Except .30 Super Carry was ready to go when it was announced. You don't just spin up a product like this from nothing and have it ready to go. Federal would have started work on .30SC when ammo availability was not a problem, and was already getting production tooling ready to go when the supply crunch hit. Similarly, that's a lot of sunk capital to just walk away from. This is not the result of them not reading the room: This is the result of them being suddenly hit with drastically different market conditions and having to run with it because it's what they have ready to go. As they say, you go to war with the army you have, not the army you need.

At the same time, most people don't really understand the logistics involved in production, because they don't need to. I'm not saying "don't be a meanie." The cartridge with the best marketing does the best, look at all the slow-poke rifle rounds that cant keep up with the abilities and velocities of 100 year old designs that are selling like hot cakes to people who will never use them to their potential other than a talking point. "I have a 6.5xyz, and a .300 subsonic-ultra-slow they are truly superior to any other cartridge, they are sooo efficient! Your .270 oldentimer is an obsolete relic that cant compete!" Buy what you want, but dont try and convince me its the best thing going, im not as easy to deceive as you... Until they put out a reliable shoulder fired rail gun, with laser flat trajectories, i won't be impressed, current available tech is still a case, powder and projectile affair, under 5000 fps. The handgun market right now is "stack and a half" self defense pistols, and one of the major selling points is round capacity. After Sig released the 365, everybody had to produce their own 365 clones, and many touted their versions having a 1rd higher magazine capacity than Sig. It's no different than horsepower wars between the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro. If the 30sc is adding 2 rounds to my current 9mm Shield+, and the 30sc hst round has more energy than my current 9mm 147gr hst round, then what is the problem? Federal hst rounds are good to go, so the hst 30sc round won't be any different. People bought a Hellcat because it had 1 more round than the 365, so people are gonna buy this for sure.
@magicgeek1237

Hellcat was also competitively priced. I’m a big capacity fan in as small a size I can get but price is definitely gonna be the make or break. A hellcat size in 30sc will definitely kick off if they get the ammo available and priced well

@@NomadicHacker. Wrong way to think about it. It's not for people who already had a 357, it's for the people who wanted a revolver of a particular size without giving up so much in terms of ballistics. The problem is, you could get 5-shot 357 revolvers of that size so... big whoop. This is more for people who want a .380, but now have close to 9mm ballistics and added capacity. If the caliber does what it promises, it blows .380 out of the water except in the micro guns.

This cartridge at least appears to do more than either of those. The 45GAP was just shorter, literally no advantage over 45ACP. Except it's the opposite, while those we rejected because "they had pretty much the same performance as narrower cartridges, it's not worth the smaller capacity or bigger gun" this time the script is flipped, now it's 9x19mm that has pretty much the same capability but because it's wider it's either a lower capacity or a bigger gun. And we know from the incredible successes of single-stack .380 pistols that there is a huge demand for very VERY small pistols. We know from the failure of guns that just shoot more lead at the cost of capacity are not favoured as "well I'd rather have a slightly lower recoiling round for a bit higher capacity". This is RESPONDING to trends, not defying them. it's not a trend that "9mm has won before so it will always win no matter what". Some people will pay any price to have "the best" they want a gun as small as a Ruger .380 but with the capacity and power of a Glock 19.

Two things to note about .30 SC: One, the diameter of the cartridge may be small enough to make a double stack, two position feed magazine feasible. Not having to taper down to single feed will add even more capacity without additional length. Second, the smaller bore would make for a quieter suppressed gun. The 120 gr. load is already practically subsonic. If .30 SC ammo is similar in price to 9 as Federal promises, it would make a great round for a suppressed pistol or PCC

