, with its intelligent cunningness, always evaded capture."

If I see a picture (art )with archival (UV) glass, I'll start to look closely at it. It's expensive glass and typically people only pay for it for expensive prints. It's easy to spot-- if you see it from the side, it looks like it has a white film on it, from the front, if you look closely, you'll see a pattern in the glass.

I am not afraid to ship anything. Actually, its like a challenge! I shipped a 18" blown glass vase to Porta Rico thru USPS and it made it there in one piece! I used the USPS Fragile Handling that cost $10. All i did was put it in a good box and filled it with Packing Peanuts and sent it on its way! The Fragile sticker has the driver to handle the package by hand and it made it there with no problem. It was a signed blown glass art vase. I cant remember the artist now but it made it! I was happy!

When I find something that doesn't have a price tag on it at Goodwill, I ask someone at the checkout to price it and hold it for me as I finish my shopping - they will usually do it for me, or they track me down in the store to give it back to me. Some thrift stores won't put a price on it that day. Maxfield Parrish is one of my favorite artists.

Anyone else seeing an increase in brass items? Beginning to see more nice brass pieces. Smalls, trays, and lower quality candle sticks. I keep a small magnet w/ me. Brass is not magnetic, BUT neither is pot or white metal which plates well and often was brass plated. Older items...check the worn or friction areas of the piece where the plating is worn. It will show silver or dull grey.

For some reason large plush put me off but I sold one the other day, not huge, 18", It went into a large poly mailer so easily and I pushed the air out before sealing it. Now I will stress as it goes thru GSP on to the UK. Geez, big, bulky and GSP in one sale! I hear they sometimes re-pack the item before sending it on its way, what a waste of a good poly mailer!

I'm always fascinated by the fact that in the US you all seem to decorate for things like Easter and Autumn, Spring etc. We dont really do that in the UK. Christmas yes, and more recently, halloween is coming up, but the rest? I wonder if it is because you maybe have more space to keep decor packed away? Nobody I know puts out different ornaments etc through the year

Agree. The USA public holidays are marked as a Holiday. Time to stop and reflect and express both yourself and your house/ yard. Then Annual Leave from work is a Vacation and is sadly much shorter than UK AU NZ. I have appreciated this as I have travelled over the years to the US. Houses ( not all) have attics or basements to store. Wirh regards Tassie Joy

The boy kissing the girl print is in every thrift store, sold at Homco Home parties. There is a huge glut of that cheap junk out there. One clue that something isn't worth much if anything is when you see it, in every thrift store you walk into. Maxfield Parrish is an excellent artist, lots of deep blue in his stained glass and paintings. I would buy it all if I ever saw it in a thrift store, very popular artist.

Lamps can be tricky because of the shades and hardware that go with them. If they are missing the harps, finials, shades, and any of the parts, keep that in mind. It's not always easy to find the right-sized harp for a lamp that will fit a specific shade. In particular...I personally HAVE to have the lamp and the shade next to each other to make sure the proportions fit and they go well together. Watch out for the ring-type lamp shade holder because the shade has to be exactly the right size to sit on the top of the frame. BTW - I loved the wooden sort of hour-glass shaped lamp with the hob-nail look next to the one you picked up. I think it would be perfect for a man's desk or an older son's room to add some masculinity.

I specialize in glass, oil lamps and vintage electric lamps. BE very PICKY. I bought a slag glass lampshade for 10.00 and sold it for 620.00. I bought two old brass wall sconces for 25.00, sold that set for 870.00. Watch for cloth covered wires to determine age, but some have already been rewired. Big money in vintage lighting. You left behind two Pier 1 Tuscan salad plates, no longer made, 10.00 each on average. Also, from Pier 1 and selling even higher is the Ming pattern in cobalt blue and white, a cereal bowl or dinner plate can fetch 25.00. Learn the basic silver marks, and wear a jeweler's loop with light around your neck. I just found 300.00 in Gorham Sterling Silver trays at a thrift store, I paid 399 for the set of 13.. Also found a Baccarat crystal figure for 3.99, value is 50.00 or more.
