I wonder if this sort of television editing is exclusively catering to the channel surfing crowd, who are flipping around and never start watching at the start of a thing, so the show edits in recaps every three minutes so each wave of surfers can know what's going on. My dad is the worst at flipping channels constantly, and he does watch this stuff, and so the recaps let him watch about 5 programs simultaneously. I'd rather watch a single cohesive narrative, but when I was growing up he'd always change it immediately when a commercial came on and go back 15 minutes later. That or they've adjusted to the mobile device crowd, and know most of their audience only looks up from their smaller screen enough to catch 1/3 of the content, so they can repeat it all twice without those viewers noticing.

AimzS94 - You can't possible be that dense... but now I realize that is the obvious, yet unfortunate, reality of this current timeline. He is obviously commenting on the over-the-top levels they go to (in this sketch) to highlight the ridiculous nature of these 'American' style shows... ...and that even when taking those (already) extreme levels even higher (to acheive maximum parody), The History Channel is *still* worse. The crux of his point lies in the absurdity of that fact. Also, if you're going to criticize others, while being so incredibly ignorant - and hilariously cocksure - at the same time; maybe *you* should rethink your logic, or lack thereof, before you make yourself look like a fool agai next time... *Side Note: As an American, it beyond embarrassing that such shows even exist, and mainstream ones for that matter - that are no doubt viewed and loved by many who are happy to be spoon-fed such pathetic content as they shell out hundreds of dollars a month for it. They willfully accept their lives in general being dumbed-down more and more every day, and allow themselves to be controlled and 'trained' what to think, how to feel, and who to hate/be scared of. It's pathetic, shameful, and disgusting, to be blunt about it.

I'm American and I thought this was HILARIOUS! Plus, I like British TV too, and more than just Doctor Who, though that is brilliant

Original punchline be damned, it just occurred to me how much impact proper editing can have. You're giving MacGyver here a few scenes with next to nothing, and he makes them into a masterpiece.

I wonder why they made like a 2:16 long video out of 10 seconds of action.

The thing that always sticks out to me from American shows like this is from Worlds Wildest Police Chases, they show a car crashing or 1 second from crashing just before And After the ads and the presenter says "You won't believe what happens next" then after the ads they show the clip...........I would believe what happened next because you basically showed it before the break

While everyone else is talking about reality television, I'm just here wondering why Brian called the gift shop employee Daddy, if the giftee is both of their aunts. Surely that would make them brothers? Then again, perhaps that's why the gift shop worker looks confused and says "Eh?"

Can someone explain the "if it were a quote it would be (aposite???)" line to me? Obviously i dont even know what they're saying at all.
@notme2222 жыл бұрын
"Apposite" means "particularly relevant or fitting to the topic." It's meant to be a bit nonsense like the rest of the sketch, but they're basically saying: "What kind of gift do you want?" "The kind that's really appropriate."

Ha ha ha, great send up of vacuous "reality" shows and the way they edit banal footage into viewer bait with a few drum beats, vacant stares and unjustified insinuations. Not quite sure why people in previous comments think this sketch is only sending up American shows, I'm sure it's the same for British shows, and it certainly applies to the rating-winning potboilers thrust at us here in Australia.

How did Robert know that they had the same aunt based on the fact that if a woolen dog were a quote, it'd be apposite? Also, why would a woolen dog be a quote? I am confused despite all of the narrator's commentary and exposition.
@schmullusschweitzer996311 жыл бұрын
Apposite, as in apt. The joke is that "how about this woolen dog?" is a concise and apt quote to use in the context of the "coming up" preview to show the viewer what's happening in the show. It's making fun of the fact that reality shows always throw in expositional lines to be used in the previews.
