Someone should put together a chart with character traits and point values to definitively test for your character being an edgelord. If you reach a certain number of points, your character is an edgelord and must replace traits with happy and friendly positive traits until their point values passes below the threshold.
@JmantheCanuck Жыл бұрын

I played edgelords... thrice. 1st was a scarred Orc Fighter who partnered with an Aacokra Monk, 2nd was a Bard veteran with PTSD, 3rd was sheltered noble Cleric running away from a curse that plagued their family and followed them. All three characters had good inter party relationships since they had the party's back I wouldn't refuse RP hooks when party members threw those my way.

I was thinking the same thing. For a community that loooooves their tropes, edgy gets a bad rep. Things like the guy's family having "a family secret" that was more like 8 or wearing dark clothes is harmless. Saying to a character he doesn't want to settle down until he's completed his mission is common sense in and out of character. Like did the dm want him to just retire his character or were they hoping for non-adventurer household rp for the rest of the game? 😂

When I DMed I had a younger player with ADHD who would frequently drop out mid session, even in the middle of combat if he was rolling bad or frustrated. My solution was to give him a cursed sword. The sword contained the soul of a formerly sickly wizard who was concerned with survival. So when he dropped out I would have it that his character agreed to let the sword take control. The sword would mostly cast support and crowd control spells, still helping in combat while not taking the spotlight from the other characters. It seemed to work well and they stopped complaining when the player dropped out mid session. If the player was a no show and the party wanted to continue I had quest at the guild hall for them to earn gold, monster materials to make better weapons and mercs that help them for a cut of the reward.

Lol, I loved the green story. To be honest, I played my edgiest ranger recently. She isn’t that edgy but she’s about the amount I play for context. She was a fey wanderer. She’s human and I went variant human. Gave her the fey touched feat for it. Her rough backstory is that she fell into the feywild as a child and, with the weird time stuff from that realm, when she returned, her entire family was gone. A lot of time had passed and her family members had all died out. So she raised herself in the wild. The edgy part is that “something” followed her back out of the feywild and is canine shaped. She doesn’t know what it is but it scares her and it keeps her wandering. I play her a little reclusive but willing to lend a hand and take a risk for others if she thinks it will be helpful. She wears….a red cloak. Lol. Yes I designed a red riding hood character. I make a lot rangers and rogues. They have their figurative demons to fight but I always try to keep them open to being helpful because it’s a role I the player prefer. For a list of the various types of figurative demons I make for them, I’ll list it out. First, he is a drow with a disconnect from the culture he is perceived of having as he is surface born. He both does want to does not want to learn more. Second, a tabaxi with a tortie pattern and is male. While his main issue with remaining with his family group is that he prefers more independence the other part is that he can’t have children. His pattern and being male means he is infertile. He decides to leave and become a storyteller for his community instead, though his main job is that he does contract work for candlekeep and is a field researcher for them, cave diving and ruin hunting. Another is an orphan but she was adopted by a dragon who raised her to greatly enjoy pranks but is kind hearted and really only does these pranks to people who are mean to shopkeepers and serving staff. And I mentioned red riding hood for my next one. Now one of my most recent he was an astral elf who left what remained of his family because the faction they were part of lost out on a power struggle. He made a new home as a refugee and struggles with the grief of losing all his loved ones, a wound that has been reopened as his newest home is invaded by demonic forces and he and the party he is in just barely escape. He still deals with the grief but he was also a mentor to the two other party members so he tries to keep of a facade of being strong and cheerful (they are adults and so technically not his students anymore but he is far older than them and they were, at one point his pupils so he still kinda tries to live up to that role in their lives). He is probably my most depressed character and is supposed to be a story of dealing with burn out, ptsd, and grief.

So when I have a player missing a session, it really depends on group size. For my 5+ player group, I'll generally run their character during combat encounters, while having them "fade into the background" during roleplaying bits. If more than one is missing, I'll have them off doing something else. For smaller groups, it usually means we don't run and we get the night off. Either way, I will never let a PC die if their player isn't there for it, since they're nor making the decisions that may or may not lead to their death.

