Yeah but they feel Terrible Ergonomically at least compared to Scar and M4-M16A4.
@ke6ziu4 жыл бұрын
@Gerrie Coetzee the G3 is a good, and reliable rifle; recoil is a bit harsh, when compared to the FAL. The FAL has a gas system that reduces the recoil, along with the buffer in the buttstock. The G3, uses a roller locked, delayed blowback action. The gas is ported out through a fluted chamber, forcing the bolt out of battery, then the recoil ejects the casing. If that buffer spring weren't there, the recoil would be worse! If you don't like the ergonomics of the G3, swap out the black furniture with the GI furniture!
@jimir684 жыл бұрын
The fluted chamber in the G3 is only there to provide a cushion of gas around the cartridge case to prevent a hard extraction it does not force the bolt out of battery it’s a delayed blow back weapon not a gas operated weapon. The pressure created by the burning the of powder in the cartridge not only forces the bullet up the barrel but also tries to push the bolt head backwards. The rollers in the bolt head prevent this from happening initially however the pressure on the bolt head eventually causes the rollers to be pushed into the bolt head and against the locking piece. This locking piece must move 5mm to the rear to allow the rollers to move into the bolt head and hence unlock the bolt which moves to the rear, extracts, ejects, cocks and then the recoil spring forces the bolt mechanism forward so it feeds and then locks into battery ready for the next round to be fired. The G3 is not a pleasant rifle to fire, felt recoil is considerable, one thing you must avoid is placing your face right up against the cheek piece of the butt, if you do then you’ll end up with facial bruising or at worst a broken tooth. The main flaw of the G3 and the rolling locking system is fouling. This system creates a lot of dirt in the roller recesses and around the bolt head and the mechanism of the firearm, it’s a very dirty gun, the worst I’ve ever come across. You have to keep it scrupulously clean or the gun will start to malfunction and those roller recesses are a bugger to get at to clean. It’s one gun I would never take into battle.

Compared to other 7.62x51 full auto rifles, the recoil was light. I fired (believe it or not) a Galil 7.62 in full auto and it was very difficult to control. I was getting about 1.5 MOA with iron sights, though. Remember this was back in the 90s and the rifle was several years old by that time but it fired beautifully. Full auto 7.62x51 rifles are a bitch. There is not a single one with mild recoil; the recoil on them is just varying shades of brutal.

The G3...hands down. When I was in the US Army in 1978, we got the opportunity to qualify on Bundeswehr guns...among them the Gewehr 3 or , G-3 as we know it. I fell in love with that piece on the second round downrange. Qualified "experten" Gold Schutzenschnurr (shooting lanyard). I've shot all manner of military firarms, but the G-3 will always be my "first love".

+Mike Halvorsen yeah i hear you, i was 4 years in the bundeswehr, and i allways had my G3 near by me. As they introduced us the G36, i needed only the look of the ugly plastic and the caliber, and i knew i would hate this one. If i had the choice i was allways going with the G3... In my training i had one from 1965, and this one shot as good as new, ofc, you need good care but in the end only one thing matters. throw both out of a heli in 200 meters, and look which one you can use after this. ;)

I was in the BW tooin the early 90ties (Luftwaffe) here my summary of G3: good: accurate, reliable, good range, powerful bad: heavy, long, charging handle placement, not so good at close range
@leonaldobrum7 жыл бұрын
@Underground Sounds: Yes, heavy, so many miles I carried mine afoot, I should know :D About the range, I could hit a 1-meter wide target at 400 meters using only the iron sights - not too bad, I think. But that was not the purpose of the rifle, it really shone as a quick-shot thing - exactly what you need when reacting to an ambush.
@cbwelch46 жыл бұрын
I would enjoy shooting either and I own a PTR and an M1A. The PTR takes reliability and ruggedness, but the M1A is balanced better (not front heavy) and absolutely will outshoot the G3 types. Far better iron sights and trigger. Not even close. However, if I had to run out of my house into the wilderness and take only one rifle, it would be the G3 or the AKM.

