I'm a Thai but I wasn't born and raised here. So I have a western upbringing I had a Thai girlfriend for 8 years here all of a sudden she told me she can't talk to me anymore. And my family had to talk to her family. Another guy and his family paid more dowry and so I was tossed aside awesome experience.

I believe a better door will open for you, she wasn't interested in you from the beginning, she was only using you and you were an option until the "money man" came along. Forget about her, you do not worth the trash.... Remember, true love doesn't have a price tag.

99.9999% of women are like this. If you want loyalty, get a dog (or several because they are awesome), women are generally only good for one thing, taking money for the occasional bit of fun. not worth marrying them.

Thank you for this video. I am an American engaged to a beautiful Thai woman 39 years old with no kids and never married (I am 44). I have met her family and we took vacation together. We have a good relationship. We have been together for 2 years and I told everyone that am not rich, but I have a good job and her family does not have much money so I offer to pay dowry. 100,000 baht is ok for me because I can pay it and she is a good woman that loves me very much. So dowry is for helping my new family.

This video is very educational and offers a deep insight into Thai marriage traditions. It was interesting to learn about the Thai tradition of Sin Sod or dowry, and how it is perceived not as buying a wife but as a way to prove the groom's ability to provide for the bride. This is an aspect of Thai culture that I hadn't understood before, and it was fascinating to see how deeply it is ingrained. The video also touched upon sensitive issues like virginity and prior marriages, and how these factors could influence the Sin Sod. Understanding these aspects of Thai culture helps foreigners approach such situations with better preparation and respect for local traditions. Overall, this video is very informative for anyone planning to marry in Thailand, especially foreigners. It not only educates about the Sin Sod tradition but also about the socio-cultural intricacies that could influence it. It emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting these traditions while navigating one's personal journey.

Her family never asked for dowry. She explained a dowry was not necessary. Before marriage, I asked what she/they wanted. One child. Perhaps, an income producing property (not urban). Ok. I arranged for her to purchase a property in her name. She and her mother chose the property a neighbor was selling. They planted rubber and some fruit with the idea of tapping or, later, selling the timber (stumpage) for a large “balloon” (child’s university education). My idea being to satisfy wife/family and future child. And satisfy my needs as I age and require retirement/shelter. She built a house on the land......lovely land. Close to her parents. Seventeen years later, we rarely use the house. We live in another province. Her parents regularly use the house and maintain the property and plantation. This “investment” has helped her parents and family.....in many ways. The stumpage “balloon” will be worth one million+.. We are now divorced. Share the home we built and gifted to our child in the other province. The child and his mother are well provided. I have a roof over my head. The two properties increase in value. They produce cash flow and modest income. The assets/Chanotes are in the name of our child. He pays the property taxes. His mother continues work to support herself and provides parenting. We avoided some pitfalls; cash dowry and gifting. A lot of work......absolutely worth the effort. Never had a visa associated with work or marriage. Always, just me and the Thai system. Hopefully, this comment will give a broader view. Also, my first public media comment. Keep well.

Interesting video. You correct some of the misinformation but there are some issues regarding Sin Sod that make foreigners skeptical. For example. I was in Thailand in February/March of 2020. I did the tourism areas but also some eastern provinces. A great experience meeting and seeing first hand village life. Spent some time in village areas and was invited to a Thai wedding. A 46 year old Thai woman was marrying a German man. She was once married to a Thai man and had children with him. Then she married a German man. Then another marriage to another German man. This was her 3rd marriage and second to a foreigner. Several of her friends were also married to German men. The dowry was 700,000 Thai baht. She had no job and lived in the family home. The dowry money was placed out for all to see. Ironically, her parents had the nicest house in the village. I wonder why? lol. That does not sit well with many foreigners. Also, regarding the idea that foreigners are charged more than Thai men because they marry Thai women so quickly and do not know the family well.....it is most often the Thai women who bring up marriage and soon after dating. I would not marry no matter the country but that is me. But a good video with lots of information for foreign men to consider.

ya the dowry should be 0 in that case. IF he wants to put 300,000 baht in cash out there to save face for the idiots who care about that stuff, then fine, but he should then put that money in his car. I suppose it's possible that happened at the wedding you went to, you wouldn't know if he took the money back. It's more common than people think.

