Yeah, when Toriyama explained the origin of Android 16 in an interview, he specifically mentioned that Gero's son was killed by a bullet, so canonically it wasn't Goku. I kind of do wish that what TFS did was the canon because that'd add so much more depth to Gero's vendetta against Goku. Also, fun fact from the same interview: Gero purposefully programmed 16 with a gentle personality because he didn't want him to be destroyed in battle.

I think the abridged often gets the storytelling better than the original. Like this time chamber part, in the original vegeta spends another year in the chamber and doesn't comeback any stronger, which makes no sense since by the time we get to the boo saga he's supposedly in the same level as gohan was in the cell fight. Also with the strategic use of the specials footage like here where they provide motivation to Dr Gero.

Lets just acknowledge the fact that Akira is a mangaka with good ideas, but terrible memory and often inconsistent writting. There is no way you can logically justify some of the things he did. Dragon Ball is a great anime, but also deeply flawed. The abridged series corrected many flaws in the original while making things funny. Which is one of the reasons why this abridged dub is so great, it works as a standalone, goes faster than the original (which is a good thing given sometimes it took 2 episodes to trow a single kamehameha), and the writing is much more consistent.

Actually they only missed 1 world martial arts tournament. After the insanity that was the 23rd tournament (Goku vs Piccolo) and the entire island being reduced to a barren wasteland they stopped having it for quite sometime. It restarted with the 24th tournament which Mr. Satan won since they were all training for the androids. They also seemed to increase the time between the tournaments. It was originally 3 years but they seemed to up it every 7 since the 25th tournament was the one that occurred at the start of the Buu saga.

I grew up with Abridged, with very early memories of my sisters watching the Freeza saga. My middle sister is in the boat where she's seen both, now, thanks to me showing my mom(I'm actually not sure if Mom had seen DBZ beforehand), so our oldest sister has not seen Abridged, and I kinda want to make her watch it with us next time she's in town lol. My brother is not a big fan of DB in general but has at least shown interest in watching Abridged.

Not really. It's just a coincidence. It's just a funny way to emphasize Cell's narcissistic personality and excessive feelings of grandiosity. No part of Dragon Ball Z has ever made reference to Cell's personality being a direct reflection of his genetic heritage. If that were true, then he'd be a complete idiot like TFS Goku. His genetics are only apparent in his abilities.
