@@lavam2745 Idk that they were supposed to date, and it would seem out of character for Eric to go with that, but Buddy def was meant to be a recurring character and the writers intended to use him to explore the complicated sexuality of the 70s. But that got scrapped because this ep got so much hatred from viewers uncomfortable with any depiction of homosexuality.

Idk about the comments saying he was supposed to date Eric. It's pretty clear Eric and Donna are the obvious endgame couple of the show, and I'm not that big on their pairing too. I was really hoping for Buddy to be a recurring character though, or even better, be part of the gang. I was really disappointed when i watched the next episodes after and he did not come back, and i don't believe he was mentioned again. :/

Sadly, we'll never know enough about Buddy with Eric (or Buddy in general) to make a fair comparison, but I suspect if Eric had more fully gotten over his shock (moving beyond basic friendly tolerance/acceptance/respect), explored his feelings and opened his mind more, he'd have found more chemistry than he'd ever experienced. The Eric character is so obviously latently bi.

I don't care that much about them not dating. But I am also quite annoyed that Buddy was written out. First of all: It's Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He's an amazing actor. How could they just write him out? Even if they did not want his character to date Eric. They were friends at the end of the episode. So, Buddy could've dated other guys.I wouldn't even care if Eric and Buddy were lovers or just friends. I could imagine great interactions between them either way.

This is one of my favorite episodes. I know in real life Buddy would have married/had kids/lived in the closet until he was 40. I like that in this show Buddy can be Buddy. I like that they were cool with him being gay. Eric was initially scared but he realized Buddy was cool and that it didn't matter.

I get that the time period was hostile and dangerous for gay men & lesbians, but it's so sad that just because of that stigma Eric lost the opportunity of a lifetime. Electric windows, if I’m not mistaken weren’t common until the 90s. And even then a lot of cars still had roll up windows. Nowadays you need to have the most basic bare bones rental car to have roll windows in most instances. In the 70s that would have definitely been some premium feature.

After reading thru the comments, yes, I agree that they should've kept Buddy in the show, but wanting him and Eric to date, I don't get. Eric is clearly straight. No instances give any hint otherwise, but Buddy as a regular could've been really interesting story telling.
