Five Star looks to have a very reasonable setup here. They have done very well to limit the boost to 8 psi and have a nice, big intercooler on it. The torque curve is very nice for an engine with a centrifugal supercharger. If I owned one, I would limit the tow capacity to about 30% less than the original factory rating, and be careful with my right foot to only use as much power as I need to get up those hills. I loved the 0-60 run with the boosted truck and the 15000 pound trailer, but at 16 seconds it does show that you're not going to outrun traffic when loaded that heavily. Save the power for when the truck is running free.

Great video!! That's a very nice, reliable, safe upgrade to the Godzilla power plant. And, WOW!! What a performance difference!!I like how you broke down the financials at the end. But you didn't mention a few things... First, and probably most importantly, is you can fill up ANYWHERE. You don't have to go hunting for diesel fuel. If you're not in a rural area, that could be a challenge. You also don't have to pay the premium price for diesel. Not sure about the rest of the country, but around here, one pays between $.50 - $1.00 more per gallon for it. Second is you don't have the very high costs associated with diesel repairs. Everyone I've ever talked with complained about how freaking expensive every trip to the shop is. You can't take a diesel in and leave with a bill less than $1500. And there's supposedly ALWAYS 'something else wrong'...That's not usually the case with gasoline engines. They tend to just keep working (and fail catastrophically if/when they do!!) Third - what would be the difference in cost of ownership for a year between this and a diesel? Something I'd be interested in is seeing a real-world comparison of fuel mileage between this beast and a diesel. You guys love tow tests - can you take the beast for a full-tank tow test then compare the fuel consumption with a comparably powered diesel? Again, great vid on a pretty wicked truck!!

Could you do a breakdown then as far as what kind of fuel economy this conversion with the supercharger or pro charger would get versus a diesel? And then factor in the cost of the fuels and see which is really more efficient and better bang for the buck. The way I understand it is that diesel produces more BTUs than gasoline so I would think the diesel would still be more efficient and get better fuel economy. Also, I would imagine that the diesel would have no problem seeing 200,000 miles where is a supercharged gas engine that may be a stretch. Maybe I’m wrong

Andre, if you are going to spend the cash on a blower for this 7.3L (cam in block), it would be worth it to port the heads and swap in a cam. It’s not too expensive and with a set of headers and exhaust, you tap into much more HP than a cam/ported engine that is not blown. A larger damper pulley is a cheap add on that adds even more RWHP. IMO the 4.30 gear would help a lot on low end for towing. If the Ford does not have a posi, Auburn makes one that would again provide even keeled delivery of power to both wheels instead of one. I have a similar setup on my Tundra’s 5.7L and it’s a towing BEAST. The 10 speed’s OD keeps revs down for good hwy mpg. Good video! TFLT is a great channel.

@carculturenation2166
@carculturenation2166 3 жыл бұрын
I’m sure it voids the warranty. But think of a mustang. Those ten speed transmissions are handling 800-900whp all day. This has weight so I wouldn’t push it that far but the trans is probably more heavy duty. The 10r80 ten speed in the mustang has gotten cars into the low 8s making 1000whp and with a sealed 5.0 stock internal coyote and that trans built its now handling 1300whp and running 7s. So them 10 speeds have been doing the damn thing. If it wasn’t for the lack of torque the coyote would be a way better engine for the f250. Ford should just throw a blower on a coyote and use that.750hp 650lbft torque reliably. Oldschool Pushrod 7.3 Godzilla makes the torque

Everything sounds great, except the price . The whole time I was watching it I was thinking what a great alternative this is to a diesel for the guy that tows a lot and needs a little more jam than a stock gasser can supply ..but doesnt want the cost of a diesel. I am not a fan of modern diesels. I actually refuse to own one . I have a 2019 super duty with the 6.2 gas engine . Despite my dislike of the new diesels.. I do tow pretty heavy fairly often and there is times I see the shortcomings of the gas engine . Specifically fuel economy and engine braking on mountain pass descents . This is where the diesel thrives . With this super charger only being a couple grand cheaper then the diesel option, I dont see the benefits . If it was 3-4 grand all in .. it would be a nice compromise. But at 3/4 the cost of a diesel .. you are losing factory warranty .. you still don’t have torque of the diesel .. and you surely won’t have the fuel economy.. and the biggest thing you are giving up is an exhaust brake for engine breaking with heavy loads . I dont see them selling a lot of these at this price .

I agree with gord for the most part except the part about voiding factory warranty, other comments suggest it won't. I personally don't know much about engines in general I just go based off of what I hear and read on the internet. My concern has never really been about the performance side of things but the reliability side and longevity of something before it breaks. From what I understand that I have heard is that newer ford trucks aren't as dependable as they used to be with questionable engine design and electrical systems. The cost to fix these things out of warranty are astronomical and honestly most automakers are this way not just ford. I do think in some regard ford maybe slightly more expensive to maintain especially the newer diesel trucks. Dont get me wrong I love the look, sound and always enjoyed smell of a diesel running. Maybe I'm weird but I like to see newer ford powerstroke diesel trucks but I would never own one because of the costly maintenance. The classic 7.3 from I think the early 90s I hear is the holy grail of diesel pickups except for the Cummins. For me I'd pick the old 7.3, dodge just leaves a bad taste in my mouth even if it is a Cummins. Well I'm getting off topic here but anyway in the debate of whether to go with the new gas truck with the turbo or diesel. I would probably pick the diesel as well just because adding the turbo without strengthening key engine and transmission parts I think you're asking for trouble later on. I also think as he said with the diesel youd have better fuel economy and torque than with the gas. Not to mention using premium fuel, that's going to be costly at the pump. Like I said I don't have much knowledge on the matter this is just personal opinion but I would still take the bone stock diesel or just live with the bone stock gas truck and its limitations.
