Golden Earing ("Radar Love") did a studio version of this around 1969 that may have been influential to this live version. The Byrds did a live version as a trio in late 1967 that was utterly astounding. The Byrds were the #1 American band from mid-1965 to mid-1966 and a big favorite among The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Jimmy Page, and top musicians of that time. Their big hits were "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Turn Turn Turn" but veered into jazz-rock, Indian, and electronic influences by 1966 McGuinn had one of the first Moog synthesizers in 1967. They pioneered country rock and Jesus rock as early as '67-68 and were a huge influence on The Eagles.

The studio version of this is completely different - with words - and IMO better, though this jam was fun. Jimmy was in the Yardbirds. The Byrds were a very influential American band with a trademark jangly guitar sound (Roger McGuinn using a 12-string). They began by covering songs by Bob Dylan and other folk musicians like "Mr Tambourine Man" before producing their own excellent pop songs, then pioneering country rock. Many of their members went on to become household names with other bands (notably David Crosby of Crosby Stills and Nash). Try the studio version of this and their songs "Turn Turn Turn", "Feel a Whole Lot Better" and "Hickory Wind" - which will give you a bot of an overview of their three main styles.

This was the later lineup of The Byrds. The Byrds experimented originally with Folk Rock and later became a psychedelic rock band. This was the country rock lineup of the band. This lineup includes the four guys; Roger McGuinn (the leader, who was part of all their lineups), Clarence White, Skip Battin and Gene Parsons. A lot of early Byrds fans dislike this jam session because it’s much different from the original in 1966, which includes vocals. Also the band you were thinking of, the Yardbirds were from London, England while the Byrds were an American band from Los Angeles.

Hüsker Dü has an incredible cover of this, a Hardcore Punk version.

considered by many (including me) as the first psychedelic song to hit the public. Have to love the Coltrane riff, but I like it better in the opening like the studio version

You're listening to an instrumental jam of theirs that is wildly different from the original album version. I love them both. The lyrics of the original are incredibly moving.

You should do the studio version too. It was one of the very first psychedelic songs ever from 66. This concert looks like it's from the 70's and is vastly different from the original song which has lyrics. This is just a jam session

Byrds were trippin here. Eight miles high was a hit song with lyrics in mid 60s. This recording was several years later. David Crosby, who co-wrote the original hit, had left the band. To hear the song as it was originally produced with David Crosby: kzbin.info/www/bejne/anrPaqRpbpyfgpI

Like everyone else on the planet imma say...check out the studio version. This was very cool though. Byrds were a whole thing. .. psychedelic country rock etc... and all wrapped up in tons of rock and roll history in SoCal at the time.

The Byrds did a great job with this song. I like the Roxy Music version of it much better. You should try it.

Birds, Yardbirds, completely different but back in the day they were my two favorite bands. This was a jam. Originally they were known for their harmonies and Dylan covers like My Back Pages, Mr Tambourine Man, etc.. The Byrds pretty much invented country rock in later incarnations. McGuin played a 12-string and his guitar fills and solos could be somewhat confusing. Too many notes sometimes. They were The Beatles favorite American band

I don’t know why they call this Eight Miles High, it’s a completely different tune, but a good jam. But you should listen to the studio version, it’s a great song.
