I work the RV industry, the 7.3 produces close to what the early 2000s diesels out out, they towed the 5th wheels just fine and with an awful 4 speed transmission plus in general the 5th wheels were a bit heavier back then. This new 7.3 gas and 10 speed is the ticket 👍

Although I've never owned an RV I studied them for years. Back then Ford V8 was under powered and the V10 was a gas hog. The 7.3 is a game changer because all of a sudden I wanted one even though I'm no expert in RV's. I admire Ford for never stop tinkering and came up with a winner. Thanks for confirming what a layperson like me suspects.

Good review - I have a 2020 F250 Godzilla w/ 3.55 and FX4. I don't tow much, but haul 2 to 3000 pounds almost weekly and needed a 3/4 ton truck. This guy nailed my reasons for not going with the diesel. $10,000 will buy a LOT of 87 octane. I live in CA and diesel is sometimes $.50 to $.75 more than gas anyway, the breakeven for diesel just doesn't happen for me. I regularly get 14.5 and have gotten 17 - lowest was 13 with a load and lots of hill country. My truck will be a year old in May - I have 39,400 miles, NO problems, $69 oil changes every 7500 miles. I will trade for another when the clock reaches 250,000. This is a great truck!

I don't tow at all but do need little more payload to about 3400 lbs. So, my next truck is going to be 2023 F350 Godzilla SRW w/3.73 LWB platinum. No moon roof. I don't need FX4 nor 5th wheel prep. In Texas, diesel is $1 more than regular gas.

I was a big diesel nut forever but have since shifted back to gassers. I love my old first-gen PSD--gets good fuel economy, tough engine, relatively simple. And because it's not a Cummins, I didn't have to pay through the nose for it. Still though, anything whatsoever on that engine breaks and it's just *so* expensive. Got a little 4.8 V8 in a GM van now, it's hilarious how cheap everything is. Gets about the same mileage as the giant old 7.3PSD and tows the same amount as far as both vehicles are configured. And that's comparing to an old-school diesel with really no emissions equipment at all. The new stuff is just a nightmare. Can't imagine being a farmer nowadays with HUGE FLEETS of new machines that simply can't be field-repaired--gotta wait for the tech to show up in the middle of harvest. And this is... progress, somehow? Okay.

I just traded my 2018 6.2 with 3.73s for a 20 7.3 with 3.55s. Night and day difference. The same climbs with my 7k travel trailer where I was in 2nd gear losing speed at 5500-6000 RPM with the 6.2 I am in 5th or 6th at 3500-4000 without having it floored and can still accelerate up the hill if I wanted to. I’m in Arizona, so the heat and elevation are a tough combo in the summer, we shall see how I feel about it after pulling up the mountains when it’s 105 out, the 6.2 never got hot or failed me, but you could tell you had lost some power in the heat. I haven’t done a long highway pull yet to see the mileage, but empty with mostly in town I’m about 1.5 mpg better than the 6.2. I’ve got the 20 inch wheels on this one, so a little less effective gearing as well because of that.

The new 3.0L Duramax engines are excellent. I have the LM2, or the first generation. It's quiet, reliable, and gets 21mpg in town and 30+ mpg on the freeway. I can easily tow 4 tons up a 6% incline with no real strain other than burning more diesel and DEF. As far as maintenance, it's not much different than a gas engine. As long as you change your oil and fuel filter a bit more than the factory recommends, you'll easily get 150K miles before any major maintenance. Then it's maybe $2000 for a new oil pump belt and other maintenance items. That's not bad considering you'll get another 150K trouble-free miles. Whether it's gas or diesel engine, you're always looking at some maintenance. The nice thing about the diesel is the high torque at low RPM. Less strain means fewer repairs. It's not uncommon for diesel engines to go 500-600K miles before needing some kind of overhaul.

