Automotive Inquiry just put out a really good series comparing the Chevy 6.6 gasser with the Ford Godzilla, pulling about 15k. He showed on video the difference between using cruise control and not using it while going down hill. No surprise, cruise control maintained speed while not using cruise control allowed the trucks to speed up. The idea that people don't use cruise control while towing, comes from years gone by when cruise control systems were truly terrible. Nowadays things have changed, and if you want to properly test vehicles, you should test them for things they've been designed for.

@Kenneth O A supercharger is connected to the engine and therefore has ZERO LAG. You just said with a small turbo it has HARDLY ANY LAG. You seem to be confused because "hardly any" isn't the same as NO LAG. And if you work on your reading comprehension, you would know my biggest issue with turbos is the excessive amount of tubing (compared to a supercharger) and because it is connected to the exhaust the heat from the exhaust is transferred to the turbo then to the intake air. Any discussion about turbos vs. superchargers talks about parasitic loss from the supercharger vs. turbo lag and heat transfer from turbos.

When I towed my RV over all the mtn chains with my 18’ Colorado V6… I made a simple rule. No rpms above 3,500 (for longevity sake). I was still passing semi trucks like they were standing still. However, at times my truck was only doing 45mph. I just let the truck slow before allowing it to downshift. The shorter downshifts are MUCH easier on the engine and transmission both. That is why diesel trucks last so long!!! Keep the rpms low.

@jayhiggins5239 true. I had a king cab Frontier pro 4x then I had my son and a rear facing car seat was a no go. 2500hd crew cab gas solved all my problems.

Dude utility trailers are like 10x better than bed-load. I did a bed load of my dirt bike ONCE - Now I use a light-weight utility trailer with motorcycle front-wheel chock and it's ridiculously better :D Honestly I don't get the hate for the 5ft beds when trailers are almost always better (just make sure you get a trailer with tires rated to interstate speed or change 'em out).
@jasonperry7970 Жыл бұрын
@cputeq007 it is easier to load a utility trailer but the 5 foot beds are strictly a manufacturer convenience and bean counter decision. Not only is it cheaper to produce the truck itself with less steel but they can produce more trucks per hour because more can fit inside the building at any given time. This is why you get the same engine across models. It's cheaper. I went 2500hd crew cab gas 6.0 because I can put my 750 lb atv in the bed, tow a 7000 lb, 33 foot camper (with a 700 lb tongue weight) and still have almost 1500 lbs of payload left for people and other gear. As tfl has said for over a decade now, these small trucks are "lifestyle " trucks. I loved my king cab Frontier but it was not enough truck once kiddos and car seats come along. ( rear doors open backwards and require the main doors open, no go when small kids are involved)

@jamesturner3151 Жыл бұрын
I can't think of a single truck with the Payload being half of the towing capacity. Seems like an odd observation.
@slmjake Жыл бұрын
@James Turner what I mean is my truck is advertised to have a 12000 lb tow rating. But my Powerboost payload is 1300 pounds for a crew cab. Weight of Two passengers and gear is and dog is 650 pounds. So now I can legally haul an additional 650 pounds, right? Tongue weight should be a minimum of 10 to 12%. So a 6000 pound trailer is max that I can tow and not exceed payload rating for a truck advertised with a 12k tow rating. Half of what is advertised! Sorry I confused you guys but hope you understand that math. It's BS regarding what you can tow because you eat up payload via tongue weight and passengers well before you reach max tow.

Towing heavy with this little truck, I might go up a grade in oil viscosity. And add an transmission oil cooler, or a larger one if it already has one. Personally I'd rather get a base model half ton than this Colorado Trail Boss, I think even with the same engine it would have a higher rating and it would feel more stable towing the same weight.

Lighter toy haulers (small one less than 5K) with 2 dirt bikes or maybe to 2 adv bikes (1000K). I would want to stay under way under 6K. Looking at the temps I'd say maybe put that external trans cooler. Will defiantly be watching for more updates.

@Justin Toppings spend about 15 minutes understanding how HP and Torque are related. The Ratings for this truck are 310hp and 390tq. The " high output " is the same 310hp and 430tq. For that to be possible, it means that while the has a slightly higher peak , it tappers off faster after the peak, than the " turbo plus". If the HO engine was able to hold the torque peak for the same RPM range as the Turbo plus engine, the HO would have a corresponding increase in HP. I can't wait to see the Dynos. The lower output will actually have a better torque curve, more importantly, area under the curve. The HO might "feel" quicker during while the turbo builds boost , but the standard turbo plus might actually be faster due to the better torque curve.
@EmergeFromTheAshes1 Жыл бұрын
@@terrencejones9817 pretty sure it can have a higher peak torque at one point and higher hp at another. It doesn't have to fall off it's torque curve. So let's say the HO makes 430 while the other makes 390 that could mean for 2000 rpms the HO would have higher torque values than the regular and by the time it builds peak HP is then tapers off to be the same torque as the non HO version.

Vehicles are far more reliable than they were in the past. Back in the day odometers only had 5 digits because you weren't expected to go much farther, people used to brag about "rolling her over". Now 100K miles isn't even thought of and it's expected. People don't even have a problem buying a used car with over 60+K miles on it because they expect it has a lot of life left. Nobody was thinking that when buying a used Chevy in the 80's.

If this engine has to be used repeatedly to move this kind of load it will not last long. For small turbo charged engines like this to put out this much output they will have to be within boost frequently. Boost = much higher internal pressure and heat = higher rate of wear on the internals no matter how robust they might be. Ontop of that the displacement for this engine is quite high for a 4 cylinder. Typically the larger the engine the more cylinders you want to have to act as a counter-balance for each other so that smoothness isn't compromised. Im thinking this engine will vibrate quite a bit more than the outgoing 6 cylinder especially at lower rpm. 4 cylinders have their place but i dont believe they are well suited for applications like this when having to deal with this much curb weight on a vehicle, especially if you plan to tow often. Cant just be looking at the HP/Torque. The fact that they would even use this in the Silverado is strange to me as there are even higher performance requirements for that class of vehicle. Love the video guys!!!!