+Axel K My first G3(AG3) was a 1971, that had served in the army since it was built. I used this one in 1997, and it never failed me. The only reason I parted with it was because the army gunsmith needed to "reblue" it and install new sights.. They were quite banged up after someone, a Panserskalle(The norwegian answer to "die first" panzer grenadiers) drove over it with his jeep during a shortcut through our field camp, wich also destroyed a few tents... The one I have now is a 1973 that I have put around 10.000 rounds through since 1999 and on a good day (I'm not a great shot) still can give me amazing groupings and have yet to jam on me. The Home Guard Armorsmith is also trying to take that one back, since after near 20 years in my hands and countless field exercises, its outside is getting banged up.

Hi, interesting to see all the different views of the guns. I have used the swedish K, G3 (Ak4 in Sweden) and FN FNC (Ak5 in Sweden) in my military service, but I have fired a lot of other guns from the 19-century and onwards. My absolute favorite is the G3 for the following reasons: The 7,62*51 has a punch that 5,56*45 doesn't. Especially on long ranges. I prefer 7,62 any day of the week. Look at the penetration in different materials and you will also be convinced. The 7,62*51 Nato is the same ammunition as we use in the FN MAG (KSP58 in Sweden) (and the sniper rifle). We can share and use the ammunition were best suited for the moment. The current version of G3 we use have a red dot scope and an adjustable stock, which makes it "modern", flexible and accurate. You can also add a sniper scope and the G3 will fire the 7,62-punch up to 800 m (½ mile) with great accuracy. A 40 mm grenade launcher can also be added to any G3. You can fire smoke grenades 2-300 m (220-330 yards) to cover a retreat or circumvention. It is easy to maintain. It doesn't take much practice to clean the G3 in the dark in a couple of minutes. It is rubust, yet easy to handle at the same time. You can easily reload with a very low profile and without moving your trigger finger. It has never malfunctioned for me when shooting without the cartrigde collection pouch mounted. What is not good with the G3: It is a bit heavy (especially with the 40 mm) and a bit long. It is not a gun for people with very short arms, even if the adjusable stock helps a bit. The standard magazine only holds 20 rounds and the 7,62 is heavier the the 5,56. On the other hand you do not waste ammo in the same way as you might do with the 5,56. I tend to conserve ammo with only 20 rounds in the magazine. It gets a bit dirty when firing a lot of rounds (especially the "blank" wooden ones), but it is easy to maintain. It has never been an issue for me. You can only fire 60 fast rounds before it gets to hot. If you fire 60 shots on automatic, it might get so hot that the next round will go off by itself. It has never happened to me even after 100 rounds fast fire, but there is a risk.

Honestly, Wehrmacht? Heckler & Koch was founded after the war (from Mauser...), and the G3 was developed in the 1950s... I was serving in the Bundeswehr during the transition period (1999/2000) from HK G3 and Walther P1 (P38) to the next generation HK G36 and HK P8 as standard weapons. So I got a good comparison...

Ah, I understand. No. Wehrmacht was the term for the armed forces just an specificaly during the period of the Nazi governement from 1936 and was finally officially disolved in early 1946. at the time the M1 was a great rifle when they first adopted them, however, the design in general was not the most efficient. the SVT40 was a great example of what I would consider a superior rifle, though many, especially people that like screaming "'merica!" dont really agree, 10 rounds, can be reloaded in the middle of a magazine easily instead of having to pull everything out awkwardly, along with being a full 2 pounds lighter. the M14 on the other hand, is an outdated design that was adopted mostly because of the military more worried about having their guns domestically produced than having the most reliable or effective gun. the US decided on trying to get a design from the 1890s/1900s to work while we have the G3, which is the perfection of German WWII small arms design, so an idea from the mid 1940s, and the FAL, which was built as a new system from the ground up when it was first introduced originally for the .270 British round, which is early Cold War small arms design (mid 1950s). Sure, the M14 shoots great, but guess what? The G3 and the FAL can shoot just as well, if not better, yet are more advanced designs and tend to be more reliable in adverse conditions as well... There is a reason why the Germans were so much more interested in the SVT40 than the M1 in WWII.

