Have to add my 3 cents in as well. US government requires a minimum 8 year 100,000 mile warranty on battery packs put into passenger vehicles. Most will still be under warranty for 4 years or more. So if the battery dies before that, it will be free.... Really nice truck. Largest battery pack in the industry. If it sells for much less than what it does now, in its current configuration, Chevy will lose their shirts.

Keep in mind, this is the RST trim ( basically as top of the line/flashy/sporty trim as they plan to make). In that context it isn't too crazy when stacked against the competition of a raptor, fully loaded cyber truck or fully optioned Rivian (and in this config it is I would argue a better "truck" than any of those). Will be waiting to see what it retails for in lower spec trims.

One thing worth considering - when you are NOT on the highway with your big trailer or boat, what is your consumption, range and the cost of running? Charging at home, putting 180kw into the pack, you’re spending about $25 perhaps? When you are on the road with a big trailer, you still have a range of about 220 miles, and it will cost about $100-$120 to charge. If you are ONLY carrying big loads or towing for a living , sure, a diesel in a truck is worth it. But this seems an honest effort to meet the needs of regular truck owners, albeit with a lot of fancy stuff to justify such a price without the ‘looking at me’ styling. And with spiralling costs for fuel and service, perhaps it might make a few people think about electric trucks as more than toys.
@fastindy
@fastindy 4 ай бұрын
@@davidcottrell570A good point, but it should be mentioned that with a 200kwh battery, you will definitely need to opt for a very high current charger at home if you want the option to go from 0-100 in less than a day.
@davidcottrell570
@davidcottrell570 4 ай бұрын
@@fastindy Either you have access to a 3 phase 21.9kW/h service (100 amps), you charge at 40-50%, or fast charge and then top up at home. A 50 amp single phase charger will deliver 130kW before losses in 12 hours or so. The truck makes sense for people who tow a lot. Kyle on Out of Spec has tested all of them, and the GM was top dog, wth 800 volt charging and a huge range. I still like the mid-sized Rivian the best, but none of them are cheap.

@@TxChristophermany people tow camp trailers much more that the 150-200 miles this could likely achieve while towing. My 82kwh pack in my model 3 takes 30 minutes in a perfect situation to put 60kwh in. It can take over an hour. Tesla chargers are far better that your typical EV charger, too. My m3 averages 250wh/mi. This truck while towing is going to be north of 1kwh/mi. So, if you drive it down to 10%, then charge up to 80% on a road trip, it’ll be close to 90 minutes before you are back on the road. Imagine doing that every 150 miles. And the companies don’t necessarily bleed red ink - GM writes off the cost of development against profits from other business lines, zeroing out taxes. Do you think GM is in danger of going bankrupt because they’re building out their EV product? My Model 3 saved me around $1000.00 in the first six months of driving which ended up being roughly 9,000 miles. The savings in not buying gas alone is huge, then you save on oil changes too so yes you go through tires a little faster but your saving everywhere else including the brakes that hardly get used so those last much longer. I would compare the tire wear to an ICE sports car with the softer compounds that wear faster. This is a nice looking truck but they are charging the truck premium on top of the high end EV premium, few will even begin to be able to afford one.

It's premature to declare what the life of the tires is going to be. That said, this depends enormously on driving habits. If you're an idiot with the accelerator pedal, and you have 800 horsepower on tap, tires aren't going to last. Would you prefer the vehicle had less power so that it accelerated slower so that the tires lasted longer? You can do that, by not stepping so hard on the accelerator pedal ...

I like the design and the market will decide if it’s worth $100,000. People are already paying crazy amounts of money for trucks so who knows. Although it’s a little late to the party it does things that the other EV trucks don’t do in terms of the range and mid gate giving it a longer bed. This is a nice intro but doesn’t really show off the truck as we didn’t see the 4 wheel steering. It probably makes sense for them to come out with the top of the line version first, but I think with an electric truck you should just forget about long distance towing and have a smaller battery and the normal 250 - 300 mile range until they can do it with less battery. If you need to tow long distance stick to an ICE one. The cyber truck looks pitiful in comparison to me.

The Cybertruck will likely settle at a much more competitive price point, and it's actually quite well received in the physical world. I like what GM has done here for the most part, but the really big battery comes with a handful of problems that won't be good for long-term ownership.
@joemcdonough7509
@joemcdonough7509 4 ай бұрын
@@kenhiett5266 As far as reliability, one should be able to easily follow the the 20-80% rule with this truck's battery. 80% will deliver 350 miles for every day usage. Then charge to 100% right before you go on a longer trip. The lithium chemistry should remain healthy at those daily charge settings. That's why I always believe in getting the largest battery available, so you can both maintain long term health and still achieve your daily needs.

@@joemcdonough7509 The other competitors in the segment have plenty of range for daily. If you're the rare exception who's buying an EV to tow heavy things at distance on a regular basis, then I agree the GM makes sense, but I would argue this is unnecessarily inefficient for the vast majority. Lugging that massive battery everywhere you go is hard on everything (especially the tires), and it makes this a really poor choice for doing anything off-road.

I'm probably in the minority but I always estimate the life cycle cost for my daily drivers and my work vehicles. That cost includes maintenance estimates and fuel. For EVs, I always charge them at home, and I (try to) never do road trips (if I want to do road trips, I'd buy a fuel burning vehicle). Most of the time I drive my vehicles at least 300,000 km (~190,000 miles) and end up having them towed to a scrap yard for a couple hundred dollars (going into my pocket). I haven't run the numbers for the Silverado EV, but I'll do a quick estimate here. The results show I'd save over $90,000 in fuel costs with the EV. Read on for my "quick calc"... With EVs charged at home, I pay ~$0.12/kWh, including all fees and taxes. Fuel cost wise, that means for a typical full fill up, it would cost around 190kWhx$0.12 = $22.80. A full charge provides about 450 miles or 720 km. That works out to approximately $0.03167/km. A typical gasoline powered pickup truck costs about $0.45/km here in Canada. Over the 300,000 km (190,000 mile) life, a typical ½ton pickup will go through about $100,000 of gasoline and the Silverado EV will only go through about $9500 of electricity. As long as it is charged at home and during low price hours, the Silverado EV will save a lot of money compared to driving a gasoline powered ½ton....
