You have the 4.0, so way less issues with head gaskets, slipped liners etc. Recommend you get a cooler thermostat (I think it is the one for a V6 Freelander) and ensure the cooling system is tip-top condition, viscous fan etc. and you should be good. Some trim bits can now be fixed with 3D printed parts - e.g. that instrument surround, the horn button, even the clip that holds the bonnet (hood) prop! Centre Diff lock actuator cable is a definite must-have, as both axles are open diff by default. Traction control (if you don't have 3 Amigos!) works really well off-road, but remember to keep steady throttle, don't back off! :-) Good luck with everything, most issues are well-known and have fixes / improvements. I look forward to seeing what you do with it!

As a former owner of a Disco 2, thought the TD5 variety, I can honestly say she was a great servant to the family. We had no issues with her whatsoever, but thats also due to the TD5, and build quality was pretty solid. She took us to the beach, we took her offroading in the jungles of Malaysia. We owned her for over 5 years, though her time with us ended when she saved us when we went through multiple roll overs on the highway trying to avoid an errant motorcyclist.

@@brandonstewart7145 , it refers to the three warning lights (traction control, ABS, and hill descent control) that pop up when there is a fault within the ABS system. I had one exactly like this one in almost every way with 106k miles. I had to replace the waterpump as it exploded while idling at the ATM, then it started leaking ATF, discovered that the flex plate was warped and the viboration took out the main pump in the transmission, that caused it to fill up the bellhousing with ATF. At the time, you couldn't buy any new parts, so I ordered a new flex plate for $100, then a new transmission from ebay for $500, then it cost $982 to have it installed. Not long after that, it started "knocking" but it was actually the liners that had slipped. I discovered a 220F thermostat was installed, I replaced it with a british 160F diesel T-stat but it was too late. Ended up trading it even for a 2004 Jeep with 280k miles.

I also got to borrow a coworker's Disco 2 with a manual diesel while I was living in England. It was a great drive, but the headlights didn't work. The trip to buy my mini took longer than expected and I had to hardwire one of the headlights on just to get home that night.

Sold my '13 GT stang for a '89 convertible vette with the ZF manual. Clean, 50k miles. Drove it 1600 mi back home. No issues, its honestly a vibe. Going from a 450hp car to a 240hp honestly does not feel different because of how torquey the L98 is and the light body. No regrets. Plus 10K more in my bank account. So, my gf used to have an lx450, and while it was phenomenal off-road,I hated driving it. Aside from being sluggish, which is fine, it was one of the most uncomfortable vehicles I've driven in long term. The trans tunnel is so recessed, it cuts into drivers foot well, and forces the gas pedal over about where the brake should be. So you end up riding with your hips twisted to the left. Seats were also meh, and couldn't adjust far enough back.

Love it. We’ve been travelling around Europe in ours for two years! Only had two breakdowns, both due to coolant hoses. One popped off, and one rubbed on something and pierced a hole. Neither a major issue. We have spent a great deal of money on it though, and maintained it to the highest degree. We rebuilt our engine using an Ashcroft engine block, so no longer any fears with the cylinder liners and head gasket. Also replaced the transmission and transfer case with reconditioned units from Ashcroft. Renewed the ace system with genuine Land Rover parts, renewed all the suspension with OME and genuine Land Rover parts, bla bla bla. Basically, if you treat it right, it’ll be solid. At the end of the day, these are 20+ year old cars. They need work. But god do they deliver when they’re right! Good luck with the build 👍👍

Mine has 460 thousand kilometres on it and has not once broken down. There's a very good reason why people have issues with them, they're sophisticated for their time and most don't know how to maintain them. For example, the manual transmission has an oil pump pressurised lubrication system which uses automatic transmission fluid. Most failures are caused from incorrect fluid. They're still extremely capable in standard form and with correct knowledge and maintenance are extreme value.

The disco 2 is a pretty darn potent off roader right out of the box. Toss some proper knobby tires on it and you can go almost anywhere anything else can go with no further modifications. And without going huge and heavy on the tires and wheels, the rest of the driveline needs minimal beefing up. It’s just all the other body related breakage you have to deal with like all the interior plastics and fabrics.

I have an ‘03, & immediately put in a Tom Woods front driveshaft, 180 degree inline T-stat, fan/fan clutch mod, & it already had the 3 amigos mod done by PO. That’s ~$1,000 and eliminates your catastrophic failures. Keep her cool and engine problems are avoided. Indeed sad to see the C4 go... in my twenties I wish I had gotten an old '78-81 C3 with the SBC 350, that was the mid-2000's, because my dad owned a white C3 from '81 to '84 just before I was born. I didn't, I went for a 2000 Maxima SE instead and got sucked into Nissan VQ's. Been driving VQ's since 2006, but sometimes I think about that fun Chevy 350 path I didn't take. 😐

Geez, from the Dodge to the Corvette and now to the Land Rover, Case and I have the same taste in cars. I’m glad to watch him go through the experience 😂👍

Discos are awesome. They are quite special to drive. Nothing quite like it. Front and rear solid axles, stadium seating, mad room inside for camping gear and only a 100 inch wheel base. If your block is not cracked, it will be dead reliable after you sort it. You must love re-engineering things though. Gotta do the CDL mod though - transforms the off road capabilities.

Make sure you get a few spare XYZ switchs, I had one exactly like this one with 106k and it went out. The only gear I had was 2ed and with less than 200hp, that wasn't fun trying to get it home in traffic.

I worked at Land Rover Dallas 2002-2003, vehicle/car sales industry/admin experience their was terrible and ruthless people. Anyways, learning about Land Rover was cool. Sold a pre-owned auction bought Discovery II to my girlfriend like 35-40k mile on it. She loved it! She told me that it was fantastic. Drove it for years. I lost touch with her so I don't know what happened to that vehicle.

Two of the three such SUVs in our little town are outwardly identical to yours. One is bone stock and stays in the shop....A LOT!....The other white one and the black one, have gone through the LS swap and coil over suspension route and are daily drivers with great dependability for both owners.

Easy to fix most issues on these trucks. Get a Tom Woods front driveshaft and your issue will be fixed. Not much you can do about the motor, change out the head gaskets as preventative maintenance.

The sunroof seals are usually ok , It's the sunroof drains that fail. Good choice though D2's are usually sound so long as you keep up the maintenance. Lost cause ranch on KZbin has some good videos on these.

The title of this video is very accurate. South Florida is used Rover HQ - and they're all junk. Once the lease is over, it starts cascading down the ladder of owners who will increasingly suffer.
