In order to endanger Channel Memberships, I'd have to lose monetization entirely, and if I haven't done that in the past 7 years with the type of things I upload (Games, Streams, Video Essays and EWWCS), then there is effectively zero risk. Patreon has been good, but it's incredibly difficult to keep up with users. The member list doesn't always update, causing me to "miss" people that are members but not on the list. This is far better for the users, as KZbin automatically updates in near real time for me, and I can see everything. It also allows me to consolidate my channel benefits, as with Patreon, I had to unlist videos and then post the links on that site, which ran the risk of non-members accessing said content. Basic linguistics: there's a good reason why she would mispronounce his name even after hearing it. You actually don't hear sound the way you think you do. Because any brain that comprehends complex language must be pattern-seeking by nature, it biases towards the sounds of its own language, or sounds its familiar with. When you hear a sound in another language that isn't yours, your brain will actually interpret it as the closest sound to one used in your language. That's why we hear the Japanese mixing up the L and R sounds. They actually aren't. They don't have either L or R in their language, but instead a unique sound that's basically between the two. They use that sound. Because our brains aren't familiar with it, but can definitely tell it isn't the sound it should be, we hear the closest equivalent sound that's wrong instead of the sound that's actually being made.

Like in Russian, we have no /th/ sound, so before learning English, it literally sounds like a /z/; same with the /a/ sound in "that" or "hat" - it doesn't exist, so the words "brad" and "bread" sound exactly the same (and did to me, too, before I became fluent in English).

I practically had a stroke learning how to pronounce the “r” in mandarin. And I still feel like I’m doing it massively incorrectly, no matter how many times my native speaking teacher assured me that I was pronouncing it correctly (or at least, in a way that was understandable). Because I hear 人 as “wlren” or something similar, but to pronounce it it’s like a weird “zhr” cousin that never quite makes the “zh” sound. If that sounds strange, it feels strange. Like, tones aren’t difficult (sometimes I get them wrong when speaking, but I correct myself quickly because I speak with a sing-song voice in English so it sometimes slips through in my cadence), you connect the sound to the picture and you picture the character when you speak. But the “r” sound? Tears.

17:17 I always thought that given that Sigourney's character is researching pandora, she would have spent ample time studying the Na'Vi as a species as well as a culture. This would include their diet to better understand how the Na'Vi are and, by extent, how the avatars bodies would function. In my mind she knew that the fruit wasn't dangerous and possibly even something that is consumed in the Na'Vis diet and Jake trusted her so its okay
@josefstalin9678 Жыл бұрын
Hell even if they weren't doing the whole avatar body thing one of the first things I would do if I were colonising a new land would be finding reliable sources of food/water which includes finding out if the food/water native to that land is poisonous or not. Not to mention it was clearly being cultivated in some sort of garden, not on a wild plant so if they're farming these plants that tells me there's a 99% chance they're edible. These reasons, combined with yours and what birdman says about it looking like a fruit and the common sense of "why would she hand him something poisonous and not warn him?" goes to show that Jeremy often struggles with visual storytelling.

Fun fact: here in Canada, some Indigenous peoples thank the animal's spirit for providing meat and fur when killing the animal and even do the same when cutting down trees! My thought process was that there is oxygen on Pandora, but the other gases in the atmosphere are balanced in such a way that it's toxic. Another possibility is that the level of oxygen in the atmosphere is itself high enough to be toxic. Yes, oxygen toxicity is a thing. It's why there are other gases in the air that we breathe; to dilute the oxygen and make it actually breathable. Atomic theory's a bitch. Specifically, our atmosphere is made up of a mixture of: Oxygen, Nitrogen, Argon, with nitrogen making up approximately 78% of the air we breathe. That's right, we breathe in more nitrogen than oxygen (which makes up about 20% of the air we breathe)

