So I went ahead and ordered the LS50 after watching so many positive reviews, hooked them up to my Onkyo TX-NR1030 AV receiver with a 3 ft gap between them and the back wall and sat on my sofa 9 ft away. Turned on the music and waited for the LS50 magic to hit me. Well ... they sounded good but I couldn't get that "wow" effect that others were talking about.I read about room acoustics and how it can impact the listening experience. So I did the logical thing as an engineer and attempted to "eliminate" the impact of room acoustics. Instead of listening to the LS50 across the room, I placed the speakers on my computer desktop on both sides of the monitor 1.5 ft away from me. Turned on the music, and my jaw dropped, it was a "wow" moment that just kept going and going. I am hearing the same songs again but now they are just breathtaking, almost magical expreience!!. the bass, vocals, treble, layering, imaging , resonance.... you have to experience it to know what I am talking about. just magical ! you don't need to add anything to your audio system besides the LS50. it has it all. (they are still connected to my Onkyo AV but with longer cable, not even the expensive ones :) I think this is the way to fully experience speakers, especially bookshelf design (up close and personal) unless you want to spend time and money on improving/fine-tuning room acoustics so you can push back the speakers while still maintaining their full acoustics (yes, it matters a lot ). for me, honestly, I am not going to bother. The joy of listening to KEF LS50 setting next to me on my desk is all what I hoped for and more than justify their cost. I just wanted to share my experience because now I truly believe that people will have different experiences when they listen to the same speakers depending on how they are set up and where they are in the room. just get close and personal and "hear" them. plain and simple (heck, every audiophile should consider this set up as an alternative to expensive audio rooms set up)
@donniealger78428 жыл бұрын
That's awesome! Thank you for sharing your experience. I've posted pictures of my room in audiophile forums before and everyone there seems to think that my room is horrible acoustically speaking. Before I bought my speakers they told me that they would not sound good in my room, I ended up buying them anyway and placed them on my desk, they sounded fantastic. However, I do wonder how much better they could of sounded with acoustical treatment. I just don't know where to start, what to buy and if it will actually make a big difference or if it's even worth it. I don't even know how to properly position my speakers, I tried many different angles but honestly it was really hard for me to tell a difference.
@mishalharbi7778 жыл бұрын
Actually, when you are 9 ft away, the speaker system is now the speaker+room. The direct sound of the speaker is muddied by the echos bouncing off the walls. This is not a loudness issue but quality of sound. getting closer to the speaker dramatically improve the sound quality a lot even if the room is not sound treated properly.

Oops, that comment was meant for another reply for M1060 review. not sure how it got here. my bad. nevertheless, no headphone, even the Monolith M1060 Magnetic planar with 10 cm driver get even close to the sound quality of the LS50 for music. for gaming etc, however, I do prefer quality headphones over speakers.

Thanks Tharbamar. Real good job. Keep up the with the listening reviews. Even with all the inevitable constrains of the demos (of course the sound we hear in our computer/tablet/headphones is very different from those captured with your equipment due to all the variables involved ), they allow us to fairly compare the peformance of the speakers. Another nice sounding feature is that the small LS50's have essentially an infinite baffle cabinet (well almost). No square edges anyhow and a loaded port so the sound is neutral and full range, the Uni-que driver is free of crossover hunting sound between drivers. Nice, and spendy - a little spendy.

@shrodingersman7 жыл бұрын
I've listened to many of the speakers you've recorded on here and my overall impression is the KEF LS50's lack the boxy sound I can hear on many of the other speakers. Yes, they have a little less physical bass, however with the lack of cabinet resonance it gives the impression that they are actually playing much deeper/lower in the bass, so they don't actually feel like they are lacking in bass at all, in-fact in an odd way it sounds like more bass (mellow and warm) from the LS50 unless you do a direct comparison. Tharbamar, would you say i'm getting the right impression of the LS50's in comparison to the other speakers?
@Tharbamar7 жыл бұрын
+shrodingersman I'm totally agree with you and I'm keeping them as my favorite mini monitor Speakers because tonal accuracy and sound staging is very hard beat at very price point. Thanks
@jnbraga677 жыл бұрын
Hi shrodingersman. I agree. And would go even further, the bass sounds much more well defined. I think that the cabinet design (curved front baffle) combined with the single uni-Q driver and rear elliptical soft rubber bass reflex port are responsible for that bass performance.

@totizedger8 жыл бұрын
Tharbamar Thanks for replying :) i think i'll go and listen to them with my Cambridge amp at a shop. Thanks for making these videos, i can hear the difference between many speakers where i now have a 685 S2 which i found like you said bright but that wasn't the biggest problem for me, i think the midrange was a bit recessed. I did notice a difference from my older Marantz PM6005 amp and the Cambridge, the Cambridge improved the midrange a bit which is good but the treble is not as detailed so that's why i find that it's hard to get the perfect combination with the B&W therefore i think it's time to switch to a pair of KEF speakers which has a good midrange

It’s good if your amp is 4ohm stable, if not it may not even enough power because LS50 will go all the way down below 3ohm, all my amps put 180watts or more at 4ohm load.

so Tharbamar, how do you rate the performance of a good AV receiver like the Onkyo in driving the LS50 (sound quality wise) compared to a dedicated amp ? is there a real difference that justify an investment in expensive amp ?
@Tharbamar8 жыл бұрын
+Mishal Harbi You need to check how good/big is transformer in the receiver because when the music is playing it may went down all the way 3-4ohm, when it happens any receiver or amp with smaller power supply can't keep for that kind of load. Don't bother with output rating, whatever you decide to buy make sure it has biggest possible power supply.
@mishalharbi7778 жыл бұрын
according to the specs, The onkyo TX-NR1030 has 135 watt per channel RMS with "high current" transformer technology and quality components since it is their high end AV receiver. It has plenty of power for the LS50 since it only needs 62.5 watt continuous power. I was lucky that the Onkyo dealer was clearing their stock for the new 2016/17 models and they offered the last TX-NR1030 unit they had for $560 (still being sold on Amazon for $1699). I immediately pulled my credit card :) . the sound quality, to my ears, is excellent but I don't have any point of reference (My old Bose speakers sounded great to me until I listened to the LS50 which completely ruined the Bose experience). Not sure why so many audiophiles opt for dedicated amps rather than high quality and reasonably priced AV receivers that are available now.

It's all about how clean the amp is. Watts mean nothing. THD is what you should be looking at. Onkyo receivers for most of the product lines are nothing special. Regarding their amplification.Your issue is power and lack of the proper type.

Not a big fan of the LS50, but I will say the LS50W sounds much better so amplifier matching is key. Keep using same songs btw it's really helpful.

When I hear metal music or hard rock on these and similar boxes and I fall into unconsciousness,I'll pull everything I've ever said.To buy boxes of several thousand euros and I have to choose the music I will play?There is no video on KZbin where they are testing boxes with rock music. Why? Because they then play like radio of my grandfather!

The idea of listening to speakers *through* other speakers is beyond stupid. All your hearing is the sound of your own speakers reproducing the sound of other speakers. Nothing about this will given an accurate representation of what the KEFs actually sound like. The microphone alone is a HUGE factor in what the video sound sounds like. Why is this not obvious to everyone here?

Quite untrue. Yes you won't hear the speakers EXACTLY as you would in reality, but listen to these videos through a good pair of headphones and you can easily spot the character and quality of the sound recorded.
