First story: cheesus crust, the audacity of this bastard. Killing quest NPCs and female NPCs that refused to sleep with him already made him a scumlord but then we have the IRL stuff like how he doesn't know the meaning of consent and then there's how he met his wife. When I heard there was a massive age gap between the two I expected something relatively tame like they started dating when she was 19 and he was 30 not... That... Second Story: That was a nice twist involvingtge evil princess, with plenty of foreshadowing sprinkled throughout the story, unfortunately, the problem with characters is that someone will always have a different interpretation of them and that player refused to see her as anything other than the strong independent woman who takes crap from no one and would raise Hell if seen as anything else. OP dodged a bullet for sure. Third Story: That DM wasn't a friend it was a walking talking toxic waste dump who did everything a DM shouldn't. Hopefully OP gets a nice steaming cup of therapy so they can get back into the hobby and move on from that nightmare. Glory Story: That sounds amazing, I'm so happy OP not only managed to cameo in his old campaign, but get to play what sounds like the best boss ever. Just goes to show saying goodbye to a player group isn't always forever.
@PaladinGear15 Жыл бұрын
That second story reeks of "if not every woman in your world is an angel then you're SEXIST!". As for her complaining that a woman is a minion for a guy, there's an entire race of people where the women are *always* superior to the men, they're called Drow, even the good aligned goddess of the Drow consider men to be lesser.
@spectrelead Жыл бұрын
Pretty much all of this!
@etcetera1995 Жыл бұрын
Yyyeah but a problem with your argument: the Drow aren't feminist, tho. The rest of everything you said is absolutely *correct,* but the Drow aren't feminist, from either a Watsonian *or* Doylist perspective. Watsonian, or in-story: *they're still racist slavers.* Feminism is supposed to uplift all women so that they and men are *equal,* not make one group of women superior to everything. Doylist, or authorial: ... They're scary spider dominatrixes who are all eeevilll. They're someone's fap fodder from the 80s and a bad commentary on women's liberation. That's not feminist, that's still something that serves a male-centered perspective. ... I could write a whole essay going into some actual nuance for you, but this comment is getting too long already lol
@MWH12085 Жыл бұрын
And it odd how Drow society is rather casual about murder and violence despite being female dominated.....so much for 'the world would be a much better place if women were in charge.'

@@etcetera1995 I didn't say anything about the drow being feminist... It's just that given the lore, the women are and have always been superior, but I didn't say it was any feminist "high five, girls! giiiiirl poowwerrr!" reasoning behind it.

Time for my very late, probably unpopular take on the reveal story. We don't have enough information, but it seems like a few things for me: The DM probably male, the player who through a fit female. So she was probably noticing things he didn't, like: -did he have any other female NPCs in the story who weren't "barmaid #3" They didn't seem so upset that she was evil, but that she was a minion. So possibly the only strong female character in his world is taken down as lesser and not independent. A character that the PC possibly thought was inspiring. I think they overreacted too, but I also think if you are having an argument with someone and you say, "You don't like, then leave." Don't be surprised when they leave and then go whine on the internet about it.

For the NPC reveal one... I have learned that many people won't see someone as a vilain or evil if one these conditions are met: One: The NPC is female and they are a simp/weirdass activist Two: They see such tactics as normal or part of the story and don't consider stoping to ask themselves what's going on (often, they will question IF the good guys are the good guys but won't question the vilains) Three: They, IRL, see these tactics as fine for getting ahead of something and feel like it's normal (I've actually met one, thankfully it's somewhat rare) Four: They literally can't think for themselves and can only make the right choice if they are told what IS the right choice (sad but you wouldn't believe how frequent this is. Just grab a history book and you'll see what I mean) Five: They hide behind "Logic" So... yeah >.

1st story; it went from cringe murderhobo to FBI OPEN UP! Seriously bossman needs to be in prison, that poor woman. 2nd story; well the clues were there that that princess was up to no good, just sucks that that player ruined the twist and the campaign because "buh cool strong female characters can't be evil and can't work for a man" which, oh where does one begin with this 3rd story; yeah sounds to me like that was a sadistic DM OP was playing with, basically forcing everything to go grimdark because "it makes the story interesting" and making players uncomfortable is funny to them. I hope OP can find a better DM that can give them a more wholesome experience 4th story; it's just beautiful, glad OP was able to play a bit with some old friends, that had to be spectacular

Unless you and the rest of the table aren't serious about the game and are mostly using it as an excuse to get together (which is fine if that's what you all want). But if people are serious about he game bringing up real-world topics in-game interrupts the game and breaks immersion and is unwelcome.

Some lack of context on the second campaign. I can see players assuming, say, that if they were introduced to the princess first she must be the one they're supposed to help, and it's possible the setting felt dirty enough already that it trumped the fantasy assumption that virtue is better than pragmatism. That doesn't mean I think that reaction was justified, but it might explain why several people were surprised the ruthless manipulative princess was also in league with evil forces and they weren't supposed to be helping her steal the throne as the better candidate. Feel like I'm missing all kinds of context in the way of "session zero" information with that other player: it seems like the campaign was designed to be one in which player characters would have limited power, very low social agency, and would be exposed to all sorts of fairly scummy behaviour and none of the mentioned players actually wanted that. (I probably wouldn't either - although it would make a good excuse to go murderhobo if I ever wanted to do that in a game other people were playing.) That said, I am very curious as to whether "the gatekeeping from new players" meant gatekeeping away from new players or whether the new players were doing the gatekeeping, because I'm genuinely interested in what an example of the latter would look like. ...All of that said, the important question isn't "Am I crazy?" because if you're asking that question the answer is probably somewhere in between no and yes. (I'm assuming the position that rationality is in relation to the outside world - in a setting where logic doesn't reflect reality, that logic isn't rational either.) The important question is "Is this situation causing me to no longer feel sane, and do I have a good enough reason to tolerate that?"

Or You had the solution in the Cursed Item. Start small (heh). Character does something wrong. Roll Fort save. Part of you is noticeably smaller. Whyyyyy are there idiots who think a "strong female character" = evil? or that it matters if their boss is a man. how petty can you be? XD it drives me absolutely nuts. the dm dodged a bullet with that one leaving if she thought the other obviously evil character was "Strong." there's no telling what else she would have been triggered by. and i get the sneaking suspicion that the strange siding against the prince, might have had something to do with her, but that's pure speculation on my part. *shrugs*
@PMbarbieri Жыл бұрын
She didn't think "strong" equals "evil", she simply saw the character as a strong woman and didn't see her actions as evil, and didn't like that such a strong woman would be a minion for a man. Like a lot of people who think people like Dolores Umbridge of Bellatrix Lestrange are strong female role models instead of a dictatorial asshole and an unhinged simp respectively. It still tells a lot about this person, given she apparently doesn't see anything wrong with falsifying informations and killing people on a whim: to her, those might be necessary actions for a woman to rise to power.

@@PMbarbieri its just a correlation I noticed XD that a female can be an evil witch, and some people don't bat an eye, (even encourage the idea) and calls them strong, but if we were to swap rolls no one would call it empowering.