I never paid a dowery for my Thai wife. She sent some of her earnings home to her family monthly and we paid $1000usd to creamate her mother, her fathers brother paid for the fathers final expenses. We inheirited the house and farm after buying out the siblings for B10,000 each. The old customs are dying off in Thailand except in rural areas between Thais. Parents are expected to be supported in old age, thats why they had so many children, because there is no pension and the govt pays the elderly not enough to eat.

She's 50yr old. She shouldn't be asking for a dowry as she was most likely married before or multiple times. What I would do in this case, I would say ok I put out the money for the wedding for the ceremony in Thailand, but that's it. The money is to show her friends and family that you can take care of her. (the losing face thing) But make it clear that money must return to you after the ceremony, (next day) and you don't tell anyone about that because you and her might lose face...

One important thing that you should keep in mind when discussing Thai dowry is that its amount is based on your Thai fiancee’s status, education, occupation and other related social background information (such as her virginity). An average middle-class, university-educated Thai lady deserves a dowry of 100,000- 300,000 baht. A dowry of a million baht for an uneducated lady of modest means is just ridiculous. Thai dowry prices fall drastically if your bride-to-be has been previously married, already has children, or is not a virgin anymore. In fact in most of these instances, no dowry deserves to be paid. Thai dowry, however, is usually symbolic in nature and will normally be returned to the married couple after the wedding, so as to help them start on their new life.

Negotiations of the "worth" of a human being, specifically someone you care about and find worth marrying and invest years in is a rather alien and uncomfortable concept for many of us non-natives. Even more so if she happens to be of the damaged goods variety, with little to no "deserving worth" Should just be circumvented all together. Offer to pay for the wedding expenses with a sum roughly equal to what the average wedding would cost back home (in my country about 700. 000 bath) and call it a day. If an Issan rice farming family wishes to call it a dowry and put the money on display during the wedding for photoshoot and bragging purposes, it's up to them.

The lady I have been video chatting with for 6 months is the same age as me although she looks like she's 30 tops and very beautiful although that's not that important to me just a major bonus! She owns her own business as a seamstress and works 7 days a week and even on holidays making apparel. She owns her own home and vehicle etc. and has a son in college and a daughter that has her own career so she lives alone. Just like me she doesn't have parents because they have passed away so she has a sister that kind of took over the role of looking out for her and helping her out she actually helped her get her business going and things like that. And briefly in passing I asked her about the dowry and she said that if we were to get married I would pay dowry to her sister and by her a wedding ring of course but also a bracelet or necklace which is customary here anyways. I asked her how much I should pay the sister and she said it was up to me. I'm not rich and I told her I would give her a fixed amount for my share of the bills she has which includes my rent and utilities and Wi-Fi etc. $600 a month which is very reasonable I also said I would pitch in $125 a month to get her some help at work so she can take time off for us to be together and do some adventure traveling around Thailand and other countries. How much should I give her sister without insulting anyone or making myself look bad? This is all hypothetical still of course until I get there and move in with her and see if things work out first. Any opinion would be appreciated, Thanks,✌️😎

It is the culture but many don’t follow anymore. I married a foreign man and did not ask for dowry. My parents would love to have the dowry but I did not agree. We have been married for over 15 years. It’s a Thai culture that you always have to support the parents, We help my parents when their hospital bills, take them on holidays. I am sending money to my mom every month at reasonable amount. some Thai family can asking for so much such as new house, new car, supporting siblings etc., for me these are beyond reasonable. It is a burden for Thai daughters (lower middle class to middle class) to always feel the need to serve their parents, husband needs to understand this pressure and both have to be reasonable on this issue. Thai daughter needs to set a boundary with the parents. กตัญญูแบบมีสติ

My girlfriend, who works at a hospital in Bangkok, is from Isaan. She has a 13 year-old son being raised by her Mom back in the village. Her Dad died 15 years ago. Her Mom is a subsistence rice farmer. My girlfriend sends her 10,000 baht a month to support both her and her son. This is critical support and her Mom and son would be in deep trouble without it. Her Mom has asked for a 200,000 baht sin sod. I understand I don't have to pay her anything. But I'm happy to pay because she is so hard up, and it is a deeply-ingrained tradition in Isaan. It's a rounding error to me, but would make a huge difference in her Mom's life. Plus it will keep the peace between my girlfriend and her Mom. So I'll go along.

