Note for the reserve shooter It is quite useful at discouraging enemy soldiers and demos from blast jumping around a lot making it handy to soften up targets that are approaching you so you have more than enough ammo on your other weapon to finish them off once they land

The gunboats are widely used "just because", while on certain maps they're rather useless. The shotgun is amazing cause it's simply reliable. Sometimes though the shotgun isn't the best idea, for instance, a roamer or anyone using the beggar's bazooka it'll just be suicide. Adaptibility is key. Great video btw! very underrated.

Also, shotgun gives you some valuable breakpoints, particularly with Engineer's buildings. I'll combo Engi buildings all the time, waiting for my rocket to land on it before blasting it with my 12-gauge. Very effective against mini sentries or buildings getting tanked.

That intro clip with the kritzkrieg, that's the reason I went back to the shotgun from using banners. Swapping from conchBox to a basically stock loadout allowed me and my brother to carry a whole attack/defend match. From there I started mixing it up a little with different primaries when playing solo; the Black Box returned to prominence as my go-to but I've also rekindled my love for the Cow Mangler.

i sometimes run rocket jumper with the panic attack and it's a lotta fun since it's the easiest way to close the distance with a shotgun. the downside is losing to sentries harder than scout but it's a small price to pay to use rocket jumper without epic failing at market gardens

The shotgun on soldier is really good, mainly if you want to play more independently, it allows you to have better uptime in fights which 4 rockets might not be enough. Although for frontlining the banners are so much better, since sometimes you gotta be the anchor for your team to be able to make a play. If your team is very self suficient then the shotgun is just an upgrade to you, if they aren't it starts feeling a bit useless. Personally, I run a Liberty Launcher + Panick attack combo, which can deal with most classes in a decent way, it's nowhere close to be meta but it's fun, and it shows how strong the shotgun is when it covers the weaknesses of the Liberty Launcher really well and whenever that feels like it's not working I just switch to stock with one of the banners, the gunboats always seemed really overrated to me when there is teleporters or medics in your team, only exceptions are if you are playing with the Beggar's Bazooka or there's no support classes in your team

My play style with soldier is most offensive, and I'm usually left with one enemy left with no rockets loaded. The shotgun is just more useful to me instead of the banners and gunboats. Especially with the reserve shooter and panic attack.

as someone who heartily believes that there is no general purpose secondary even close to the gunboats (not even bats, fight me) i can definitely sympathise with your point of view here, especially what you said about the shotgun being situationally better on certain maps. i like to call these maps “waddle maps” because there’s no real reason to rocket jump most of the time. think steel, dustbowl. in these maps i see no reason to use the gunboats, and because teamwork is a lie i think the shotguns carve a very strong niche there