It's not racist in and of itself, it's just fuckin useless, and unfortunately more often than not completely misused AND misinterpreted. Like Birdman explained its supposed to detail how alongside personal bias in a racist context, there are also elements of it in the legal and government system. Here's the issue, "Racism = prejudice + power" is a useless distinction to make. Obviously people who are racist and have any measure of legal and/or government power will use it to further their own racist biases, shitty people do shitty things, you don't need a distinction there at all. The only purpose of it i've ever seen in the years i've known of its existence is to give members of "more oppressed" races license to shout racial slurs or make generalizations about "more privileged" races, then when called out for being racist, to deflect by saying they can't be racist because of some academic definition most people don't use while ignoring the fact that they said something bigoted to someone else. One thing that has bothered me about Avatar that I don't know if I ever put into words before is that, somehow, in the distant future, you can perfectly transfer conciousness to a completely artificial alien body (that is seemingly perfect and undistinguishable from the real thing), but what kicks off the plot of the movie is that Jake is in a wheelchair. No, like, really. His twin dies, army wants to save money because the alien body is expensive, but his emotional investment is feeling useful again since being discharged for his injury. Suspense of disbelief and all, but remote mind transfering into artificial bodies, as expensive as it is, makes it seem like fixing Jake's problem would be a cinch with any kind of healthcare of after care or anything.
@Th3Birdman Жыл бұрын
Actually, that is something they address in this film, as Miles makes a deal with Jake, stating that if he does what they're asking him to do, he'll get "his real legs" back for him. My guess is it is prohibitively expensive, like most things in a capitalist society that actually fixes real issues. If we had the cure for cancer, that ish would cost an arm and both Jake's legs 😂
@jpcsdutra Жыл бұрын
@@Th3Birdman Oh yeah, I do get that point. But my issue with it is that, regardless of how expensive the alien transfer tech is, that, by existing, should probably plummet the price or whatever corrective surgery or apparel Jake needs; just by orders of magnitude on what the same field of science can do. ... however I'm aware of how medicine works...

my favourite thing when the evolution of an alien species is sinned is that it also makes the assumption that evolution only produces good traits, for an example consider the Pumpkin Toadlet, this species of frog is so small their semi circular canal cannot function correctly and the fluid within them does not move as it should, the result of this is these tiny frogs just go ragdoll mode whenever they jump and have next to zero control over their landing, BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! Certain subspecies of the pumpkin toadlet got screwed over even more by evolution as they are incapable of hearing sound on the frequency of their mating call. Not only is evolution a constant ongoing process, it also doesn't always result in beneficial results.

its because our minds physically cannot think of something otherworldly, or something that doesn’t look like us because we dont *know* anythinng other than us (or something like that)

I think we should aslo shut down the “prometheus school of running away from things” in this particular situation. I can’t imagine mass panic and loud sounds is going to make you think straight… but it will make you run straight though.

Ok, that "ffsfllslsle sin" quote was so funny. 12:08 I haven't laughed much at cinemasins content at all lately, but that was hilarious. I can see why you still enjoy them Birdman.

2:56 Also, maybe there's too much oxygen in the atmosphere?

As for sin 34, it’s closer to “Tor-rook”

For the oxygen thing in sin 2, there's also the fact that too much oxygen can also kill you (our atmosphere is around 70% nitrogen)

Finally someone said it 🗣️ I love the movie and despite some flaws I think it was ahead of it's time and cinemasins is sometimes.. lacking knowledge like they just watched it in the background while vacuuming. Also the reason the Na'vi mispronounce Jakes name is because their language lacks those sounds (from what I remember when I tried learning Na'vi)

I’m glad to see you understand when they connect the ponytails it’s not what you think it is that’s just them connecting they’re nervous systems they explain us so you are right there is a reason why they’re wearing loin cloths.

IIRC Some military officers during The French and Indian war would dress in traditional native clothes and partake in ceremonies in order to gain trust and build alliances.

Now that we learned of the amazing perks of the memberships, onto the favorite sins of Pandora: 1) And what the hell is that? 2) It's almost as if that's job as researchers and scientists 3) Why am I suddenly thinking of Justin Timberlake? 4) Sinning the thing you do yourself. You even list yourself as "the Narrator" on IMDb 5) Eywa! 6) Skip! 7) And let me stop you right there because you are answering yourself 8) Again, Neytiri told us why: 9) Alright, that was a Beremy level sin 1 sin off: I'll never forgive them for letting Blade Runner 2049 hung out to dry Sentence: Toruk Macto!!!

I loved The Way of Water. But I will say that as impressed as I was (literally saw it 4 straight times in 3D IMAX!), I wasn't as floored as I was when I saw this movie for the first time in the theater. I actually knew nothing about the first movie when I went to see it. Saw it with a girl I was on a date with and my best friend. I didn't g.a.f. about the movie, I was thinking about what I wanted to do with that girl later lol. Then, the movie came on, and I forgot she was even there... What got me was the incredible soundtrack; the main theme was an ethereal experience that I'll never forget. It stuck with me for years and years, and I would try playing those 4 chords on every instrument I had. With Way of Water, I was SUPER excited because I thought we'd get music on that level. Unfortunately, it didn't happen, and that's why I just felt the first movie more (even though the second has a much better story imo).

29:00 Yeah I never understood giving nearly every bipedal alien in science fiction nipples. Let's pretend Mars has life; do y'all think the species there would be *precisely* the same as the species here?