If you can’t stand criticism, marry a virgin. Never take on a former married girl unless she has no children. The balance of trying to raise someone else’s kids is a hard task, especially when you take them back to your country. Think really carefully on this aspect. This video is an excellent guide, don’t be fooled by speculation or rumour. If you choose to marry a bar girl, well good luck with that. Always remember, you are the Customer, they are the Service Provider, and that’s how it always will be until you get divorced, and you will soon see how stupid you may have been. The costs of marrying a Thai girl is a lot more expensive than you ever imagined. If you get a good one, well you can often be one of many who enjoys a great relationship. It’s like a cattle market, choose wisely, and do your homework. Always remember the famous Wall Street one liner.......Money Never Sleeps.

It's a fair point i like to bring up. The Father of the bride is our custom, the dowry is theirs. Why should it only be about her custom and not yours? This is at least decent leverage to negotiate to something your'e comfortable with, since they will absolutely never pay for a single beer at the wedding, let alone the entire thing.

Local Thai low middle end hotel/apartment service manager in Bangkok paid 90k baht 10+ years ago. Not sure if she was from the city or province but definitely poorer family. He was happy as a samboy. No idea if they gifted it back to them. I think the tradition is likely dead in Bangkok itself but probably not in the poorer provinces anyway. The smart families will probably see the benefits of their daughter marrying a foriegner but at the same time you have to remember that in the medium term until she gets a working visa overaeas they will lose her income i.e. the money she usually sends home to share with the family so you get the picture. Thais are generally pretty nice and not manifestly greedy though bangkok girls can definitely be a different breed like the mainland Chinese. So if money comes up early forget it but i guess when you are planning the wedding its appropriate to discuss it IMHO. Hope that helps from a farang who knows and loves Thailand and has learnt alot even without learning Thai. Kapkuhncup. PS if they work in the bar trade then they are kind of soiled by the monied objectification. Often but definitely definitely not always. There are no hard and fast rules im afraid. Just take it very very slowly be compassionate and generous and dont be a sucker: there is plenty of exploitation on both sides: welcome to the wonderful world of capitalism! As for my credentials: i holidayed in thailand for around a month every year for more than a decade and got to know the people and the culture very well indeed. I still miss and love it like a second home. The Buddhist and gracious elements of the culture and the people are exceptionally alluring indeed.

That video is correct in all aspects from what I have learned from Thai people on my travels. Best bet is to find a lady who has been married and has a child. Over 28 helps too. By their standards, a lady like that isn't as desirable and their time is running out. Other option is to marry a lady from a family that does well. Sin Sod in that situation is just for "show" at ceremonies and will be returned but expect to put up gold and currency in the same amount her friends have in the past to "save face" of the family status. Sin Sod can be negotiated but carefully. Either way, expect to help the parents as they get old. Don't meet the parents too soon after meeting her as they will think you have intentions of marrying them. Best to keep it as "friends". What will be will be anyway. If she is older with children, she will know her limitation and values and will stay with you if not married so why take a chance with marriage anyway? Treat her like a wife and be good to her and she will be good to you without the drama that happens with marriage with SOME Thai woman. No matter what culture, woman really only want money as it ensures security for the future.

@@dagonming1319 I replied but it is not showing up, my first trip to Thailand was in 1985. If your friends could read then they would have known the pitfalls that can happen. The Bangkok post every so often carries the lament of stupid farang with buyers remorse. If the woman is a virgin you might pay a dowry but you more likely to find a virgin in a night club at 3am in the UK on a Friday night than one in Thailand, unless you a child preditor. Otherwise you don't pay a penny up front. As for buying them a house you set up a private limited company and get voting rights signed over to you of the 51% Thai ownership. Ways and means, basically don't rush in and be stupid not knowing the culture. It is easy to take money off stupid people.

It is not the money. It is the commitment and the security that the man can provide to the Thai wife. If a person knows the Thai girl well enough and develop the confidence in her, then I am sure there is a amicable solution for this. I have know Thai girls who have married to foreigners even without a single payment of dowry. And in some cases even the Thai girls family display the money as if it is from the groom to safeguard their social value. It is all about the face value among the families and relatives that is very high in Thai culture.

