Hello guys. I am a Norwegian living in Brazil, and here we have this little guy with a 2.0 l diesel with 170 PS / 168 HP / 125 kW @ 3750 rpm. Maximum torque : 350 Nm / 258 lb-ft @ 1750 rpm. I have one of this, and have put on a bit bigger tires. And it's impressive how capable it is offroad with this setup. Tried the one with gasoline, and it's like night and day in favor of the diesel. Much stronger engine the diesel. Keep up your great work with this videos. Best on youtube. Cheers, Boern

My brother-in-law in Pescara, Italy has a turbo-diesel Renegade Trailhawk and it is absolutely better than my 2015 2.4L gasoline-burning example. The amount of torque available just off idle is one thing that you notice immediately in off-pavement operation. Another, though, is that it seems to me, from driving my brother-in-law's version, that there is a little less "nanny" in the computer programing of his. Mine has a tendency to cut power output (presumably to protect the drivetrain) when you'd rather it let you try to break the thing. His doesn't behave like that. The experience of driving his is a lot more like the experience of driving my TJ Wrangler that I used to have was when running off-pavement trails. You put it in the lowest gear, point it where you want to go, and it crawls its way there, feeling more "traditional four-wheel drive system" in operation. We didn't get a diesel powered version here in the U.S.A. I'd have one if we did.

Great hwy vehicle too, drove from Houston, TX to Rochester, NY and back with a bunch of stops along the way and it was fantastic. Only been off-road once (hills in NY), but it did GREAT! So comfortable, so cute - and the Solar Yellow color - love the high visibility (can always find it in the parking lot - ha ha)

I own a 2018 Trailhawk Renegade and for me it is almost the perfect vehicle. And I have the Falken tires on it. Road mileage on a trip is between 28 and 30 and more at times. Off-road it goes everywhere I want to go and does everything I want it to. Off-road gas mileage hits a low of 16, but generally is about 20 mpg. The road you had it on does not do this vehicle justice. I’ve had it in places where the amount of clearance and the maneuverability absolutely astounded me. Don’t seem this vehicle short. It may be small in some ways but is big in others.

6 years of ownership and our Renegade rides and drives like the day we brought it home. Not 1 issue reliability wise, my only complaint with the Renegade are the Factory Halogen Headlamps they are abysmal, My Wife and and I were driving home and hit a Owl in the middle of the road which destroyed the passenger side headlamp assembly so I hunted for a LED Upgrade Replacement which I found a pair of JW Speaker replacements that work phenomenally well, Just like the Renegade JW Speaker has also discontinued their kit for the Renegade. The Renegade is even competent in FWD form under less extreme situations like Snow and Ice, The 2.4l is a little underpowered for the weight of the Renegade but it isn't that bad, it is a fun runabout vehicle. Wife and I were also interested in the Jeep Avenger for my Wife but Jeep has decided not to bring it to the US for some darn reason. With proper maintenance the 2.4l can be very reliable, I think a lot of the stigma lies on people who do not maintain their vehicles and drive them with every check engine light lit up, then blame the manufacturer for the problem instead of placing blame on themselves.

I had the next size up, the Compass, with a 2.4l 5 speed manual, and a 2.5 inch lift. I went with 225/70/18 for tire size up from 215/65/18 and I was able to take mine off road and do pretty decent. It didn't have a true low range or even a 4 low button like this, but with a 5 speed I could keep it in 1st gear in 4wd and keep the speeds low. Mine was the 2010 model.

My daughter has a 2015 Renegade AWD, 2.4 auto and we've put about 120,000 miles on it. It's been reliable and efficient. It is a great little highway car and has more head and leg room than my Gladiator and Wrangler. We just do basic maintenance and it goes and goes. It has heated seats, heated wheel, and a nice sounding stereo. The seats are very comfortable, too, and it has plenty of room in the back seat. Great little car! Oh, and it is a beast in the snow. We never take it off road, though. No need when there are built JL/JT's in the driveway. Overall, I think the Reny is a good value and a good vehicle. It certainly is underrated.

Jeep put on a masterclass on how to ruin a vehicle with the Renegade. No advertising, no support, the initial oil burning issue that took them forever to fix, and the initial transmission programming in the early years was horrible. And they've now priced them at ridiculous levels, which eliminates them as a budget vehicle. By the time the 1.3L Turbo engine was available in the 2019 model year, the transmission shifted smoothly, the turbo engine is tons of fun, and everything works great. I loved mine, and my twins each have a '20 TH at college...they've been absolutely great. Didn't want a Subie with a CVT so we ended up with 2 Rene's. They've been excellent.

