The only thing I don't like about this KZbin channel is that they have no experience under the hood or don't understand the purpose of the machines the manufacturers build for certain models. If you look at there Canyon AT4 here its almost 10k cheaper than the Colorado ZR2 he's talking about, so why would they compare them when the price is so far apart in this category. The truck wont have the suspension or lockers that the ZR2 has. Also to be making reviews they should at least have someone who knows how to actually drive and doesn't make constant excuses that goes for ALL of TFL's reviewers. People want honest true reviews, not "I'm too pussy to drive up a slight 4 foot rock with plenty of grip because I can't keep my foot steady." Just my opinion. If you stayed to read this long thank you for your time.

@johnspierce
@johnspierce 3 жыл бұрын
I see a ton of people complaining this is not a GMC "ZR2". I say if you want a ZR2, BUY a ZR2. This is a milder off road truck which would suit many people. It has great towing, it's comfortable and it's geared towards people that use it as commuter, hauler, off-road and toy hauler. What's bad about that? BTW, if you are towing, the ZR2 has a 5000 GVWR and this has a 7200 lb GVWR, so again -- it depends on your use case. Having said this, I think the "performance edition" of the AT4 is mostly an appearance package and is overpriced. It's a $3195 option and it contains: 17" gloss-Black aluminum wheels Spray-on bedliner All-weather floor liners Black AT4 badges Front leveling kit Black chrome exhaust tip Performance Front skid plate Performance Mid Skid Plate Off-road rocker protection Removal of front air dam The wheels: I like them. But the stock AT4 wheels are just as nice and it kind of feels like they are charging you "twice" for the wheels, right? It's not like these are high tech expensive wheels, they are just are the same wheels the Z71 has used for several years as an option+ painted black. IN the video, he mentions the Duratrac tires several times and I'm a fan -- but they come stock on the AT4 model, it's not part of the "performance edition". Removal of the air dam: Takes ten minutes. If you go to GMC's website and price out all of these options separately, it costs $1895 with the sole exception being the front leveling kit which doesn't have a price on their website. So they are charging over $1300 for two spacers per shock in the front to give you a 1" lift. You could do everything they put into this package and keep the original AT4 wheels and be under $2000, which is what I would do. ZR2's look really cool, but this is more useful as an all around truck and mild off roader.

@berkalper4742
@berkalper4742 3 жыл бұрын
the problem with the g80 is that it requires slip to lock. what you showed here Tommy is exactly why that can be very bad in some scenarios. a tire that is slipping has less grip in ALL directions, not just where the truck is pointed, so you are much more likely to slide sideways into hazards while waiting for the g80 to lock up. Second massive issue you illustrated perfectly here is the oscillating hop that starts happening when you are right at the limit of the g80 locking, that hop will also periodically reduce your grip and make it much more difficult to get over "stepped" obstacles like those razor rocks. the g80 is fine for most consumers who just need a little assistance on maybe a patchy dirt road but you cannot have the same level of confidence as a driver-activated locker.
@smarticus6384
@smarticus6384 3 жыл бұрын
Also that centrifugal mechanism is prone to failure, especially when the driver goes nuts with spinning the slippage wheel prior to the lockup. So it’s best to be a little gentle when trying to lock it up.

According to the GMC dealership AT4 is just a Denali for "Country Folk" lol. Though, since they brought back the "Hummer" nameplate. Maybe they could solve the lack of ZR2 competition by putting an updated H3T body on a ZR2 frame with a hybrid powertrain. Since the wrangler is getting a plugin hybrid, GMC can beat the Gladiator version to market. It would have to have a removable roof and doors tho.

Did you turn off traction control? I know in the ZR2 you have to hold it down for 10 seconds to actually turn it off. Once off, put it in off-road mode, and keep it in 1st gear. I think it would have made it up with traction control off. The fact you were so far into the throttle and it was cutting power leads me to believe you didn't properly turn off traction control.
@dedalliance1
@dedalliance1 3 жыл бұрын
There's traction control and stability control. If you just turn off traction control you push the button once and it turns it off. That allows you to spin the tires but not enough to slide the rear end around easily (at least when driving on a normal road). Then if you hold the traction control button down for 7 to 10 seconds it turns off stability control which is what keeps the vehicle driving straight by using breaking and switching power to different wheels. So if you take that off everything just spins as much as possible but with no lockers you're not really helping yourself by sending full un filtered power to the wheels you're just going to do burn outs at that point.

So at 5:07 you talk about the key. So honestly, you are like most people which causes the issue. The ignition is meant for the key, not for a ring of keys and key chains and whatever else. This damages the ignition tumbler. Also, with the blade keys they stick way out and look like crap and also cause more damage to tumbler again for the same reasons. ..... Having a separate key and fob is actually the best way because you can leave the truck running and then also have the fob with the rest of your keys in your pocket or on a belt loop as I do. This is always better and no noise while driving either. I am in construction and also a firefighter so for me, leaving the truck running and locked while I am near by working is very common for me to do. Even at the gas pump, leave it running but, I have diesel so no static issues here. The other option is push button start which with Jeep for now but other as well, the computer hackers can unlock you vehicle because the key fob is close and then after the push to start, as long as not turning off the vehicle, they can drive it to the chop shop. You find out when you wake up. So far good video until this point. So push button not so great either. Just my point of view and i shop for vehicles that offer this feature of separate keys and fob........

Fuel tank skid plate - I've read that GM feels its not necessary as the fuel tank is mounted above the frame rails. Press the traction control button to turn off basic traction control. Hold it down long to turn off all traction and stability assists.

What good would it do to provide a ZR2 clone? That already exists. This slots in between Chevy's Z71 and the ZR2.

You illustrated the weakness of this compromise well. Full locking diffs are just better in all cases. They may add $500 to the production cost of a $3000 package, but they give real capability rather than fake capability. And at $50 k you are paying a very high price for a modest midsize truck. Thumbs down.

A lot of hate for this truck... I don't think anyone actually claimed it's a ZR2 competitor. They've made it slightly more off-road worthy than the predecessor All Terrain trim (which I have and love btw), but without the DSSV, stock lift, and lockers of course it can't do everything the ZR2 can. I do agree it's dumb they didn't have a hitch on it. Otherwise, it looks great and will do off-road what probably 90% of people use it for like hunting.

2 thumbs down for the tow hooks since they are for a street truck that needs a light tow. Those tow hooks would snap off (DANGEROUS) if you get stuck in deep mud or try a snatch recovery. Proper rated "recovery points" are steel brackets that bolt to the frame and will not break under heavy stress or the shock load of a snatch recovery. My 2002 2wd Sonoma had a locker like the G80 and it would not engage if you had low speed wheel spin. On wet or icy roads it would kick the back of the truck sideways. I decided that my next truck would have an "OX" selectable locker that could be on all the time or off on icy roads.

It was an interesting locker forever ago, but nowadays it’s just a dumb idea. Use the elsd from the Jeep Quadra drive II axle. Both are made by Eaton anyways. . My Quadra drive I grand Cherokee had a similar setup where it used a spinning wheel to energize the clutch pack on all 3 diffs, but it was progressive and seemed to work better.
