Reality is there are no "friends", unless they think they can gain something from you. I don't care where you are in the world, it's like that in most cases, maybe not all, but MOST. Fair weather friends are a dime a dozen.

@@reoun1654 I feel you. I'm Scottish but been living in SEA for almost 30 years now, moved to Hong Kong in 1995 in my mid 20"s. I planned to stay for 2 years like a lot of people but I'm still here. I find in HK there's a lot fewer of the Walter Mitty braggart types, and when I worked in our Taipei office and also in KL I found it pretty normal too, but Thailand and the Phillpines in particular seem to attract a whole different category of people for some reason. In the main I tend to avoid these types like the plague but if I do run into difficulties at least I have my black belt in Jujutsu and my time as Steven Segal's stunt double to fall back on 😉

The fact is that most foreigners that move to and reside in the Philippines are mostly down-and-outs with little financial means and with that you often get desperation, mental stress, alcoholism, poor decision making and bad behavior. When you ask most of them why they moved there the main reasons cited are: cheap living costs, cheap visas, cheap beer, cheap women....notice the trend, Cheap Charlies. Many of these types are also reside in Pattaya...and once Pattaya becomes too spendy (usually visa issue or the cost of women and beer) they move to the Philippines or Cambodia.

I am 67 and no way am I going to interact socially with a close neighbor, anywhere, beyond "hello how are you today" level chit-chat, more-or-less. I value tranquility at home and the least amount of drama possible. There are 6B other people to befriend if you want company. Once you learned he lied about being the author of the boxing book why was that not enough for you? If you think a 4x4 with screws sticking out and used as a club swung at your head is incapable of killing you or causing a life-threatening/altering brain injury, you are daft. Risking your safety over a couple of weeks of rent at Filipino rates is as dumb as resisting an armed thief trying to steal something of relatively little value that can be replaced (i.e. wallet, vehicle ect) from you. Simon apparently has not suffered enough serious accidents in his life. Had he perhaps he would be a bit wiser. Or perhaps he simply is a reckless risk-taker over absurd matters.

very good point Pete, about the limited choice of friends when we are abroad. I have done the same thing, probably chosen people to befriend that I wouldn't befriend at home. Most of us don't want to be alone all the time, and we fall into this trap. We live and learn :)

When things in real life are happening, which contradicts his illusions, he becomes aggressive. Whatever this is called the only thing you should know is to stay far away because its a time bomb.

I already said on simons channel i think alcohol was a big part of the story. Im not a bar man myself but as we all know you have to be careful who you get involved with especially drinking in bars. I have a couple of family members that can become aggressive when drinking my own brother he isn't aggressive but he can be cheeky when he is drinking i won't answer my phone to him if i know he has been drinking. Alcohol doesn't effect everyone the same also it depends on how much and how often your drinking.

In the last interview with Simon, he spoke of frequenting the typical tourist drinking holes and mixing with some really dodgy expat characters. With that being said Simon clearly knows that south east Asia does attract alot of seedy dodgy characters that typically frequent the expat bars. On some level it might seem that he attracts this unnecessary drama. It would have been interesting Pete if you had put this to him…. I get it that Simon is really friendly but this sort of thing is so avoidable.

Always two sides to a story, so they say 🤔 I’m an expat and aware of bar stool warriors etc. I’ve met some guy’s from all over the world but, when the drink kicks in there’s more and more shit. I was talking to an American guy once in a bar whilst waiting for my wife to finish work. He was from Texas, yeah working for oil company, we got steaming. Fucking great afternoon. Bar stool warriors kept looking at us from afternoon, until evening. That boring pub, the Robin Hood at Phrom Phong.
