3.31 with 37s makes for an effective axle ratio about a 3.06. If it were 3.55, it would be closer to that of a 3.31. I’d say that’s a respectable run given the run time and the lift with being well off in gearing.

With the 10 speed the rear axle gear is not as important as most of you think, that motor is gonna run in the rpm it wants and the trans will find the gear, it’s not like the old days with 3 or 4 or even 6 speed transmissions, really the only difference the rear gear is making now is in 1st and 10th for the final drive and they where not in either of those gears but for a few moments during this whole test.

Wellllll,,, yeah!! That suspension is sooo impressive. You can run as high as your ego needs or hunker down for better economy and it’s just impressive! At $25,000 it’s a bit expensive but I know of a couple of guys that have near that into their 1 tons for suspension, but their trucks are only tall, period!! No height adjustment, several hundred lbs of parts (I know, I helped them unload everything before the installation,,,. The one that I helped them deliver to the dealership, was installed by the dealership $10,000 roughly there!! 😮😮 he was just over $17,000 and then spent another $6000+ on shocks! He is pushing $24,000 installed! The truck is a F350 so it doesn’t ride particularly nice still and is really tough to get into. I’m 5’8” tall and stare at the middle height of the console from the ground. He has a cable step so if he hits it off-road it just flexes. It’s very heavy cable so is decent to get in, but I still don’t like it. The passenger side has 2 steps so his wife can get in. He has a step stool for other passengers if there’s a group. All unnecessary if you have this Elevation suspension!! The bit of extra $$ is more than worth it. There’s no way he could have towed this trailer!!! He’s too tall and the trailer would need to be lifted 6 or more inches to be level! 😂😂😂. That’s how much he had to lift his 5th wheel camper he tows!! It’s nuts! I like that truck as it is set up just about perfectly! Fun video fellas! As usual, you two get along so well and the antics are the best,,,, 😂😂. Take care & stay safe, Eh! Nice to see ya Mr Truck!!

Maybe this is a dumb question, but why does increasing wheel/tire combo weight decrease payload? To me I'd think it wouldn't affect it because the tires are under the suspension, you know what I mean? Like yeah, if you threw those tires in the bed then it would be compressing the springs more and decreasing payload you have left. But I don't see how adding weight to the axles decreases payload.
@ALMX5DP7 ай бұрын
Payload is really just GVWR minus vehicle weight, so if any part of the vehicle weighs more, it'll technically reduce payload.
@ryangansner21627 ай бұрын
I guess that makes sense on paper. But logically I don't think it should make a difference in real world application. However, I am not an engineer 🤷♂️
@ALMX5DP7 ай бұрын
@@ryangansner2162 yeah it's not super intuitive. While the suspension controls the vehicle, it also controls the unsprung parts such as the brakes, wheels and tires. The heavier those items are, requires the suspension to work harder when those things move up and down over bumps or ruts. Kind of like waving your arm without anything in your hand, versus picking up a 10lb weight and trying to wave it just as fast. It takes more effort to bring that weight back under control. Weird example but that was what I first thought of, there's probably some better analogies.

Ford does not spec these. There is still an ordering dealer who places the order and it gets shipped to Elevation for the upfit/conversion. Yes, the 3.55 is preferable, but that truck was built in May 23, which was Job 1…the 3.55 equipped axles were a constrained commodity then. Also, the payload on the sticker was based on how it left the factory and does not account for equipment added by Elevation.

I don’t know if the diff gearing matters as much as it did in the old days with these 10 speeds. I think the manf also might have different transmission gear ratios for different rear diff ratio combos that can end up making it a sort of a wash. I heard RAM did that with the 8 speed. We need to know the tranny gearing as well as the diff.

Most people use these setups as grocery getters and tow an 8-10K camper on the weekends. Some tow a dump trailer around. Start using this setup day in day out with 15K+ behind it and keep it until warranty is up and tell me how much your “3.31 fuel saving” helped your wallet when you have a worn out power train. A tall rear end gear will make that trans shift all the time, that makes heat. My 2019 PSD with 4.10 will pull away from my 2023 PSD with 3.55 and temps are lower. Yes the 4.10 truck burns more fuel but it’s not worth the premature wear to stay with a 3.55 truck if you’re actually using the truck to over 50% of its rated capacity all the time.

So what did they do like 30 years ago when not even a semi had that much power? They didn’t move bobcats around ever?

I still can't get over 6 figures for a pickup truck. This is why I would buy a used XL or XLT model for less than half that.

Why do you guys run the video backwards? You show the downhill section before the uphill? It seems backwards.

Why am I hearing these days that heavier wheel/tires change max payload? The wheels and tires support themselves, no other components carry that weight. There are considerations with gearing changes and reduced torque and hp to the ground from increased rotating mass. However none of that should matter if you are not trying to race loaded.

What effect could the altitude have on a turbocharged/intercooled engine with electronic fuel/air management?
