My wife is from a small village in Mae Hong Son and is part of the Karen tribe (not that “Karen!” 😜). Our house is in the city of Lamphun but that doesn’t prevent us from driving the several hours to get there for family, fun, food and rich culture. Mae Hong Son is a beautiful province with so much variety for possible adventures. I feel so lucky to live in this beautiful country and I appreciate Mark’s take on it. He presents it well.

🙏 wow that brings back memories of my second trip to Thailand 🇹🇭 1990 I hired a mtx 125cc in Chiang Mai and did a ten day loop. Up to Pai and the along the Myanmar border back to Chiang mai. Stopping along the way. I stumbled across this cave by chance as it was not a tourist attraction at the time. A young boy showed me around the cave wading chest deep through the river and chambering up the side to see the wooden coffins. Then we sat and waited for the bats to fly out. There wasn't anyone else around. Things have certainly changed... Thanks for the memories rekindled. 🥰💞 🇹🇭 🙏

Love that place! Been there a few times, we go right through Pai (sorry; it's a bit too much of a tourist trap now,) right to the village of Baan Mapa and stay at the Cave Lodge. Cave Lodge has tours of other caves in the area too and has great food + nice, little cabins right on the same stream that flows through Tam Lod. We've seen the bats flying out (+ thousands of Starlings flying IN at the same time!) at dusk. Just a great place all around.

Used to visit there a lot when we lived in Chiang Mai in the late 90's. Brilliant place and, as Mark said, the money you spend on guides and rafts goes to the community. The bats and starlings at sunset are other worldly. Well worth a visit.

Before the bats leave for the night, 100's of thousands of swallows come into the cave to nest for the night. At one point you have clouds of swallows coming in at the same time clouds of bats are coming out. It is utterly amazing and a sight I will never forget. I rode the Mae Hong Song loop on a motorcycle in 1995. Pai was still a sleepy single street town that basically shut down at night. No night market, only a single restaurant with a bar open at night.

Thank you for the great tour with out having to be there in person. If my kids went I think they would of ran off with the foul smell of the bat poop 💩 . I miss Thailand want to go back again. Only been able to go there one once as a family and it was one of those tours, but it was good not the food though. When we could be on our own we would love to go in to 7 eleven or family mart to get food. Would love to go back again.

Mark, its cool to see you doing things other than just eating. You mispronounced stalactite, and by the way stalactites hang from the ceilings of caves and stalagmites grow up. Since you're now doing tours of unique geological features like caves and in other videos, pronouncing scientific names of plants, I suggest watching a few videos about geology and botany on KZbin, maybe while you're in the car driving between the different places where you film your videos. Also, it's funny you could smell the bat poop through your Covid face mask. Be careful around bats, you could catch sars-cov-3 or some other new virus.

Got the stalactites and stalagmites switched. The way I remember it is that stalagMITES *might* reach the top of the cave and stalacTITES cling *tight* to the ceiling. Caves are super cool, I love getting to see them.
