Charoen Chai Community (ชุมชนเจริญไชย เยาราช), Bangkok, Thailand.
I’ve known Michael from Bangkok Vanguards (bangkokvanguards.com/) for a number of years, and he’s a great guy. So we met up to hang out, eat, and explore and talk about a little more serious subject - the endangered Charoen Chai Community (ชุมชนเจริญไชย เยาราช) in Bangkok’s Yaowarat, Chinatown.
Before exploring the neighborhood though, we stopped of course to eat some nearby Thai street food.
Jay Eng (ร้านเจ๊เอ็ง) - Kuay teow lawd boran (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวหลอดโบราณ) is what this famous street sells. It’s an ok dish, not my absolute favorite, but it’s not a common dish to find in Bangkok either - this old type of style - it’s well worth trying out. Their fried fish cakes (ทอดมันปลา) are awesome.
Price - 35 THB ($1.07) per plate
Satay (สะเต๊ะ) - Next just down the road, and it actually has the same owner, we had some pretty fantastic satay. I especially enjoyed the liver.
Total price - 220 THB ($6.74)
Charoen Chai Community (ชุมชนเจริญไชย เยาราช) - What we really came to explore was Bangkok’s Charoen Chai Community (ชุมชนเจริญไชย เยาราช). This community is threatened by development. Now, Michael and I both know how development is a good and necessary part of any city, however it’s also good to preserve amazing living pieces of history. This community is one of the last Thai Chinese communities in Bangkok that has remained almost the same for a hundred years.
Khao Tom Jay Suay (ข้าวต้มเจ๊สวย) - For dinner we headed to one of the best Thai Chinese street food restaurant right across the street from the community - right next to the community. It had been a few years since I’d eaten there and the food was as good as I had remembered.
Asian date mussels (หอยกะพงผัดต้นหอม)
Stink beans with shrimp (ผัดเผ็ดสะตอกุ้ง)
Daylilies with crispy pork (ผัดดอกไม้จีนสดหมูกรอบ)
Silver barb, pickled mustard greens (ปลาตะเพียบต้มเกี่ยมฉ่าย)
Soup with pickled plum (แกงจืดบ๋วยหมูสับ)
Total price - 450 THB ($13.78)
Big thanks to Michael for hanging out and walking around! He offers some very unique and off the beaten path tours of Bangkok which you can check out here: bangkokvanguards.com/
Thank you for watching this Thai Chinese food tour of Charoen Chai Community (ชุมชนเจริญไชย เยาราช)!

Thank you for watching! You can check out Michael here: bangkokvanguards.com/ Also, one of my goals this year is to film more videos that not only show delicious food, but also highlight meaningful stories like this, and people who are making a difference. If you have any specific ideas or recommendations anywhere in the world, I'd be happy to hear from you!

Mark, I love that you always educate us about the culture and the people wherever you travel to. I always love listening to the stories of the people and the stories behind the food. I can tell that you enjoy doing what you do and that's awesome! I thoroughly enjoyed this video! Thank you, Ying, and Micah for always being so great! We appreciate all the hard work! Thanks to Michael too for speaking about these places that are at risk for losing such amazing culture because of development!

Not only does the food blow me away and I can’t wait to taste it all. But more importantly the Thai people are just so welcoming, giving, and compassionate about their food and customers ( picking up your table and it’s entirety and moving it across the street because it’s starting to rain) I can’t wait to make Thailand home. 💜🙏

YAY! So great to see the Ying we have grown to know and love over the years back again, so outgoing, fun-loving, and full of energy. Micah is so lovable but in many past videos Ying looks so tired and almost PPD'd when carrying him around. Great that grandma gave Ying a break, she is so vivacious today.

It's great seeing how much everyone enjoys being a small part of your videos. I like this sort of "social" video. It's always wonderful when people do things to make a difference. Also, sometimes tourist areas kind of threaten the original authenticity of countries. I guess it's hard to find the right balance.

And I thought the whole time that Michael's english has an familiar accent to it...and as he began to speak german it became oh so clear why... I always had a vague suspicion that Mark could've had german speaking ancestors, because Wien (in German) or Vienna (in English) is the capital of Austria. ...greetings from Berlin in Germany by the way. P.S. If Mark hasn't already the nickname "Chilli" I would suggest it, because it would fit him so well. Mark "Chilli" Wiens...

I discovered your channel several days ago, watched several of your videos and subscribed a few days later. It's my first time seeing you not give a completely positive compliment about a particular dish. I must say that your description of it was great. You understand that because you don't particularly like it, it doesn't mean that someone else won't. So, it's not your favourite. It might be someone elses. You didn't go out of your way to insult the cook. It's your personal experience of the food. You said what you had to say about it and moved on to the others. Great job on your videos. You make me hungry watching though... lol.

The whole time when Michael was talking I was like "I somehow know this kind of English accent". Then the German thing and it finally made sense! :'D

omg! I cant help myself to LOL when I see Mark's trademark emotion of enjoyment of yummy food! You know what? I have a goal too: to follow Mark's videos as my journey! I noticed that Mark video himself as well as well as taping the streets and the food, it is not easy to handle all though, great job! awesome! keep going! love your videos, love the way you serious about food and the details! keep going, Mark! 👍

Very nice to meet you Michael! How great it would be to be able to eat and explore with Mark. :) Thank you Michael for explanation on some interesting stuff! So sad, I do hope some how, China Town there will be saved, and the building will stop. For these people, this is their lives, I can't imagine how they must feel. I pray it's saved! Thank you Mark for another great vid', and an important one at that. xo
