With elections looming in Southern Rhodesia, a small monitoring force based in the country are there to try and ensure that the elections are free and fair, as those elected will form the Government of a newly independent Zimbabwe.

Pres Mugabe's response was both empathic and candid as he said "if Bishop were to win, then the Devil can win the election in Heaven", I have never heard of anything before or since

Whatever good intentions Mugabe might have had at the beginning of his rule in Zimbabwe (and trying to be fair - which isn't easy - he did have some good things going on in the beginning, but those quickly faded), in the end he let everyone down - he let them down bad.

As for Gukurahundi, we have to understand that many of the people in ZANU and government in the 80s had fought a brutal war for nearly 15 years. Gukurahundi was a tragedy caused by traumatized war veterans getting paranoid. As much as Mugabe was leader, he didn't have complete control until he became executive president in 1987.
