The Detonator is basically the long lost child of the Thermal Thruster. The Detonator deals decent damage with good mobility while the Thermal Thruster deals no damage but grants great mobility. I do hope they slightly buff the Detonator in the future so you don’t take as much self damage when flare jumping as a few flare jumps can make you lose a lot of health or even kill you pretty quickly.

Thermal thruster is good for longer distances and more risky flanks on open maps, you can also bomb people with it and take them not surprise. They both do the same job but differently. Each one is situational

I've been 'Detonator Master Race' since it came out back when it was balanced more towards damage than mobility (45hp minicrit - yes please) and it's always been good. Used well you can savage any 125hp class and severely mess with any explosive class.

I really enjoy using the detonator for harassing snipers at long range. The afterburn makes it hard for them to aim and I'm able to get closer without worry of being headshot

and backburner is decent, but if it becomes the meta it is very easily countered, that is why it's not widespread. phlog is good, though more situational. flame thrower and degreaser work for the current meta and are all-round useful.

The Powerjack is good at gap closing because you can select it for a tiny moment, jump, and switch back to your primary (most effective with the Degreaser). This gives you 0.1 second of damage vulnerability, but a jump with a move speed faster than Medic. Do this repeatedly and you can close gaps while avoiding the downside. Also, the Scorch shot can clear sticks as well. The only important difference between the Detonator and the Scorch shot is more jump height versus more reliable hits.

I just got a strange detonator like three days ago, And it has become my new favorite thing just because of all the stuff he talked about here. Thing is crazy good in the right hands. That paired with Dragon's Fury and Stock Axe is a solid class to have in almost every gamemode.

Additional upsides of the Detonator: 1. Easier to spam our enemies on high ground, compared to the Scorch Shot. When the SS is at an angle below the opponent, it’s about as effective as a regular flaregun at spam. The Detonator’s active detonations allow you to hit people from any angle. 2. Burst Mobility. The Thermal Thrusters gives you mobility, but it’s slow as shit. You’ll never ambush a good player with it twice. The Detonator lets you play like a pseudo-soldier in a DM situation. This is incredibly powerful. Because of #2, the Degreaser is the best primary to complement it with. You can maximize your unpredictability in a fight, which lets you fight evenly with good scouts and soldiers. Combine this with the other utility of the Pyro in general, you have an actually decent class.

scorch shot does destroy stickies as well. so "utility" is useless, the detonator is better for movement true, scorch shot is better for crowd control. (long range knockback on ubered target, whacking a heavy out of a choke point.) it is true, however that the detonator is undervalued.

Well, for THAT particular Pyro, it has the Fire Axe. Like, you can argue "But..." with a lot of weapons, but you can't argue that with the Third Degree. Even though it's only a slight one, it's still like, the only straight upgrade in the game. I remember when the Backburner was hated. Back before the Phlogistinator said "Hey, let me try that!" and didn't have airblast. Although the Backburner might've gotten airblasts before or after the Phlogistinator appeared. I don't know. I don't care to check.

Also, in my ranking list the Backburner is #2. It's really good in right hands but I find the stock Flamethrower to be the best flamethrower overall due to its versatility as you can't go wrong with it, it works in every possible scenario. Lower damage, also you need to be at or above the level of your target with the scorch shot whereas airbursts allow you to use it on targets higher up than you. They're basically similar weapons though...

Youre getting it wrong. This is like going over how similar the black box is to a direct hit. Theyre meant for different things and should be treated as such. The detonator is an amazing flanking tool with a bit of damage, while the scorch shot is a spamming weapon that hardly does any damage and doesnt really get anything done

I'm sorry but I just don't like the detonator. I either use the thermal thruster or the normal flare gun. I see no real use for it, sure you can flare jump a bit higher but do you REALLY need that? Also the other secondary options are miles more fun to use in my opinion - insta killing someone with a flare gun crit and becoming an incredibly mobile pyro with the thermal thruster is way more fun that preforming a flare jump. But that is just my opinion, I can see why people like the detonator but it is not for me.

I do think the Detonator is a decent secondary weapon. It has the similar function to the Scorch Shot. But you get more mobility to it. But your gameplay was cancerous.