I bought my 2016 TH brand new and its still going strong. The factory skid plates are plenty good enough IMO. I run 225/65/r17 Toyo Open Country AT3s with a 1/2" front leveling kit from Valkyrie. The leveling kit is not required to run the tires but I had a lot of rake and I like the more level stance and it improves the approach and clearance. Personally I would not mod a renegade any more than I have as I really dont think its worth it. Its a great daily driver and very capable as is. Other mods include extended crossbars and a Rocky Road Outfitters front bumper/light bar with two 2 5" round led driving lights. Great for ski trips and a little off roading.

Have a 2019. And Andre is correct with how the look has the potential to be timeless. It’s one of the reasons I bought mine in 2019, is this looks different in a sea of SUV’s. Very reliable , great for the city during the week, then light off road on the weekend. Wish they kept the price low and did an interior upgrade as their entry level Jeep. Then they would have sold a lot more to have a need for a 2024 model.

I bought one of these in 2016, white and brand new. It was a Baby Jeep, sure, but it was A LOT of fun! Perfect for everyday driving, light off road capability, 4x4. It was quirky and fun. The BIGGEST knock was the 9 speed transmission, but I found a bypass system that plugged into the electrical system on the floor, and you could change the gear ratio settings, and it made it MUCH more capable! Unfortunately, it hydro planed and got rear ended in 2020. That destroyed the drivetrain and caused it to be a total loss. I miss that Jeep....

Nice video. If they put a better low range in the Renegade it would be a MONSTER. One thing that people forget about the PTU based Jeeps like the Renegade (and like the Rubicon 392, actually) , is that not only can they swap power left to right via BLD , but also, the PTU lets them swap power front to back. The other thing is , since it's all wheel drive based , and I now own a part time 4wd vehicle (explorer sport Trac) and the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and the compass Trailhawk, I can tell you that the AWD based setup of course doesn't bind when you try to steer , and that part time 4wd center lock binding is quite significant with its impact on steering. It's a completely different feel. You CAN use first gear outside of 4wd low in the renegade and the compass Trailhawk, BUT you have to manually shift it to first. Great for when you want to pull off really hard though. You've got about 100 lbs of skid plates under that renegade , it's quite significant. And, it will shock people, but it has the best breakover angle in the whole Jeep line up just about. Right next to a 2 door Wrangler ( on 32s).

"If they put a better low range in the Renegade it would be a MONSTER. " '73 Bronco: 3.50: LSD F/R X 2.42:1 C4 Auto first gear X 2.42:1 Dana 20 T-case low range = 20.4974:1 MECHANICAL compound low gear '86 Bronco II Eddie Bauer 3.45:1 f / R X 2.48 A4LD first gear X 2.42:1 BW 1350 transfer case= 20.252472:1 MECHANICAL compound low gear. How in the hell did we get anywhere in the 70s and 80s on a 20:1 mechanical compound low gear? Whatever the open, legal route on BLM or Forest Service land is, somebody in decades past has been there before you in a 70s or 80s S.U.V. with an automatic transmission and a mechanical compound low gearing of around 20:1. That was pretty much where the industry was at where vehicles with slushbox automatic transmissions are concerned. That's why Jeep was so damn proud of the Renegade Trailhawk's 20:1 mechanical gear reduction. 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk 4.33 F/R x 4.7 ZF 9 speed first gear =20.351:1 MECHANICAL compound low gear. That 20:1 low was low enough for my old Bronco to cross the Rubicon multiple times and run pretty much every train there is to run in Moab. It was low enough for my dad to go wherever the hell he wanted to on National Forest or BLM land in his Bronco II, as well. It was low enough, because the potential for 2:1 torque multiplication from the torque converter comes into play in the real world. If you were behind the wheel of that Bronco I used to have, and you came to a stop with a tire on the face of a large rock, and kept adding throttle until that tire rolled over the rock, it's not 20:1 mechanical multiplication alone that is at play. It's more like 40:1 that will automatically rise as the input and output speeds of the converter equalize. A vehicle with a hydraulic automatic transmission and 20:1 mechanical gear reduction is going to act like 40:1 when you really need it to. Let's see how that compares with REAL JEEPS which have flat fenders.... ;) In first gear, low range, the overall crawl ratio of my CJ-2A was 36.579:1 whereas the WW II MB was only 25.620:1 as they left the production line. You are probably not driving anywhere on National Forest or BLM land that somebody hasn't already been to in a stock flatfender with a worst in case crawl ratio of 25.620:1 or best of 36.579:1. The combined hydraulic and mechanical torque multiplication potential of the Renegade Trailhawk is 40:1 when the torque converter multiplication is factored in and that's already lower than "REAL JEEP" crawl ratio. Mark Allen and Company, the Society of Automotive Engineers members who worked on developing the Renegade, are not stupid people. They had a 20:1 mechanical low gear target for the Renegade TH for a reason. When that is combined with the 2:1 multiplication from a torque converter, the resulting 40:1 torque multiplication is low enough to get you anywhere a stock flatfender ever went, which is pretty much everywhere you can go in 2024 on public land. What the Renegade TH really needs is some way to bypass the algorithm nanny that wants to cut engine power at the stupidist times when you need it the most in an effort to try to prevent you from breaking the drivetrain you bought and paid for. Every North American Renegade TH I've seen will tend to want to cut power if you roll up to a rock, stop with a tire on the face of it, then try to add power until the tire slowly rolls over said rock. Mine does that and it is annoying as hell. I have friends in Italy with Renegade TH's and theirs are like driving an old-school 70s or 80s SUV with the same torque multiplication capacity and they're a lot easier to drive on challenging routes as a result. It isn't a gearing issue. It is a software issue. The vehicle has all of the gearing that it's ground clearance, approach angle, breakover angle, departure angle, suspension size, and max tire diameter can really allow it to make use of, in my opinion.

