Dragons' Den

3 жыл бұрын

French entrepreneur Sylvain Preumont is next to enter The Den. He's pitching the 'ultimate selfie' product, personalised statues made using 3D-printing technology. Sylvain is seeking an investment of £80,000 in return for a 15% equity stake but Peter thinks he can rival him...
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

It's not about whether someone has the cash, it's about the assets that determine the business valuation. If you buy a 100K machine and construct a business around selling whatever it actually does, and sell me 10% of that business for 50K, something is not adding up. Where did the extra 400K come from? This is what they mean. They could just buy the machine and own 100% of the business. If you don't have 70K at hand, you could easily get a loan if your business plan and your track record is rock solid. Either way, buying at 5 times fair value would never attract any half-sensible investor... "And for that reason, I'm out."

Good idea, but 1. You can't scan dead relatives - unless you dig em up, or scan them before you put them in the ground 2. Scanning actors to make figures etc. - You can already buy action figures for practically any movie, so you're competing with that market, and getting the rights to manipulate the actors and or characters in any way with any clothing combination etc. would be tricky (copyrights etc.) 3. How do you scan your relatives and friends without them knowing? And if they're in on it, who is buying the figure of them in the crazy outfit? Them, or you?

We did something extremely similar to that here in the US. It was huge around Steampunk conventions which is a really small market. After my wife cleaned up the image, we sent it to the printers. If you don't own the printer, you aren't making any money. We decided to cut our losses and turn our energies to something else.

Interesting statement of Sylvain towards the end. From what I can tell, his business(s) isn't doing so hot and he admitted in making some not good choices from his past in that business aspect. I really do not believe he saw this idea and project worthy, he just needed a loan and thought his idea of printing yourself in 3D was so grand he doesn't have to give them any reason to invest.

Peter is right. The variety of things you could make are almost endless so why have limitations when you have the skills? 🤔 swap that self model for a family model or one of them with their dog's or cat's or to commemorate something special like birthday, wedding, graduation, anniversary, new born etc etc More importantly he should learn the software instead of sticking with scan and print techniques, offer online services so people dont have to leave their homes for more simplified models. I do 3d printing myself but I would never limit my potential income by sticking to one small market.

I larp, and at one of our game nights there was a 3d scanning booth that made a lot of sales just that night. A lot of larpers would like a statuette of their character and are already comitted to dropping a lot of money on their pointless hobby. Granted, larp is a tiny market, but there are plenty of other more viable ones for such technology. the most obvious to me is parents who could get a life-size print of their baby, or weddings, who could get the bride and groom in a romantic scene. Also pets Also, the technology of scanning doesn't need to be used for printing. a lot of game devs can get models in costume scanned, and use the 3d file to port that character into their game. You can also just get the scan, buy the file, and print it yourself.

It's amazing to me the number of people who apply to come on the show, presumably having watched it and can't give even the most basic, essential figures on how to value their business. "Oh, that's a cool invention!" isn't the end of the discussion when deciding whether to invest or not. Also, there are a number of different ways to value a business, and granted there's always a degree of subjectivity to it, but let's take a common and simple one: 3 times EBIT, which we'll assume is the same as net earnings here. He said his net was around 15,000, 3 times of which is 45,000, nowhere near the 80,000 for 15% he was asking, which would value the business at 533,333, well over half a million pounds. Even if we throw in the entire value of the physical assets, a 70,000 3D printer and ignore depreciation (which we would never really do) it still doesn't get us anywhere close to what he's asking. Another insane valuation on a "cool invention".

@@TallulahLaGhash That's presumptuous again, to say it's mainly British people. However, that is more nitpicking on my part. I know of another YTer that actually releases their videos in the morning our time, that way Americans waking up, will see a new video, with views on it.
@TallulahLaGhash
@TallulahLaGhash 3 жыл бұрын
@@Locutus maybe presumptious, but it's commonsense that a KZbin channel run by the actual production company of national broadcasting corporation (ie the BBC) would not be putting out their content in a way that best suits the timezone that 1. Their staff work in and 2. Appeals mainly to a native audience who are familiar with that show? You will see that the Irish version has far less viewers, but those active on the daily comments section are typically people in Ireland who watched the show on their national TV. Of course every good show will broaden out to a global audience, but in my mind, the presumptuous thing here is the idea that the people running the channel are catering to Americans. It's a very American-centric presumption. Especially given the channel is very receptive to audience comments. It has to be. It is a branch off of the BBC, their content is regulated so they scrutinise their engagement. You can witness this in how they put more clickbait titles, until the comments complained. Then they would change them. Trust me they market to the lunchtime crew, just as the Irish one does, both putting out content at sameish time as they do see that's a popular thing within their fanbase.
@Locutus
@Locutus 3 жыл бұрын
@@TallulahLaGhash I don't believe this YT channel is actually run by the BBC, I think a separate company from BBC runs the channel. I could be wrong. I'm not claiming that the show is catering for Americans, I'm saying that *could* be *a* possibility, *a* possibility of many. But with it being released at lunchtime doesn't necessarily mean that are aiming for us Brits, specifically. They *may* be releasing it for another audience, that will see the views later and because it has views, people are more likely to watch the video.

All else aside, who WOULDN'T want a small statue of themselves? Their kids? Their parents? Maybe their pets? I find the notion that no one would want that to be insultingly absurd. TONS of people would absolutely LOVE it. For example, I would LOVE one of my now-deceased mom, and grandparents. I would LOVE to have had one of the younger versions of my now-grown children. And come on... because someone "could" purchase an expensive 3D printer and scanner setup this is a bad idea? Give me a damn break. You really think the average soccer mom is going to even consider the investment, time, learning curve, physical space, etc... required when all they want is an awesome statue of their 5-year son? Hell no. Using that dumb logic, no one would ever buy virtually any product ever. After all, I could just buy the machinery to make my own product X.