A 120 gr. subsonic load however, which has almost exactly the same sectional density as 147 gr. 9mm, would be super fun to shoot in a PCC and could use the .300 BLK suppressors that a lot of folks already have. Thankfully it's already very unlikely you will need to use your carry pistol. In that unlikely event, it's most likely you'll fire 3-5 rounds. So, are there situations that will occur you can't solve 6 rounds but can with 8? Yes, but very unlikely. Can't solve with 8 but can with 10? Even more unlikely. As the saying goes, you can't miss fast enough. If 10-12 rounds won't cut it, but 12-14 will, you're either a lousy shot or you're in such an unlikely scenario that no one could prepare for it. @blackbird_actual

@@zm1786 Capacity isn't the be all, end all of a carry round. The main issue with something like .40 is that in compact carry guns, the capacity lost and increased recoil vs 9mm isn't made up for by .40s marginally improved terminal ballistics. In the case of .30 super carry, you do get a couple more rounds in the magazine, but when the new microcompacts can hold up to 13-15rds of 9mm, it's not much of an improvement - most self defense shootings are over after 3-5 rounds fired. Now, not many people are going to carry a gun which only holds 5 rounds these days, but this desire for ever higher round counts at the expense of terminal performance really doesn't line up with reality. Bullet diameter and subsequent ability to expand is simply not something that can be written off completely. The reason 9x19 has had such staying power is because it offers a good balance of capacity, penetration, expansion, and recoil characteristics. The .30 super carry just doesn't offer enough of an improvement in that balance of variables mentioned to warrant a huge amount of interest. Now, if it could be used in handguns the size of the LCP, it would most definitely be a significant improvement, but it doesn't appear likely that those very small deep carry guns will, at least in the present, be able to handle the increased pressure of the .30 super carry. If Federal continues to try and make it a 9mm killer, it will be a failure.

I think I commented on one of your videos that this feels like a re-invention of the 5.7x28. The pressure is high enough that it might not work in an LCP-sized pistol. Even if it is mechanically possible, the recoil would be a problem with so little real estate on the gun to get a grip. In a duty-sized gun, one can get a bunch of cartridges, but I'm not sure how often that is needed. The ammunition is around twice the cost of 9mm, so practice becomes very expensive for people who aren't being supplied by the ammunition companies. I'm more curious how the caliber would work in a pistol caliber carbine. If a sixteen-inch barrel gives a corresponding velocity increase while the bullet remains stable, maybe this could be a fun caliber for having a pistol and rifle in the same caliber. Maybe an AR-pistol in this caliber could be fun. Even then, the caliber seems to be heading for niche status.

I feel like .30 SC will blow up if introduced in some PCC, like imagine an H&K MP5SK or MP7 type gun without the huge banana in the magazine. Or even an AR-15 like setup, with a 10-12" barrel, but with mags like the Kriss Vector but +10?!!

My question is why is this being marketed to new gun owners? I would feel way more comfortable putting something in their hands that is tried and true, that has years of use by millions of people. I stand by my sentiment that is an answer looking for a question. Also, a lot of gun owners have spent the past few years consolidating to 9mm and now people are expected to abandon all that and start over.
@Predalien195
@Predalien195 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think 9mm users are expected to abandoned it. If you're a new gun buyer you have nothing to start with, so the clay is fresh to mold as one sees fit. As for people who already own guns, I can't speak on your behalf but I know plenty of people who get tired of the same old stuff and just want something "different". This is a potential answer for those people. But from a serious standpoint, if you could have a S&W Shield Plus with 15 instead of 13 or EZ in 9mm with 10 rounds instead of 8 without increasing the length of the magazine, I think most people would be on board with that. Kind of like Shield Arms and their Glock 43X/48 magazines. Only now... the potential for even higher capacity exists. So people would welcome extra rounds. Sure, there's all the naysayers with the "You don't need those extra rounds!" or some variation of that saying. Firstly I'd say get fucked but secondly I never met so many people who were against higher capacities until this cartridge came along. They never made those arguments when people talked about restricting capacities.... Regardless, for me as somebody who already owns a lot of .32 caliber firearms, from a reloading perspective this makes a lot of sense to me as it uses the same projectiles my .32 H&R Magnums and .327 Federal Magnums do. From a defensive standpoint it offers power right in line with hot .32 H&R Magnum or very mild .327 Federal Magnum and of course much higher capacities over my revolvers. It won't replace them, but it will supplement them. End of the day, to each their own.

