I would have mounted it on top of the bucket. The bottom side of the bucket should help by supporting the bale from bottom..

I have to say that when I saw you with the bucket mount hay spear I thought to myself that isn't going to work. Glad you got the real deal. How are you going to fix the hole in your bucket that you placed in it for tbe hay spear?

It might come in handy for something else, but if the hole begins to bug me... I'll just weld it shut.

You say that you can use this as a fixed-width pallet fork. If that's the case, then why could you not use real pallet forks as a hay spear, thereby eliminating the need for a hay spear altogether?

It's much more stable to 'stab' the hay roll with a spear, instead of getting under it with forks. Now... Until I bought this spear, I DID use a pair of forks to move the hay, but this is much better. Also, sliding UNDER the hay roll with forks can cut the strings. If you're just moving it around, you don't want the strings cut. Here are the Forks that I have used for years: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXLYpX55a72kmpY A pair of true pallet forks are nice, and I would LOVE to have some, but that toy will have to wait. In fact, if this spear works out, I may not have to buy any forks.

I guess I wasn't clear with the phrasing of the question. What I meant was can you not "stab" the hay roll with one of the forks (or both if you have them closer together). Even though the forks aren't as "pointy" as a spear, there's not a lot of cross-sectional area to them when "stabbing". Even if the hay roll is densely packed, I would expect that the weight of the roll would be great enough to allow the fork to penetrate almost as well as a "spear".

The rolls are usually very tight. I think it would be hard to penetrate without a "point"... but who knows...

I agree need the point to penetrate while makes no difference if using for a pallet "spear" ALSO PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU LEAVE TRACTORS WITH HAY SPEARS ATTACHED PARK IN A SAFE PLACE AWAY FROM LIVESTOCK AND TRAFFIC THAT SPEAR HAS NO MERCY!

I don't remember the model and make. I bought it at my local Kubota dealer. As to how it's holding up... I love it! The TSC Bucket Spear did not work for me. The new forks are great. No regrets at all.