@@jerroldshelton9367 I own a European (German) Renegade TH with the 2.0 TurboDiesel. They very rarely cut the power on an obstacle BUT I am on my second gearbox with just 65.000miles. European Trailhawks even come with smaller tyres (215/60R17) don't ask me why. In the winter months I pull a 2500lbs trailer to feed wildlife and clearly the transmission is not really up to the job and you have to handle it with care. Mainly on corrugated bumpy and slushy forest roads. 3%-5% shorter overall ratio than your US versions (215/65 & 225/65R17) gives the Renegade good pulling power especially combined with the 260ft-lbs of torque @1600-2200rpm -- the transmission is sadly the weakest link by far.

@@Chriscovery My brother-in-law in Pescara, Italy has a diesel Renegade Trailhawk and driving his off pavement is almost night and day different than driving my North American spec 2015 2.4L gasoline version on unpaved routes because his doesn't seem to cut power on obstacles like mine does. And, it has A LOT more torque off-idle than mine does. In using mine, I try to respect the relatively light-duty (compared to older traditional four-wheel drives I've owned) drive train. For me, the "weak link" in mine are the computers involved in making it do what it does. Diesel power, if you have the option to have it, is definitely the way to go on the Renegade Trailhawk.

I'm not an "off roader." Ever since I was a nine year old kid driving my uncle's Willys MB on trails, off-pavement driving was always a means to an end to me, and not an end, in and of itself. I'm not looking to test my mettle or that of my machine. I'm on a trail because it leads somewhere I want to go in order to do something else when I get there. I'm the kind of person I think Jeep had in mind when they came out with the Renegade Trailhawk and back in 2015, the Trailhawk version of the Renegade was the only version of the vehicle I had any interest in buying. I'm not interested in buying a vehicle and having to throw thousand of dollars of aftermarket crap on it in order to go where I want to go. If it won't get me where I want to go on the biggest tire I can fit on it with no lift, I'm generally not interested in owning it. The Renegade Trailhawk came off the showroom floor with a 30.1 degree approach angle, a 25.7 degree breakover angle, a 34 degree departure angle, and 8.7 inches of running ground clearance. Those are actually stellar numbers, all the way around, where modern off-pavement vehicles on the U.S. market are concerned.. Couple that with trail-friendly overall height, length, width, and weight, and my interest was piqued enough to consider buying one. Add in 4.33 final drive gearing and a 4.7:1 first gear for a tick over 20:1 of mechanical gear reduction, augmented by another 2:1 of torque multiplication capability from a torque converter, and its geared as low as it needs to be to safely negotiate the majority of open, legal Forest Service and BLM routes. Add in recovery points and effective skid plates, and the only thing left for me to "wonder" about was how good the traction control system would be at masking poor articulation for the fully independent suspension. I haven't missed the lockers it doesn't have and I haven't missed the live drive axles it doesn't have, either. I think the traction control on this thing is excellent. I get 28 to 30 mpg on the highway. There is a lot of highway between me and my hunting and fly fishing spots. The thing is fuel efficient enough compared to what I've owned before that I can budget more trips to the great outdoors. Off-pavement, the thing will let me go 18 to 20 miles on a gallon of gas, and that is significant for a guy who had vehicles like a 73 Bronco that would only go 7 to 9 off-pavement miles on a gallon of gas. What I don't like about the Renegade Trailhawk: 1) There isn't much choice in real off-road tires in 215 65 17 or 225 65 17 sizes. I wish there would have been an option for 235 75 15 wheels and tires from the factory. 2) There are some very specific and thankfully rare situations where the computer algorithms of the vehicle conspire to cut engine power when you'd rather be allowed to try to break the driveline you paid for. 3) Aftermarket trailer hitches take up precious rear ground clearance. When I bought mine, the dealer was supposed to install a receiver hitch before I took delivery and the dealer did so, but with a Draw-Tite hitch and not the factory unit. I've done the Rubicon five times in my Samurai that I had, four times in my 73 Bronco that I had, five times in the TJ that I had, and the "Con was the last trail I ran the CJ 2A taking up space in my garage, and that was four years ago. I've run a lot of trails you see here on TFL in mine. The Switzerland Trail is a yawn-fest in the thing. The T-33 Plane Crash is a little more sporty and exciting. Slaughterhouse Gulch is about the toughest, most technical trail I've run in it. And aside from 225 65 17 Falken Wildpeak rubber, it's stock. No lift. Most trails I run aren't Slaughterhouse Gulch. I'm more "overlander" than "rock crawler". Off all the "lifestyle vehicles" I've owned, from a new Samurai in '86 to now, my Renegade is my favorite of the bunch and if I can keep it running for another 20 years, it'll likely be my last one. It's a really well-designed, well engineered package.

