Off topic, but can we give a massive round of applause to Steph de Whalley who played Anita. That was her first TV role going from stage work and stuff, and the fact she is one of the most talked about points of the episode just shows how incredible her acting is. We need a campaign to bring back Anita/Steph de Whalley who is genuinely one of the most incredible people from that episode espevially with her chemistry with Ncuti
@rickkarrer837018 күн бұрын
Yeah, which is kind of short sided on Disney’s part, considering people aren’t going to keep their subscription if there’s no additional good content However, the one advantage Doctor Who has this year (over last year) is that Disney+ has a whole season of Who ready to watch, after the Christmas special (plus the 60th specials, which they had last year, as well). Plus, skeleton crew falls into the family friendly sci-fi genre. So, hopefully it has a good retention rate this year.

But it being number 5 on one day doesn't make it a huge success. It depends on the competition. What are 1-4 on that chart? It also depends on how many people are watching it. Jupiter's Legacy was number one worldwide on the Netflix charts for a whole week and stayed in the top ten for a lot longer than that because it didn't have enough people watching it to make it financially viable.

As to why it jumped to #5 in the US today, Americans don't really watch a lot of new TV (or any TV, really) during Xmas like the Brits do (the UK obsession with TV ratings and music chart positions at Xmas is so, so odd to us), so a late spike from US viewers should be expected.

@julieanngoodwin3012 күн бұрын
It doesn't mean all 3 million subscribers are watching , it just indicates the audience breakdown. Say 100,000 viewers on Disney on a given day, 25000 watch Doctor Who and the other 75000 is divided between for example 5 other shows on Disney averaging 15000 each, that would make it number 1 for that day, which sounds impressive but really isn't.

An analytics company which checks how shows do on streamers, showed that Season One did incredibly well in predominately black countries. Reaching number one in the charts, sustaining that high placement for several days. Is it something as simple as the lead being black? No idea. But an interesting fact. Disney might well see that as good news for worldwide use of their platform, and possibly seen in new subscribers?

The problem with measuring success in a streaming model is that it’s only really done through additional subscribers not just views. If Disney don’t think the DW IP is gaining them subscribers idk if they’ll care that it’s charting well. But, also worth remembering that Disney class DW as a low budget production, not like they’re pumping $100m into it, so hopefully the viewing success can send a message that it’s popular with users and press go on a renewal

If Doctor had received a tiny bit of promotion it would do wonderfully better than it did.

Disney only cares about people who sign up for the service when a new show is released but only if they keep their memberships afterwards. Its the retention rate they care about, nothing much else (sadly)... and that hasnt been successful for this era of the Doctor. That doesn't make it a success on Disney plus. You have to ask yourself what its going up against on the streamer and its not much at all. There is the Star Wars Skeleton Crew out at the moment and Marvels What If season 3 other than that there isn't much competition to speak of. What matters is how many people are watching it not its chart position. Skeleton Crew apparently is doing pretty badly in terms of viewership ( its pretty good in my opinion ) but Doctor Who is behind that in the USA charts. For example it doesn't matter if its number 5 if it only gets 250 thousand watches. We will know more when we get the third party Nielson ratings but I wouldn't get too excited just yet.
