I share my thoughts about setting the table for Eucharist. Please remember that each parish has it's own customs, but the principles are the same. I also share my thoughts about the roll of the Deacon with regard to radical hospitality.

Most of the masses I have been too usually are set by the Deacon but I understand the poor churches have whomever is available.

Technically, you're correct, but this parish does not have a fully array for a deacon, and St. George's is very broad in this point in liturgy.

What kind of church is this?...Definitely not a Catholic Church.

It's the Episcopal Church, the American branch of the Church of England.

Dear Deacon, May i ask you a question about this ritual? I think it is interesting what you have shown. This ritual really connects people to God. Beautiful ceremony. xo

The presbyter is vested in chasuble; do you complement her with a dalmatic?
@dancertm
@dancertm 4 жыл бұрын
At the church where I serve I wear a dalmatic on high holy days like Christmas Eve and Easter, otherwise no.

@@dancertm Wouldn't liturgical purists say that's a bit of a mismatch, equivalent to having the presbyter fully-dressed and the deacon in their undergarment?

Thank you for this. Regarding the discussion at 8:30-9:45 of the video: I was taught from a young age that the reason we add water to the wine is theological and Scriptural, and it relates to the Crucifixion: "One of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out" -- John 19:34. So the wine (+ water) will become the blood (+ water) of Jesus.

Yes, there are many opinions and traditions surrounding adding water. The early church (outside Jerusalem) was more resurrection focused and would not have thought in those terms. So even at the beginning of home gatherings, there would be no unified tradition. Prior to Constantine, the church was diverse.

@@ThatDeacon Thanks for this! To be clear: I didn't mean to argue against what you said; I meant only to chime in with the theology I received, which may very well have been developed later in the history of the Church, especially given that there was no Scriptural canon early on.

@@ThatDeacon Indeed, at this point liturgical scholars are pretty unanimous in their view that there has been diversity in liturgical theology and praxis from the Church's earliest days. If I'm not mistaken, this diversity continued after Constantine. (Ambrose of Milan and his sacramental theology of foot washing come to mind... and, needless to say, differences in Eucharist theology were the stuff of Reformation battles). When it comes to uniformity of liturgical ritual, I believe it's not until Charlemagne (or at least Gregory the Great?) that it's imposed by Rome... and, even then, many local rites other than the Roman survived well into the 16th century (e.g., Sarum in England)... and even now (e.g., Mozarabic in Spain). Sorry to drone on, but I find this stuff fascinating. Anyway, thank you for posting the video! I found it very helpful.

This is a magick ritual taught by Jesus to his disciples.

Hey there Ryan: Naw, no magick. Think of it like a Thanksgiving meal. Every family has traditions just before eating and that's what I was sharing.

@@ThatDeacon It is a holy mystery, not merely a "Thanksgiving meal", this is theologically deviating from the traditional Anglican teaching. The bread and wine may not be "magically" transformed into the same physical body and blood permanently as Roman Catholic taught, but they are indeed consecrated, and through the Sacrament, we "may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood", and "dost assure us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us".

@@ThatDeacon And also in the Catechist (1662): "The Body and Blood of Christ, which are verily and indeed taken and received by the faithful in the Lord's Supper.".

@@bwilliamleo7872 Not really interested in a Eucharistic food fight, but one of the wonderful things about the Episcopal Church is the ability to embrace a wide range of theological thought. Concretion means to be set apart, and in this Christ is present.