I change my oil every 5000 miles and one change is $175 no fuel filter or water separate on the next oil change I do everything. Oil, two different fuel filters, water and water separator and it’s $300 and that is me doing my own oil changes. I get maybe 12.5 mpg in town and 15 on the freeway, 6” lift with 37’s sucks ass bought it that way. My truck is heavy. It’s around 9700 pounds when I have my 32 gallon fuel tank filled. I have 100 gallon tank in my bed so I’m heavy. I’m just so tired of how expensive this truck has gotten and I love this shit out of that thing. Emissions killed the modern diesels. I'd love a diesel mainly for the better mileage for traveling and overlanding. But the new diesels are SO complicated, SO restricted, SO hard to work on yourself, SO expensive to fix it just ruins the idea of ever owning one. I'd take the lower mileage of the 7.3 because end of the day it's cheaper, much more simplistic, can work on yourself easily and has none on the emissions. I'm sure Ford knows all this hence why they introduced the 7.3.

I have a 6.7 with some parts that fell off and they'd have to pry this truck out of my cold dead hands. The power is unreal. However, the CP4.2 is cause for concern I'm not going to lie. I have a disaster prevention kit and use fuel additives. Since it doesn't have "certain parts" this truck has been just routine maintenance the last 4 years. It's so dumb what emissions do to these trucks.

Agree with just about everything stated in this video. Especially the modern diesel’s emission systems and just how prone to failure they are, let alone the additional sensitivities. Been contemplating going with a newer gen tow rig, possibly a 22+ f350 7.3 with 4.30’s but I can’t let my 12v go ...it just works and has never failed me once. Not mentally there yet to move on. Again...great video explaining in raw form the realities of newer gen CR diesel engines.

I have heard a lot of KZbin's review a these trucks trucks and I have just turned it off within the 1st few minutes. This dude legit has spoken nothing but the truth. Very comprehensive and concise. I too I'm sick and tired of diesels with def systems. I owned a 2014 Freightliner paired with a Cummins that ended up costing me nearly $23000 to get it repaired through freightliner. Due to the def system taking a dump. I personally feel anything being towed over 15 k pounds frequently needs to be on the back of a semi. Semis have the right hp, torque , Transmission and axle combination for pulling weight. I just don't believe or see how you can down size these components making them miniature pieces to fir in a pick up truck and expect reliability or equal pulling performance. To me diesel pickup trucks are not built to pull semi weight. I could be dead wrong. It's just my opinion.

any gas motor will be great for towing, as long as you put a top mount supercharger on it for that max low end torque. GM also has GM engine trans and axles in the 2500 gas segment.

A damn good overview of the existing Diesel engines in pickups. Gasoline is cheaper than diesel. The gasoline engine is cheaper to buy and to maintain, and that doesn’t include major repairs which are astronomical for the diesel. Labour costs between the diesel and gas… there’s a major difference with the rate for diesel, nearly double the cost of a gasoline engine. There’s sooo many pluses to going back to gasoline. If you’re towing or hauling on a regular basis, go big or go home as the ole Sayin went.

So you’re saying to go with a big diesel semi instead of the pick-up trucks cause they don’t hold up for heavy pulling. ( I have a Godzilla myself and so far it has impressed me in many ways including going off road with it so to me that’s a winner💪🏽💪🏽🍺🍺

Chevy's 6.6L has a cast iron block and is a push-rod engine and a forged crank. Can you speak to that? I guess the one negative you might point to with GM is that they don't have a solid front axel but rather independent front suspension.

same here, I get so much shit for driving a gas truck. They are always having issues with the new trucks or being left stranded because they are trying to keep their 20 year old diesel with 300k miles running. They also spend a ridiculous amount of money on repairing them or upgrading them. I just do not understand how people can justify throwing money away like that.

That 10-speed transmission is a cooperative effort between GM & Ford engineers and is used in both of their company's heavy-duty vehicles,...now that is progress when that happens with that level of cooperation between competitors.
