Some guns just get way too much attention. In this list, we highlight 5 firearms that get unfairly placed on a pedestal for a multitude of reasons that we lay out for you to consider. You may disagree, and that's just fine. Also the list is about overrated guns, not necessarily bad ones.

I was right there with you, thinking "mine is crazy accurate!" But then I forgot about the grueling time spend figuring out what ammo it likes and polishing the trigger and bolt groups. That being said, after finding preferred ammo to a gun that wasnt neglected via corrosive steel cartridge ammo, and an hr polishing and working the trigger to1.6lb pull, it's the first gun I grab regardless of what I'm shooting for... currently holds 4.5" 3shot groups at 900yrds.

Here... I'll drop a little present for anyone who loves their mosin. I've tried this in multiple mosin nagants across the country, and get the same results with each... some being better than others due to bull barrels and trigger groups... Hand load... .311 dia 174gr Sierra match king hpbt, 43.5 grain varget powder, cci 250 mag primers, chanfer and de-bur the primer pockets and neck, and seat the projectile where its .002 jammed.... biggest group I've seen from this was 1"@100yrds with probably the most abused mosin ever. Its throat and chamber was so worn some of the shelf ammo cases would split on the shoulder.... aside from that one, groups ranged from 3/4" 1/8"....... oh, and this is for barrels that have been cut down to 22"-24" from the throat. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Garbage Rod is a good & cheap surplus rifle, shit I even own one. Definitely not a fan boy of it however. I prefer my Mauser Kar98k ten times over my Mosin, hands down. Bolts easier to manipulate, easier to quickly reload, and in my opinion; far better ammo type than the Mosins 7.62x54R, and not to mention the Kar98k is ridiculously more accurate.

I am a U.S. Navy Vietnam combat vet. in 1971, the year when my missions took place, the Navy still had the M1A1 in issue. Fortunately, due to the nature of my missions, I was able to choose my weapons. Of course, for a sidearm I carried the M1911. I chose the M1A1 Thompson for my long weapon. One of my main reasons was that it used the same 45ACP as my sidearm which made ammo carry more efficient. It didn't disappoint. For combat in the jungle, where you couldn't see an enemy more than 30 yards away at most, it was ideal. You heard them, and bug sprayed the area where the noise came from, heard the scream, saw the movement, and finished with another burst. I saw M16s jam and men die trying to get the damned thing to work. I never had a problem. To this day I won't carry any of the AR type weapons, they evoke too many bad memories. Is the M1A1 a wonder weapon? Hell no. It is what it is, a very effective weapon for short to medium range combat. It got me through my missions and I came back alive. "Nuff said.

@willl 77 Your statement seems born of ignorance. The AR is superior in what way? Accuracy at longer distances? Yes. Reliability these days? Maybe. Ability to use the same ammunition as your side arm? Nope, no way. You obviously have a prejudice for the AR type of gun. Perhaps this is because that is what YOU used in the military. I carried an 03 A3 Springfield in boot camp. I still have a soft spot for that weapon, but in combat I would MUCH prefer the M1A1, as would most WW2 veterans, as is witnessed by the fact that they grabbed them as quickly as they could in the Pacific when the original non-com to whom they were issued fell. For jungle fighting they are an excellent weapon. Each weapon has its own strengths and weaknesses. Grow up and learn that.

