How did you get this job? This is something I’ve wanted to peruse as a career and wondered if you had any tips?
@AlexisVeille Жыл бұрын
@@Moneychestwowow I'm a freelance designer and I started by making fan-made posters on my own until some distributors luckily noticed my work and commissioned a few projects. I'm not full-time designing posters, but it's what I'm trying to do (hence the "junior"). My tips would be to 1. Practice, 2. Make things you actually enjoy. You're really into that niche movie that no one around you seems to have seen? It's fine! It shows your tastes and might interest people with the same taste as yours
@Moneychestwowow Жыл бұрын
@@AlexisVeille Thanks so much for the quick reply and tips! How did your work get noticed and was it a one off project or was it someone stumbling on your portfolio? Also how did you start growing a consumer base freelancing, are you seeing more new customers or multiple people coming back to you? Also did you have any “formal” design training like a 4 year degree or is all your stuff taught?

Smudge Tool works wonders. I make extensive use of this tool for many things, such as sharpening pixelated images or lines. One, use soft brush set to reduced opacity. Two, gently smooth out pixelated areas, making sure to keep as much detail as possible. Three, use sharpening tools to boost detail back up. Unsharp Mask (Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask) and various sharpen/contrast boosting tools available in Camera RAW work great here. Can't express how many times the smudge/sharpen method has saved many otherwise terrible images from the scarp pile. Cheers!! :)

this is insane, since last Thursday, I have been trying to get this effect on some digital paintings I have been working on. I wanted them to look a bit more "painterly" and less smooth if that makes sense, I have spent close to 16 hours over the weekend playing around and got some great results using different brushes and effects, however watching this video makes me wanna cry...lols because this just seems like the straight forward way of doing it. Thanks so much! I love you and hate you....lols

Interesting. Thanks. I ventured into a similar territory some tears ago without realizing its potential, in how you used it here, when I was asked to restore someone's relative's old photograph that had creases and damage, missing parts. I employed partly minimal smudge tool techniques with tonal pointillist techniques to disguise the creases and fill in the missing parts. This is actually an inspiring video for me in terms of other work I have in mind.

I have been using the smudge tool for this for years, but never with a brush tip like this.. Which is pretty stupid, because to get a decent result like your, you have to do five times as much strokes. That is a great takeaway! It really is a wonderful tool. Also for blending elements in collages, manipulating masks, suggesting hair or grass. Great to have it in the spotlight!

Hi Brady, another nice and useful tutorial! I had actually come across this technique quite some time ago, but meanwhile had almost forgotten about it, so this has been a welcome reminder! I've always felt that due to the manual process involved it tends turn out a bit more convincing than ”automatic” procedures with a similar aim that are using Photoshop actions. And you finally sort of mention it towards the end but I, too, think this technique (as it emulates natural media) goes very well with some paper or canvas textures that additionally stress the “analog-ness“ of the the whole thing (besides the brush marks).

A suggestion, that other teachers of this process does to REALLY strengthen that painterly look, is to make a copy, go into filters, into filter gallery and then go with Paint Baubles filter. Correct the strength and sharpening as you see fit for yourself, but make sure the baubs is seen. Then do a quick default Smart sharpen on it and you will now have a starter picture that will really end up strengthening your look in the end :)

Hi Brady! It's great that you tell about ways to incorporate digital illustration tools in your workflow! May I suggest that you check out some other tutorials from digital artist (concept art, illustration etc.), and find ways to mix your techniques with theirs. You're sharing some unique knowledge, and this one about smudge tool that I use a lot in paintings made me realize that there might be a lot of untapped potential in a crossover between your techniques and digital artists'.

In general I feel like I don't know a lot about what the brush options do and which tools can be combined with which brush options. A lot of people I think are unclear on basic stuff like how can I get a brush to taper off to nothing, how can I get it change colors, how can I get chunky-looking buildup like real life thick oil strokes? Is a lot of functionality missing without a tablet? How do I Greg Rutkowski without AI? Would be cool to see more stuff showing off brushes used in non-brush contexts, and along the way maybe you can show some of these things.