I paid monthly $150 with the proviso that IF the economy collapses I'd need to suspend payments. In late 2009 after the economy collapsed, we suspended payments for a few months. I'm happy to help my wife's family and she is held in high esteem. I talked about it (negotiated) ahead of time without pressure from her wonderful family. I've paid bigger chunks to help the family but I volunteered and was never pressured by my wife. I paid for her Thai lawyer and made a prenup with a US attorney in Thailand- not expensive when compared to US legal fees. If you marry a woman with a degree who has never had a serious relationship you'll be expected to pay more. Weird but TIT. It does happen that foreigners marry wealthy Thai women and that costs even more or they may return the cash after a "money show", mai pen rai to them. We had a village ceremony which was priceless. Then had a formal governmental procedural wedding to legally formalize it for her visa. I'm happy to support my wife but she wanted to work after a while and did so. Since COVID she stopped working and I still work and pay her mom $150/mo with pride. It has been the best decision I've ever made, life is wonderful. We have never argued one time in 14 years of marriage. Her family is now my family.

Im in a complicated situation actually. I never paid dowry and we are still staying as boyfriend-girlfriend and have done so for 4 years already. She is a previously married muslim woman. So if i would marry, not only would i have to possibly pay the dowry, i would also have to convert to islam and get circumcised. I don't really feel like doing that and that is why we are staying in this limbo situation. I guess i want to do what is right, but on the other hand i don't want to change to a religion i don't belive in, so yeah, difficult. I love this woman, and she loves me and we are thinking maybe we will just eventually get married by law in my country and forget the whole religion thing. Im also indirectly supporting her mother right now. I give her about $300 besides from what she gets in student benefits and student loans when she's studdying here. Half of that goes to her mother and and the rest goes to pay her house loan. That is im paying down the mortgage on a house i don't even own, so maybe it's enough.

Khop Khun Khrap! First, I'd like to thank you for your nice video and the comments you've made. I moved to Thailand 20 years ago and started teaching in 2005. I married a woman because we loved each other and I know that countless men marry a bargirl without knowing much about Thai culture and I might never understand why so many foreigners, mostly from the UK, or the US can't even order a noodle soup in Thai after many years of living here. I did have relationships with ladies who worked in bars, but it's as the old saying goes. You can get a girl out of a bar, but not the bar out of the girl. I respect all Thai people and truly understand that a lot of human trash is coming to your country in form of criminals, pedophiles, and other weirdoes. Unfortunately, do many Thai people not have the chance to get a decent education which should be free for all, no matter if they come from a poor farmer background or those with kids who won't get a Thai man. When I arrived in Thailand 20 years ago all people were very friendly to me and most were happy to talk to me. Sadly, too many bad foreigners give all of us a bad name and the majority of Thai people might believe that we are all uneducated and poor fools. I love my job helping Thai children to become very good at English and subjects in English by trying to develop their critical thinking skills. Thanks a lot for your videos, I hope that you can live of fit one day and live a happy life without any health, or other problems. Kind regards from Sisaket. Mike

Since I retired I have not had to transfer any money from England but use my visa card for fuel, phone bill and restaurants, all the excess money she earns is deposited into my bank in Thailand so my a/c looks good for the visa requirements. When I brought up the subject of Sin Sod, she said ' why, both my parents are dead?'. In today's Korea, the tradition of Shin-Sot has disappeared. It remains history. It can also be seen occasionally in dramas. Thai people say it's a tradition, but it's just a culture. Culture changes. The present Korea has changed about twice. There was a time when the men prepared the house, home appliances, and home appliances, and the women just came home. Now we are pursuing an egalitarian society. Man is home. The woman prepared home appliances and furniture. Currently, most of the house and home appliances are 50:50. or a mixture of them, decided by consensus. Parents add money to their decisions.

I paid $50 in Indonesia the first time I got married there and they gave it right back to me. I don't think there was a dowry the second time.

From first hand experience, being married to a Thai and living in Thailand on a marriage visa, you still cannot work without a work permit. Hefty fines and the risk of deportment apply. Also, I can never own land or a home in just my name alone. The only exceptions I am aware of are through a Thai company (again it’s not yours), jointly (still wish-washy), a US citizen and limited to ~1 Rai (or possibly smaller) but that’s related to an agreement made between Thailand and the USA after the war. The only other way I’m aware of is if you buy into a condominium, but there too are rules and conditions to be met such as more than 50% of the apartments must be owned by Thais.

