What helped me learn the reverse pattern is that I never actually griped the shifter I cup my hand in front of the shifter so even if I impulse bump fwd it doest do anything I just punch the dash and learn via pain :-)

I am with you on the reverse pattern shifting. With me last car we put a friend's engine and trans (12.5:1 496 with a th400) in the car. It had a reverse pattern manuel valve body and i never got used to that before we pulled it back out. It was crazy.

How do you handle downshifting to decelerate but not stop? I have a mvb going in but i'm told you cant downshift until you stop.

If it has engine braking then you should wait until you’re almost stopped to downshift. If it doesn’t have engine braking then you can downshift whenever you want as long as you’re not applying the accelerator and it’ll just act like it’s in neutral until you roll into the throttle again. The manual VB I had in this video had engine braking. The one I have in the th400 in the more recent videos does not.

Limiters set at 7200 but it went way higher because 1st gear and 100+mph don’t mix. 😜

If you’ve ever been in a third gen, there’s a HUGE hump in the passenger floorboard to make room for the catalytic converter. So the bottle is basically stuck in a hole between that hump and the firewall. 😉

I’m already thinking about ordering a forward pattern and swapping them out and selling this one. I’m gonna give it a few weeks and see if I can get used to it.

After you have done something the same way for 20-30 years, it’s hard to re-train your brain when you are concentrating on the rpms & trying to keep the car straight. I’m sure the reverse valve body has it’s place in certain circumstances, but the best place I found for one was as a boat anchor 😂

Bad part is I’ve raced for 30 years and have had manual cars that were bump up or down depending on transmissions and knock on wood, never had any issues but I’ve driven trucks, dump trucks, semis and everyone in my family has used both types of trans and I guess it’s just from being used to switching between trucks and getting used to them within the first mile or two. On my families race cars/trucks and even my own I generally take it for a mild ride around the parking area and where we have our trailers just to make sure everything is what I remembered. I’m getting that trans and manual valve body for my 3rd Gen

My TH350 on my built 5.3 if bump forward to shift up and backward to shift down.

That would be a forward pattern valvebody. As explained in the video, we switched to a reverse pattern.

One thing that helps a little is driving a manual - your brain is already trained to think of that big 1st to 2ed as down.

Doesn’t help at all when every upshift is down and every downshift is up. Only thing that helps is driving and getting used to it. As you can see from the more recent videos I haven’t missed a shift racing it yet. 😉

It’s a Manual valve body no check ball or anything it’s automatic with nothing in it except hydraulic pressure. You have to shift it for it

Manual valvebody doesn’t shift itself brother. Also this is a th350 so it’s not computer controlled like all the other swaps on the channel.

Haha I remember years ago I had a clapped out 69 impala obviously straight piped. There was a dude with a mint purple mopar “can’t exactly remember what” I was passing him at an intersection and through my shit right into reverse trying to be cool and hit him with a rev. So totally embarrassing 😂