Fun fact: The M3 “Grease Gun” was designed just because of the said weight gripes surrounding the Thompson. It’s a decent enough Submachine-gun, and a competitor well up to the point it needed to be. But, it’s failings prompted it’s designed replacements, along with costs closer to 200 dollars in its initial design. I imagine the M1 variant cut corners considerably to save on money, but I don’t think it can beat 15$ circa 1942. The M3 machine gun of course has its own problems, what with its folding stock being made of wire metal. It also has fixed sights (100 yards) so adjusting for closer or further is a bit of a guessing game. (Although effective range is about that, so not much point in trying to lob .45 acp.) However, it makes up for this fact 8.15 lbs at heaviest when empty, with improvements by its A1 variant making it into the 7.95 lbs range. 2 ish pounds may not mean much to folks, but when you’re hoofing it for a while it adds up. Along with being exceedingly simplistic and easy to replace by their standards. It’s still seeing service today in the middle east. And by western powers as late as Kosovo. So while the Thompson has her place, I’m surprised more people don’t geek out about her successor. I will give the Thompson one thing tho, she has style. I think the Thompson has its place and is fun and fantastic in its own way. But, it has drawbacks and we should be realistic about em. The German rifle: Ho boy, even German infantry bitched about it. Mind you, they had a lot more to bitch about, considering their smoothest to operate rifle that wasn’t cutting edge and reserved for a select few units (Stg-44 cough) being the Kar-98 bolt action and you have good reason to grumble. That gun is NOT superior to the Garand. And I will die on that hill, or not, considering I could hold the mountain with a Garand like my Great Grandad in North Africa and Italy. It may only fire 8 rounds, but it also is easy to operate, care for, and has decent heat treating and parts. The Garand is a mean battle rifle. And while a little heavy, for your average rifleman it had good range and accuracy. It also just feels really good in your hands. So yea the G-43 is quite honestly not all she’s cracked up to be. No issue with the Armalight criticism. And the Soviet gun. I like it for its historical value. That’s it. It’s not a superior weapon, it’s not even all that well made. It shoots, can load, and in a pinch kill Nazis. If you put a scope on it you can maybe improve the accuracy a bit, but there was always a deviation error that most snipers whom modified it had to deal with. For a gun to crap out in mass quantities, however, it fits the bill perfectly. It’s disposable, a stop gap, and easy to make in large quantities. Why else do you think they produced so few of the gun that was SUPPOSED to replace it? The SVT-41 I would argue would have been better if not for its own design flaws and issues with upkeep in wartime conditions. It did well in its role with specialty units, but its difficulty in production made it a liability. Just generally Russian Rifles for those years are less impressive than their Sub-Machinegun counterparts with the PPSH-41 to 43 being excellent weapons by comparison. Although with diminished range, so the Mosin has that going for it; I still find it awkward as a weapons system. Additionally, I’m not sure if I just found a mega small one, or what, but the stock sucks. Of the ones I’ve held, it feels awkward on my shoulder. Would make for part of the Accuracy problem I believe.

Funny thing about the Thompson, my dad did two tours in Korea with the 25th, and he was issued a Thompson, and he was not a fan. Another soldier was drooling over it, and my dad offered to trade arms which the other guy gladly did, so my das became a BAR man throughout his two tours. He loved the BAR even though he said it was pretty tired from already serving in WWII. He said the best way to keep the action moving well in the cold winters was to squirt lighter fluid and set it on fire. That warmed everything up and it fired fine. He even got recommended for a medal because the CO said he was firing so much it caught on fire. Still- I think Thompson's are gorgeous.

Heres the thing about the mosin, it's a heavy enough rifle that it is made useful in close combat. I have a mosin, and I agree with you that it's not a good long range rifle, and it does have a very cheap and rugged design. I mean, what do you expect from the ussr in 1941. I have noticed, based on personal experience, that it makes a decent close or medium range rifle, especially when you have a bayonet attached. I've killed several coyotes using it, and have missed about a quarter of my shots on average, so there is evidence that it's not too accurate. But when I charge down a coyote, and transfix him with my bayonet, it does the job. And I believe that's what the soviets intended when they reengineered the rifle in 1931. They wanted it to get the job done, not to be better than all other rifles. So, yes, I agree. The Mosin Nagant is an overrated rifle, but shouldn't be spat on either. You said yourself, see it for what it is. (ie.) A really crappy sniper rifle but will do the job at 200 yards or less

