Frozen bank accounts - had a similar experience, but not in such dire circumstances of having run out of cash. ATM said declined, so there I am on the phone to my bank in the UK at god knows how many £'s per minute. The irony was that whilst waiting for an operator to become free, part of the message being played in my ear was 'you do not need to inform us if you are travelling abroad...'. You can imagine my response to the operator. I also pointed out to them the irony of their message, the fact that days earlier I had bought an international flight, and currency, all of which was easily visible on the account. Block removed, and holiday continued as normal. Always have spare cash in reserve. Not a difficult habit to practice.

Hi Peter, good stories with variety. I can attest to having arguments with a Thai girl i know, and they all say " relax " when you get annoyed with them, and trying to reason with with our western type of logic, especially when they write something on soical media ans then do somethung completely contrary to what they write. There is almost no way to get them to explain and try to reconcile their comments or actions. The more you harp on the matter, they simply respond: " why do you want to fight-talk? " It is simply near impossible to win an argument with them...

Final story- had a similar decline at an atm. I had already put in the travel advisory i was going to thailand. When i called the bank, they told me told me ' its not normal to make 3 withdrawals in 1 day'. Was having a good night . Notify, but limit withdrawals to only 2 per day.

4th story so true you must tell the bank your in Thailand. I had it happen to me . Normally I have the cash but on occassion you do need to do online banking and if they dont know they will shut your account . Good policy I think

I’ve noticed in the last few years, most of my US banks advised I no longer need to notify them. However there is still the foreign daily withdrawal limit I forgot about when last in Vietnam. It may or may not be lower than you local limit. Interesting set of stories. Such generous men 😅

Hi Pete, great stories again thank you. On the third story with the 60 year old gentleman and the 20 year old lady, I found it a bit odd that he wasn't allowed in her house because they weren't married. I have never experienced that in Thailand and how would the parents ever meet with guests?

I guess it depends on the family. When I met my wife I did visit the family house but I was not allowed to be alone with her until we married. However we did stay in hotels and resorts together and nothing was ever said about that.

1st story . I totally sympathise with the guy. My wife is from rural Isaan but we have a deal. I do the temple and family thing which I am more than happy to do. But I get my 2 or 3 day pass to go and stay in the city and enjoy myself no questions asked. Yes my wife is very protective but its give and take. I respect my Thai family and do what I need to as a good husband . But I also get my fun pass so I am very happy

In respect of story 1, being married to a Thai lady - that’s the norm when returning back to the village. Luckily my wife likes travelling and we normally get a few visits to the City or places like Bangkok, Pattaya or Phuket when back in Thailand. But I do like returning back to the quiet village after these trips. But agree on how jealous Thai girls can get.

I live in south korea. When i went back to the UK the same thing happened tk me. My card was declined when I tried to use because i didnt tell them i was going to the UK. A short phone call fixed it.

He be sitting beside you in a bar in the future looking to tell you how he got ripped off by some Thai girl and looking for sympathy I know one thing I won’t be listening 😂. As from the notifying the bank about your travels overseas, I know you must notify Australian banks that you are going overseas and which countries you be visiting so they keep your account open. I always let my bank know I'm going to Thailand. I doesn't hurt to let them know so that they don't shut down your account. The teller in the bank reckons that it can happen if you don't let them know.