You know what? I'll say it. Edgy characters can be fun as hell! You can add a bit of edge just to spice up a character or you can go the "so edgy it's just funny" path. First Story: Having a Spare player is stupid, you need to have a full player or as you said, some one who joins in as a guest for some sessions, as addition to the other players. If some of my players can't play do I handle it deppendent on the story we play, sometimes I swap in for the Player and being a passive character, sometimes I say, k we look for an other date, or I let the character disapper for the session. An other thing that I do is making oneshots for the others with different characters. 2nd Story: If he know how, he could even roll good when he has to roll in the open. Making Legit rolls where you roll a special outcome is easy. 4th Story: Someone have to show the Edgelord some of Green Arrows stuff, he wears Green and he is Edgy...
@PrideOfFantasy100 Жыл бұрын
First story seems like it ended well at least. For me, I tend to do a mix of things. Have that PC do something else, cover the rear (fighting enemies the party doesn't deal with) or just be autopiloted if we start back in the middle of a fight. For the second story... That's sus at the least. Needs to have him roll in the open like Doge said. If I was the DM I'd just buy one of those rolling boxes that you put the dice in and have it be where players roll for more 'fun' for the group when it comes to fights. That way you avoid calling people out individually but can get a better set up. Third story is just a massive jerk and straight up should have been kicked outta ops and ops (at the time) BFs life. Dude sounds like a straight up bully of the worst kind and I doubt that he'll get better without real consequences. Last story sounds like the guy wants to be edgy without realizing what edgy is. Probably has got it in his head that edgy is synonymous with awful. I have played with people who live delving into the edge for fun and they were a blast to play with. Edginess isn't always bad but own up to it like Doge said XD.

Instead of having a spare player, I usually try to have an extra player above what the campaign is built for. Since I typically have more friends who want to join than the number of players I usually run with, it also helps me get in an extra friend who otherwise may not get to join. If somebody can't make it, I don't need to power down encounters or alter too much, and I work with the missing player to have their character work on some background task for the session. For as long as everyone can make it, I only have to do a bit of extra prep to power up combat. No matter what, though, I don't run boss encounters nor major story beats unless everyone can make it.
@jamison85 Жыл бұрын
Usually, we plan sessions on days where everyone can play. It increases the length of time between games, but we're not in our early 20s anymore. It does sometimes happen that one of us still has to cancel last-minute due to unforseen circumstances. I don't like progressing the story too far without someone there, and we'll usually cancel or play board games instead, or even try someting else...that's how we got started on Pathfinder 2E.

How we deal with absent players? In our Supers game every Saturday night, if a player says they don't feel well or can't make, we make so that their character was called to say, head back to Wakanda or deal with alien tech in the UK. If one or more are missing on a Thursday night game, we just either hang out or stay home.
@TigerKirby215 Жыл бұрын
I don't see anything wrong with having a spare player. It's like having a more consistent guest in-case of emergencies. I've never been a "spare" but I have played the role of an emergency guest character when the DM wanted to run a tough combat (hard roll play, not a lot of roleplay) and needed extra bodies to compensate for missing players. With that being said I do agree with Doge that having a character who isn't as involved as the others in roleplay situations ain't great, especially when they're disruptive to other players. This is why my DM friend runs for his minimum party size +2, so that if one or two players miss out we can still have a decent session as long as the combat isn't too intense.
@Wolvenwargmusic Жыл бұрын
So when if a player is absent I put it to a vote with the group. If the group goes on, we all fill them in on what happened so they're not lost. During they session the character of the missing player is described as being in the DM protection bubble.

We've rolled damage dice for our DM many times (with their approval), but I'm in a high-powered high-level campaign and damage rolls can be 2d8+3d6+12d6+20. So it saves time having the players rolling it and adding it all up while the DM works on something else. Having to roll huge numbers of dice isn't unusual for our group, my 27th level Rouge can fire six arrows in a single round and the sneak attack damage from that alone is 84d6.
