Oh I so wish I had friends to play this. Love, love, love Real life RPGs and love, love, love walking dead!!! 😢

It's not the same as playing with friends but the Year Zero engine adapts easily to Solo play. A great way for GMs to learn the game before they run it for others.

You mentioned All Flesh Must Be Eaten, which certainly at the time was a pretty impressive game. I don't think we really used terms like this back then, but it might almost count as a "toolbox." There was a full-fledged system, so you could play the game. But it was a toolbox to create whatever sort of zombie game you and your group might want. More like Romero's Dead trilogy, more like the Resident Evil games (or movies!); how about Dead Space, or something weirder? It gave you the ability to design zombies with a wide range of ability and style. By its nature, it didn't really capture a certain vibe, being more of a "generic" zombie rules set. They even had official books for doing stuff like Pulp zombies and Kung Fu zombies. The Walking Dead RPG definitely looks like it captures the vibe of the show and maybe the comics, as opposed to being more open to different types of zombie tales. I only got to actually play All Flesh Must be Eaten once, but I remember the system working well. These days, it might be a bit crunchier than I have time for, but back then, I loved the way you could build your monsters, especially because it wouldn't take much effort to drop the "zombie" and just make them whatever monsters you wanted them to be.

I mentioned AFME because I'd always heard good things about the series. Sadly, I've never peeked at it though. ~ Jeff

Really like what we have so far from Free League's Walking Dead. They've leaned into the themes of long-term survival really well, but still got good stress and lethality. Mostly great artwork (although I've no idea why they went with that cover - maybe it's just me). Re other zombie RPGs: I never played AFMBE, but the Unisystem was great for Buffy, Ghosts of Albion and Conspiracy X; I've heard some pretty patchy comments about Outbreak Undead, so haven't tried that; conversely, I've heard great things about Dead End (by Atomic Ninja) for Savage Worlds (Zombies are individually weak, but gang-up is likely and terrible, and a bite is fatal). I really ought to pick that up. Prior to Walking Dead Universe, my go-to zombie system was Fantasy Flight's The End of the World: Zombie Apocalypse. It's a really lightweight and fast system, but I've not explored it beyond Shaun of the Dead style one or two shots where mostly everyone's dead by the end.

Very nice.... "The Darkest Age" from 2013 is a great hidden-gem zombie ttrpg that takes place in Europe....over 350 pages of content.

That looks really good though I don’t know which to get the core rules or the starter set

I know a lot of people picked up both during the Kickstarter. I certainly like the slew of dice which you get in the starter. ~ Jeff
