Chai meter Mai khap is the first words I say when getting a taxi in Bangkok. However 99.9% of Bkk taxi drivers have their meters on, unless you are in lower Sukhimvit late at night or in the early hours of the morning. Getting taxi drivers to use their meters is more of an issue outside of Bkk.

I rarely met a Taxi in Bangkok, that really used the meter. One driver even drove me back to our pick up point, when I insisted on using it.

It feels a bit unfriendly to ask for the meter straight away, suspecting the driver of fraud. I presume the meter to be used, and almost always it is. But good to know the right words.