Context: 1) how many guys working some kind of small biz with the thai wife or employee being the face of the company get deported? I've never heard of it happening once. I have heard of people having to pay some tea money, but that usually amounts to a low amount of money and it's also rare. 2) Why do you need to own land or a home? Rentals are so cheap; property values don't go up significantly anyway. And you can also do a 30 year lease from your wife to have some added leverage. Totally legal, though they'll make you pay 1.5% of the entire 30 year lease amount up front. 3) Who cares about the condo 50% rule, people would only look at foreigner owner condo's, the rest don't matter. Still an over supply anyway.

Hooe they simplify process...thai marriage visa doesn't grant any permission to stay in thailandmThis itself will be an great difficulty for expat relationship.. Expats still needs to be having work permit as additional requirements.

I'm afraid of getting scammed, could you tell me when exactly you are supposed to hand over the dowry in this process? is it after the wedding, before? when and at what stage. Thanks.

Before the wedding. Her parents would be happy if there's a dowry right away.

Marriages in any country are typically an important affair and and often encompass the historical traditions of that country. Everyone negotiates the content of their marriage ceremony. How big. How much the are going to spend. What traditions they choose to observe. Thailand is no different. If you and your fiancé and the families involved can’t agree on the terms of the wedding ceremony them you can always walk away. I married my Thai wife in her family home in a poor Isaan farming village. I paid a sin sod. I was fine with the amount asked for. Two months ago my wife’s cousin was married to a young Thai man in the same house. They are young and poor (as was I for my first marriage in the US) and the young man also paid a sin sod. Their’s was a lower budget wedding but was essentially the same as mine. He paid half the sin sod I paid. In both mine and this young couple’s wedding the sin sod was not returned. I can also report that the presentation of the sin sod was a serious and important part of the two hour ceremony. My advice is to not think about the sin sod separate from the whole wedding. Just focus on the total cost of the wedding which, like weddings in any country, involve costs associated with the venue, photography, wedding clothes, food, music, etc. Part of the cost of my wedding was for two whole pigs that were butchered and given to people that attended the wedding. It is very likely that the total cost of the wedding, including sin sod, will be less than the equivalent ceremony in your home country. There are a lot of opinions about what sin sod means in the context of the people and families involved. There is a lot of talk about what is an appropriate amount to offer as a sin sod. Forget all of that. Think about what wedding do you and your fiancé want. What can you, the both of you, afford? I’ve been married in the US and Thailand. Yes, Thailand is a different culture but the wedding decisions, if you consider the big picture, were the same for both weddings.

But what about your customs? In the West, it's customary for the Father of the bride to pay for the wedding. Why is it that only her traditions are honored, but you don't want to talk about your customs? lol. Some amount is fine, and the guy who made the video was right on with the 100,000, which is probably the right amount in most cases just to save face and avoid issues.

@@luxuryseaviewvillas6744 If you are a westerner getting married to a Thai in Thailand then you are always welcome to discuss your own traditions. You and your fiancé are partners and everything is negotiable. I met a Canadian man who married a Thai and they had two big weddings in Bangkok hotels. One was a traditional western wedding. The other was a traditional Thai wedding. Personally I consider the traditions of the host country to take precedence but, as I said, everything is negotiable here as it is anywhere.

Best advice after spending 10 years in mainland China. (this cant be applied to other counties) Do your research! You are getting involved in another culture. And most of the time I have seen it end up badly. Marry a farmer girl get a farmer girl. (That has a deeper meaning than you might think it does.)

Not really true. We got married and put in the dowry which her parents gave back to us. Nowadays, it's just following the culture for show at your wedding to show you have to good start at being a couple. Maybe if you marry a poor family and most probably they'll keep the money.

@@jamestan1108 Yes of course the poor will keep the money! Most Farangs that marry here in Thailand are with a girl from came from nothing. I lived here for almost 20 yrs and been to a dozen weddings and the Farang paid a sinsod and didn't get it back. Lucky you that you got a woman from a more fortunate background!

I’m 35 and plan on marrying a Thai girl who is 27 we have been together 6 years. I’m Australian and have a decent job and am middle class in Australia.. her family is from Isaan and live very basic style with low income. My girlfriend is government school teacher who went through university to achieve this job and is what I’d call a good girl had only one previous relationship to a Thai guy in high school.. how much would be a fair amount to pay sinsod and gold I’d also be paying for the wedding and also will be giving a western style engagement ring.