My father carried a Thompson during WW2. He preferred it over the M3 grease gun which was lighter but as he put it more delicate He also said the weight was reassuring and useful when it needed to be used to push back civilians or control prisoners. In close combat such as clearing buildings accuracy wasn't important but easy maneuvering and stopping power were. For suppression fire it was more than accurate enough and accurate fire could be supplied by the M1 Garands. In fact he was a great proponent of sending large volumes of lead down range. As for the 45cal round it had good stopping power out to 150yrds and most combat was at less than 100yrds and could punch through thick underbrush. Both his side arm and main weapon used the same round. He personally preferred it to the M1 carbine because it had a higher rate of fire and bigger mag and as noted his ammo was interchangeable. To sum it up by your standards it wasn't any good too heavy didn't have a nice site or finish okay. But my father chose to carry that weapon because it was the best gun available that would keep him and his men alive. No insult but I think I'll side with my dad

I would point out, the reason so many people talk greatly about the AR-18/180 has to do with the huge number of rifles based on it (Examples include the Daewoo K2, Howa Type 89, H&K G36, Royal Ordinance SA80, HS Produkt VHS/VHS-2, and CZ 805 BREN). People think that "Oh, all these guns are based on it, so it must have been great!" when, in reality, it's more that those rifles took the best elements and dumped a LOT of the AR-18s issues in the process. It had plenty of good elements, but its concept as a cheaper alternative to the AR-15 meant that it could never really be fully realized in the hands of the original designers. Thankfully, everyone else picked it up and went "hey, there's something good in here." A flattered rifle imitated by many but copied by none, and for plenty of good reasons. That being said, the Brownells BR-180 is cool as hell, I just wish the AR-15 style trigger group weren't so prone to getting jammed up by dust. Darned tight tolerances in a part that's supposed to have tight tolerances 😅

I feel like this guy is just being really petty tbh. From what I've heard at least with the Tavor 7 in 308, it has an adjustable gas block. No clue how you'd manage to "accidentally" knock the mag out when your hand will be tightly gripped onto the grip, with your arm moving on the side of the gun, but okay. He said it's too heavy in the back; don't have the gun yet so I can't confirm or deny, but it's much better to be in the back than the front. Idk why he said it's not ergonomic, when it's literally ambidextrous. Mushy trigger, yet its better than most bullpups and theres also trigger upgrades for the gun.. As you said though, the X95 is def a big upgrade from the Tavor 7, also giving more rail space. I really hope there'll be a conversion to chamber it in 308.

I have both a Mosin Nagant 91/30 and an M1 Garand. I purchased the 91/30 and inherited the M1. Both have their uses. You have to take into account that not everyone has the cash for a $1000 bolt gun. Some of us don't have the cash for a $500 bolt gun. That taken into consideration, a $110 Mosin Nagant (mo-SEEN nah-GAHN) _is_ an -excellent- decent rifle in some respects, definitely not in others: FOR THE PRICE: 1. is it fun to shoot? Yep, but it kicks harder than a .30-06 bolt gun. I have a bolt-action 12ga shotgun that has less 'felt recoil'. The steel buttplate does it no favors. The short length of pull will put some people off. 2. is it cheap to shoot? It _can_ be if you're shooting corrosive milsurp ammo. If you're shooting quality ammo the price goes up. And quality ammo can be hard to find locally. 3. is it accurate? Not really, but _acceptable_ accuracy truly depends on what you need the gun to do: Are you punching holes in paper at 100 yards on the cheap? This is the _perfect_ rifle. If your goal is to piss off everyone around you with muzzle blast, get the carbine. Are trying to put lead on a gong at 1000 yards? This is the wrong gun. You'll spend more on ammo trying to accomplish this than you would on a much better rifle. Are you looking for a cheap deer rifle? At the price it was when I bought mine, $119 it definitely fit the bill. You can definitely make a kill-zone shot out to a few hundred yards if you have practiced with the rifle (like you should with _any_ hunting firearm). But at today's $325? Umm... No. For another hundred hundred bucks you can get an inexpensive used near-MOA bolt gun. Oh no - don't tell me you won't get one if you can't get it new. If you're willing to pony up for a 91/30 you're already willing to buy a used gun. 4. But really, is it _accurate?_ OK, you keep pressing this. By 1890's standards and manufacture, the were _impressively_ accurate. Even by WWII they were acceptable, especially for the piss-poor production standards that prevalent from mid-war onward. Even today you can find a (very) few that are probably under 2.5 MOA given high-end ammo or the painstaking task of tuning a hand load, but good luck getting the stores to let you paw through their stock of 91/30s to find that gun. There is at least one video out there of people demonstrating the difference in accuracy of a 'garbage rod' shooting eastern bloc mil-surp ammo and genuine 7N1 ammo. With the 7N1 (IIRC) the guy hit a target at 730 or so yards on the third shot. Bear in mind that AFAIK 7N1 is no longer available. That said, a great many are so shot out that you'd have a better chance of hitting your target _if you threw the rifle at it._ This is the norm, not the exception. But given the choice between which gun to take hunting, the Mosin or the Garand, I usually take the Mosin. The M1 is in excellent condition and shoots about 2 MOA. I don't like to risk damaging it, and M1 specific hunting loads aren't common. Just grabbing any old .30-06 hunting ammo off the shelf runs the very real risk of bending or breaking the op-rod with too hot of a powder. Similarly, the M1 chamber is designed for a spitzer-style bullet, specifically in the 147-155 grain size (depending on construction, though I've heard that 170 is the upper limit as well). Firing round-nose ammo isn't good for the gun - my understanding is that the bullet is jammed into the throat and runs the risk of chamber overpressure. I could be completely wrong about why it's bad, but it's bad nonetheless. The last thing I have to say about the Mosin is this: Even though they have a poor reputation, I've never heard anyone badmouth it on anything _other than_ accuracy, trigger feel, or bolt feel. Yes. that covers a _lot_ of the gun, but I've never heard: "It's not safe to shoot that, even with original loads" (I'm looking at you 1916 Spanish Mauser chambered in 7.62 NATO, marked .308 Win) "You shouldn't shoot it - some weren't heat treated properly" (early Mausers, a few 1903's, some modern firearms) "be careful, it's not a stronger three-lug action" (many rifles this old, including Mausers up to 1898) "It's just not durable" (said no one ever of the MN 91/30)