Nice. I know very little about guns, and so the H&K G3 (with a greenish plastic stock) is the only one I have actually fired. Privately owned firearms are rare in Germany, but during my time in the military (1990/91) this was the standard rifle for most personnel (besides the Uzi, which was issued to drivers, and the Walther P38 for officers). The original German meaning of the safety positions are: S: Sicher (safe) E: Einzelfeuer (single shot) F: Feuerstoß (burst) As a joke we used to refer to "F" as "Frieden" (peace): after firing a long burst, there would be peaceful silence.

I used a G3 in the Portuguese Army, made in Portugal under license, and I loved every part of it. It was extremely accurate in the range. A bit heavy and long, but an elegant, imposing rifle. We used both the FAL and the G3. In the beginning of the uprisings in Angola in 1961 the Portuguese Army was still equipped with the Kar 98 Mauser. Try to counter an ambush in a trail with a bolt action rifle! Germany was kind enough to lend us a good number of FN FAL rifles, but when time came to manufacture a battle rifle under license it seems that FN was unwilling while HK was happy to oblige. And so we made and sell thousands of them and kept them in service until now. They are currently being slowly replaced in the Army by the FN SCAR in both calibers, but still the Air Force and Navy retain the G3. Everybody likes it. Very fine video, unassuming and not excessively Gung Ho.

+Random Pickle That has been fixed. There's a range of serial numbers of early PTR rifles where the flutes in the chamber are "out of spec" Their current ones however are in spec and will eat anything you feed it, including DAG MEN and South African. However, be warn, PTR means Precision Target Rifles. They are *not* precision target rifles. I know because I have a PTR with a fucked up barrel crown. PTR refused to replace the barrel even though it's a manufacture defect. They said 4 inches at a 100 yards was acceptable and didn't meet warranty service requirements. If you want a precision .308 semi automatic rifle I would suggest looking at the Springfield M1A loaded or match. If you want a G3 clone to play around with, get the PTR GI and replace the furniture to make it look like a H&K G3. I'm not hating on PTR, but I felt since I paid $1100 for a "Precision Target Rifle" with a bull target barrel it should at least do 1 MOA and be held to that standard.
@120masterpiece8 жыл бұрын
***** Yes. I can't say 100% where the issue was as far as the round goes, but because the flutes of the chamber for the older PTRs were out of spec and cut too shallow it wouldn't cycle the rifle. This is common with some Berdan primed ammunition, like the German DAG MEN stuff or the South African .308. This has been fixed with their current PTRs because I've researched and I was able to fire South African stuff with no issue. And in all honesty you probably wouldn't be shooting DAG MEN or South African stuff. That Israeli stuff you speak of is more than likely berdan prime with a green sealant. Be cautious with M1As though. They are prone to slam firing if you use civilian .308 rounds with weak primers. I do actually have both a PTR and a M1A.

***** A lot of factors goes into how accurate an M1A is but generally it's around 3 - 4 inches at 100 yards with iron sights on a good day.

I think that 3 -4 inch groups at 500 meters, on an average day with iron sights is where you would be, with the M1A1. With practice (lots!) center mass at 900 meters, first shot can be expected, with a Leatherwood M1 scope its a given.

I am from the UK and used the FN. FAL. ie. SLR in action in Aden 1965. Yea I'm an old guy, but when the sh1t hits the fan it will pump out the rounds magazine after magazine. On testing on open ground in seriously high temperatures it proves to be very accurate firing on semi auto with iron sights. Great gun, served me well in my time of serious need.

+H&Ks until the end of days! That is until you get to day two, and the bugger gets heavy, and then it only gets heavier. Have you tried marching a whole day with the G3 together with a full pack? I have, and I learned to value light guns for military use.

H&Ks until the end of days! I havnet the foggiest, only that the G3 is a real bastard to trek around. As that was what the Army issued me with, the C8 on the other hand was a pure joy in comperison. As the G3 is the heaviest of the real rifles(leaving the m14 out here), it makes it the most brutish. I should add that I did not carry a G3 into combat in my military career. Truth be told, according to portugese vets, the AR10 was better than the G3 in combat, and again all down to handling. But the round(.308) was flawed, as you didnt get that many chances to outrange an AK47, but the other guy had 1/3 more ammo than you when the contact stayed hot.