Frankly, I like the idea of .30 SC. I just don't expect it to last very long. This might linger in countries that ban civilians from owning guns and ammunition in military chamberings and calibers. If they lightened the projectile even more and got the velocity as high or higher than 7.62mm Tokarev, this could be a very cool round and might stick around for some time.

Consider this. 90% of SD shootings require from 1 to 3 rounds. Is adding 2 to a 8 round mag worth buying a new gun? Then needing to buy a uncommon and likely expensive ammo. I wish them luck, but this will flop hard. 9MM has been around for 100 years. It's not going anywhere.

I've been saying for years capacity past 10 in a carry pistol is significantly diminishing returns. I'll take it if it's available, but not if I have to make a tradeoff for it. Now, significantly increased capacity in duty sidearms? Who wouldn't want 20 rounds in a flush magazine on a duty sidearm?

@Sqwee theoretically, if they were both manufactured at the same scale, 30SC would be cheaper since it uses less raw material, would have the same terminal ballistics, and would allow more rounds in a given volume or same round in less weight. However, given how entrenched 9mm is in both the military and civilian world, that's very unlikely to happen. This will likely end up like 38 Super: a very good and capable round that garners a small and devoted following in sport shooting, but is held back in wide adoption due to fiscal limitations.

Why are we focused on creating new rounds this year and not just strengthening the supply chains and having ammo ready and affordable to as many people as possible.
@Lowlightt
@Lowlightt 2 жыл бұрын
Because the only to increase the number of rounds is to increase the number of machines making rounds which financially doesn't pan out for the companies making the rounds as most people have speculated that the round shortage will roll over in 1-2 years. While the machines could take up to 10 years to actually pay off and thats if there is still the demand during those 10 years for the rounds. Its not a sound investment for them to expand 9mm productions at the moment.
@obviousgreyman
@obviousgreyman 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lowlightt so it’s a sound investment to create an entirely new round that has zero demand but it’s not to make more 9mm which is basically all anyone is asking for as far as carry ammo goes? That makes zero sense they’re already investing in new machining for the new round why not make more of what people already want instead. There’s a time for innovation but maybe it’s not right in the middle of a shortage.
@Lowlightt
@Lowlightt 2 жыл бұрын
@@obviousgreyman Yes it is actually. A machine makes "X" number of rounds. Currently there is demand for 9mm. However eventually that demand will dry up as the market stabilizes. They can add another 9mm machine and meet the current demand but 4 years from now that extra machine won't be needed to meet the normal demand that the market stabilizes to. That means that extra machine will now set not being utilized. And since it would take like 10 years to pay off you would be losing money on the machine in the long run aka why ammo manufacturers aren't tooling up additional 9mm machines. In comparison a new round would have demand even if niche and that newachine can actually continue to run even if the demand for it isn't as high as a 9mm might be in the market. Making it a better investment. A machine that loses money vs once that will make money. It's really that simple. They are looking at there company 5 to 10 years from now. Not the shelves in the ammo store this year.
@obviousgreyman
@obviousgreyman 2 жыл бұрын
@@Lowlightt right so ammo companies don’t give a shit if you can’t afford their ammo or get the rounds you want as long as it’s financially beneficial for them. Backwards thinking in my book I don’t think they’d lose a penny if they supplied more 9mm not to mention the expensive part of the investment is the machining itself meaning they can just retool later if they want to make a new round once things catch up. The machines aren’t exclusive to caliber.

If what people want is more energy they need to carry a 44 magnum, if they want a semi auto firearm carry a 10mm. If you only care about capacity this will be the round.