A reason you may have had trouble opening it is because you had the vehicle off camber. With the body flex the latch was sticking.

I have a 2017 renegade. I must have gotten a bad build. The CV joint broke. PTU(transfer case) grenaded itself. The motor mounts went bad at 60k miles. Lastly the shift into 5th gear is rough.

Nope it wasn't a bad build. My 16 was bad and then my poor choice of a new 2020 Jeep gladiator turned into the worst vehicle I have ever owned. The only thing the gladiator had over the renegade was the gladiator didn't burn tons of oil while the renegade did from new.

You should find a subscriber that has a Fiat Panda 4x4 and compare it with the Renegade. If Tommy wants to call it a Fiat, he should compare it with the right one.

The 2.4 and 9 speed are bad news...the 1.4t is a lot better and available with manual. These things are definitely underrated, they are a pretty unique size and have more room than the footprint suggests. Id love to find a manual with the my sky roof system one day when they are cheaper For what its worth, those falkens look great yet always struggle for traction compared to all other all terrains on the market. Especially in snow, they are 1/4 depth siped and after 5k miles turn into slicks

The biggest problem really is the engine and transmission which is very unfortunate. If this thing had a 2.5 with no turbo with at least 190hp/185lbft and a 8 speed auto i would actually have one right now

I have a 2015 trailhawk with the 2.4 L engine. Why did they stop putting that engine into the renegades? The only ones I seen recently are the turbos. I would have bought another renegade but now they are discontinued. I like it. Doing pretty good. It’s gonna have to be my last car because new cars are just too expensive. So the renegade better last lol. TFL already did videos of this Jeep back then when it came out btw. It’s very capable.

They did a good job of making it look cool. Kind of a modern version of Jessie Pinkman's Tercel, biiiiiitch. BTW, I know my 23' Ridgeline HPD is faster and just more wonderful and many areas. But, I envy the under-armor and approach angle of this cool used car. Suppose I need to buy a plasma CNC table and start making Ridgeline armor.

I had a 2016. It burned lots of oil and no dealership could put it on the lift correctly and were always crushing the pinch welds. It also had two bad tailights, bubbling paint on the inside of the door seams and what else., oh yes one day my driver door lock failed and I could not keep it shut. I would not recommend this fiat panda to anyone. I forgot the stock falken tires it came with were dry-rotting within the first year. There is a reason sales fell off and they killed it.

I had a 2016 Jeep cherokee with the tigershark engine. At ~60-70k miles the headgasket blew, and shortly after began overheating AGAIN and needed the thermostat replaced... Then I learned about the class action lawsuit concerning that powertrain and promptly got rod of that vehicle. Would never recommend that powertrain to anybody, ever.

No. If it did, the manual box would have to have a 9.4:1 first gear in order to get the same 40.702:1 - 20.35:1 torque multiplication that my 2015 gets from 4.33 final drive X 4.7 first gear X 2:1 - 1:1 multiplication from the torque converter of its ZF 9 HP transaxle.