Ken Parnell I carried the Australian made version as a conscript rifleman in Vietnam 1969. I was always confident that it would never let me down but Australian infantry had a reputation second to non for weapon maintenance, we even kept worn out GPMG 60's reliable. I cannot understand why today we send infantrymen out with 5.56mm rifles although the Australian Made Steyr and the Aussie developed ammunition is superior to any other 5.56mm service round. Duty First.
@kenparnell42977 жыл бұрын
Oh, I'm there with you, especially in light of the fact that you can adjust the recoil of the 7.62 x 51 round on the FN. And the new FN's are even better at it and fire a three round burst on target, unlike the old M-14, which was nothing more than the M-1 with the changes made based on veterans who used the M-1. I heard it said that the M-14 is the rifle the WWII soldier wanted to have. I'm not a fan of the 5.56 either and here in the US we have the "green" round made without lead.
@kenparnell42977 жыл бұрын
The one thing I never have understood with the 5.56 is they told our guys that it's lighter and they can carry twice as many rounds than they could with the 7.62. But then said to always use three rounds on a target, meaning an enemy soldier. Which made me wonder if you carried twice as many but it took you three times the number of rounds to make the same kill, seemed to me you were in the hold so to speak from the beginning. But that was the way I saw it.

I'd take the FAL over the G3 unless I was a sniper or a designated marksman. The G3 definitely has the edge in overall accuracy. As for the M14, if you want to make it easier to control just put the same muzzle break on it that you have on the SCAR-17S, a.k.a. the Primary Weapon Systems FSC-30.

the G3 runs dirty,ugly and designed FOR brutal dirty conditions .but unlike the equally utilitarian Kalashnikov, it is capable of sniper grade accuracy AND is a system tailorable modular design ranging from telescoping stock airborne to reliable SAW belt fed/quick change barrel versions, bonuses that were not mirrored(unfortunately) by any eugine stoner competitor in 7.62 nato. the much nicer FAL was designed for comfortable shooting, possessing little of the G3's industrialized efficiency. Canadian (Canadian Arsenals)adaptions to SAW versions were an unreliable joke,exposing the design limitations of the FN FAL. the AR10 Armalite was designed to be as light(7.5 lbs) and user friendly as possible though like the FAL is not conducive to GALIL like folding stock options, has a reputation for sniper grade accuracy potential(Portugese troops) but notorious for fragility. the M14,though based on the tough venerable 30-06 M1 Garand is way out of it's league in the modern era of high speed manufacturing (like the FAL),based as it is on old expensive manufacturing techniques of stressed expensively milled receivers and only becomes relevant as a sniper rifle when heavily invested in mods for that purpose. please note that i base these appraisals on a national defense economies of scale-not from the viewpoint of collectors or private entities . i welcome criticism of these evaluations.

My PTR91 has both the paddle mag release and button release. I just picked it up not long ago but I love it! Very well made and solid rifle. It's accurate and has low recoil. At 10 pounds it is a bit on the heavy side but at 5 foot 11 and 165 pounds I'm able to handle it no problem. I highly recommend the PTR91 to anyone looking for a really nice battle rifle or DMR.

Having had 3 of the 5 (early M1A with all GI parts and GI NM barrel, TRW forged op rod, standard FAL "Match Grade" 50.00, HK-91), I would give the pride of place to the FN. It is far easier to maintain in the field, mine lived up to it's roll-marked moniker and proved more accurate than either of the others, straight-line action and stock configuration plus a internally baffled rubber-plasticized butt pad made it very comfortable to shoot. Number of parts in the trigger group is small and can be disassembled and reassembled without tools. Easy to clean. Ninety countries couldn't be wrong!

The G3 has one problem: the tube which houses the cocking lever. It tends to get jammed with sand and you can’t disassemble it. After a few days in a sandy environment in basic training the cocking lever was blocked. When it is in good condition it shoots very precisely.