The Thompson was a status symbol during WW2. They were crazy expensive for the government to buy, so not a lot were issued to troops. Most soldiers went into combat with bolt-action or semi-automatic rifles. Machine pistols came later (i.e. the M3 Grease Gun), making the Thompson the "best" gun for firing a lot of lead at the enemy while still being mobile. The alternative was lugging around a machine gun or a BAR, which was more like a LMG and much bigger and heavier than any rifle, which were also quite big and heavy. So if you had a Thompson as an American soldier during WW2, you weren't going to part with it readily. Some were literally handed down in the unit when the owner was killed or taken out of action. And in the often close confines of the battlefields of the Pacific 1941-1945, being able to hose down entire bunkers filled with Japanese soldiers was something every Marine and GI wanted.

The Thompson was a WW1 design still in use in WWII. They cost about $200 back then or adjusted for inflation $3,751 each. This was a lot of money to equip a foot soldier and by later in the war they cost $50 each or $892 adjusted for inflation. This reduction was obtained by both volume of production and design changes for less expense. The late war Thompsons were of less finish quality than earlier yet functioned just as well. The advantage of the Thompson was it's 45ACP cartridge which was powerful and already in production and military stockpiles. The Thompson was replaced by the lighter M3 'grease gun' also chambered in .45ACP not to reduce weight but to cost less. Development and production delays prevented the complete replacement of the Thompson and there were three Thompsons for every one M3 in service. The Thompson was a weapon of it's time and functioned well and served it's role well. You could carry a lighter Sten gun, which the M3 was inspired by, with it's lighter 9mm cartridge. Both the Sten and Thompson were close range volume of fire weapons the major difference was the hammer like blow from the .45ACP round. If I were in close range of an enemy I would want the .45ACP round. Better to carry some weight and be alive than less tired and dead.

The Thompson does have a pleasing look but I’ve always found them heavy and awkward feeling. I like having a handgun and carbine that share the same cartridge but the Marlin Camp Carbine in 45 ACP is a much more comfortable option to carry and fire. It’s a shame they’re so hard to find.

Ruger now owns Marlin. Hopefully they bring them back. A carbine takedown in 357 and 44 magnum sounds good also
