Love the range extender, as a Chevy Volt owner having that gas backup fixed all the electric car issues, living in rural America. Love the idea of the Rav4 prime with the gas backup. I have the new 2022 Bronco and this might just be my next upgrade.
@strykerentllc29 күн бұрын
You realize that the gas backup engine never builds enough heat to burn off moisture or fuel that pools into the oil in the crankcase, right? Water boils off at 212 degrees and these hybrid gas/electric powertrains are an owners nightmare when it comes to costs of repairs since the engine oil never gets to 212F. The gasoline winds up in the oil due to the low tension piston rings they incorporate in the design as the engines never reach the temperature required to vaporize the fuel and send it into the intake to be burned via the PCV system.
@DripDripDrip6929 күн бұрын
@@strykerentllc Those problems can be engineered around, Toyota's hybrid engines are all very reliable, and there are hybrid specific oils that can tolerate more moisture.
@strykerentllc29 күн бұрын
@@DripDripDrip69 It's not the oil that's the issue. It's the metals the engine components are manufactured of which aren't exotic corrosion resistant alloys. Toyota's hybrid engines are expensive to maintain as are the batteries to replace. You own one that you can attest to or are you simply defending Toyota for the sake of doing so? Example is the hybrid Camry battery life is 100K miles which can be as short as 4 years for commuters. The cost to maintain the hybrid's ICE is greater than any stand alone ICE powered vehicle, then there's the additional up front cost of the hybrid vehicle. It's not a panacea looking for a problem to cure. It's an answer to a problem that was manufactured by people that live in ivory towers and forced upon the serfs. Hope you do some digging yourself as good information is the best tool any consumer can have when making a vehicle purchase.

This is how you make an EV. Traditional and non-offensive, plus it has the range extender. I think we should model future cars on diesel electric trains. The electric motors propel the vehicle while the diesel engine acts as a generator to power the electric motors. In the case of the Scout its a little different. You charge the battery like a normal EV but if you're out in the bush and you start to run low on charge the ICE engine will fire up to keep you going. I think for heavy duty vehicles such as semi trucks we should go the full train style diesel electric route. That way you don't have to lug around a 5 ton battery just to get 500 miles of range (which is less than half that of conventional diesel trucks). Edison motors has built a working truck with that layout and its great.

The way that Electric only is struggling to make headway in the marketplace, the range extender approach will work well in the North American market-and perhaps elsewhere.
@geejay5653Ай бұрын
I love it. Large electric only vehicles designed to do any semblance of work make no sense at all at this time. Having a generator on board with a smaller battery bank is where the industry should have been pushing all along...better performance, better range, and better for the environment...added bonus is you now own a generator and battery backup system for your home (provided Scout is smart enough to ensure owners can harness all the power the onboard generator creates). This thing is gorgeous.
@Mike-In-O-Town29 күн бұрын
In other words a "Hybrid", which is where Ford, Toyota, and many other OEM's have refocused their attention (i.e. away from pure EV's) based on what their customers are willing to buy.
@geejay565329 күн бұрын
@@Mike-In-O-Town I guess you could call it a hybrid...though it is very different from any current hybrids on the market that I know of. What I'm describing (and what Edison Motors, the Ramcharger, and now Scout are doing) is a completely electric powertrain with no transmission or transfer case connected to the combustion engine. The generator motor can be much smaller and more efficient because it is designed/sized only to charge the batteries and doesn't need to move the vehicle or have a high rev range to work with transmission gearing.

Single piece mega castings for frame? Cell to chassis manufacturing technique? If everything is ran through the touchscreen, that would simplify wiring; no fuses, relays, reduction of microcontroller, and wiring weight itself. The scout should simplistic, and these new manufacturing techniques should help it achieve that. I heard nothing in the actual Scout presentation on manufacturing to make sure that they will reach $60G. I'm not reassured as a plu in hybrid is the most expensive drivetrain and the least efficient as your lugging around 2 powertrains and will suffer weight penalty of them. This will have very little loading capacity. Don't get me wrong. I love the looks but VAG done a poor job executing on the EV side of the powertrain globally

Towing capacity, off road capability, truly made in the US, and it's so good looking! This is going to be a game changer. I do wish there was an all gas version. I'm quite nervous about electric vehicles and LOVE the rumble of gas (in most sizes). I've been underwhelmed with Jeep and Stelantis with everything that's going down over there and the Bronco is underwhelming with towing capacity, price, and size. This could be the solution!

Absolutely beautiful. I cannot wait to get the Traveler. This looks so much better than the Rivian R1S. The Scout Traveler looks like a real off road SUV. Capable of having real off road tires, real ground clearance and the proportions on this thing are flawless unlike the Rivian R1S which has a huge butt and polished chrome everywhere trying to look like a mercedes or something. Totally legit.
