Reason why the credits showed the previous yakuza games was cause this was the final game with the old engine. Dead Souls basically exists as one last hoorah for the engine before they moved on to yakuza 5's engine (and then later dragon engine)

Since this is a game that was only exclusively released on the PS3 and the English version was pre-Yakuza 0, here is a guide of old localizationisms: Morning Glory was originally Sunshine Orphanage (not to be confused with the Sunflower Orphanage). Chief (what Hana calls Akiyama) was originally Mr. A. Kiryu-chan was originally Kazzy. Florist was originally Kage. All Japanese text weren't changed to English text. They were just subtitled instead (NOTE: This doesn't apply to PS2 era Yakuza games because they were translated).

Nico is so disgusted by Kiryu’s original nickname Kazzy. XD It was actually referenced back in Yakuza 0. Kiryu uses a pen name "Judgement Kazzy" while writing stories about substories he did for Dolce Kamiya’s radio show.

That it's still a 10+ hour video after being edited down from 14+ hours oh wow. I'm so glad you tried (and completed the main story!) of Yakuza Dead Souls. This was definitely a wonderful, if unexpected surprise for the late Halloween stream - from the Kiryu cosplay intro to that substory reaction and Dead Souls karaoke experience, I'm glad you managed to experience it, Nico. Admittedly the game has it's jank, PS3 (or elsewise), you either sacrifice FPS or stability. But it still has Yakuza charm and hopefully more fans of the series consider giving the game a try as well. Hope your voice gets better after the needed rest 👍

Long comment warning about this game for the long stream (while it may be the black sheep that nearly killed Yakuza for the west, it’s also my personal favorite that I platinumed.) The main problem of Dead Souls was the framerate on PS3 (it never crashed for me on PS3, though.) Controlling the aiming in first person with the left stick is because of Japanese legacy controls, so Japanese players are stuck with that mindset for shooters and I was used to that when I played this game. Camera wasn’t a big deal, since you could center the camera and the game is built around using the strafe (the auto aim strafe with the headshot buff skill makes all difficulties, even Dead Souls, a breeze as it pretty much targets anything on the screen with the first upgrade from Gary and regular pistol is really strong if you can mash and it has infinite ammo and good range.) In this game, the best weapon upgrades are earned from beating the substories and the lady doctor (Fireworks Shotgun was an incendiary grenade launcher but as a shotgun and Smoke Shotgun was a regular grenade launcher and they just used shotgun ammo so you have big capacity.) 1:53:40 - Boot Camp is for Partners, where you can level them up for secret skills here that make them better and there are also special heat snipes and one of them is called Tandem Massacre/Barrage, which looks like a John Woo scene (the leveling system has a hidden points system, so it encourages replay with every Partner.) 8:28:48 - To explain why this boss seems hard, is mainly due to the weapons as they weren’t upgraded enough, not enough donations to unlock more weapons like the Gatling Gun and Grenade Launcher/grenades, and no Assault Rifle DLC (the handcannon is also the worst gun due to its capacity and it’s worse than the other guns in general.) The aiming auto locks if a zombie is close, so the Fireworks shotgun prevents anything from coming close and you can aim freely and the boss AI goes after you if you go to the edge of the streets and it can’t see you, so strafe shooting with the AR or the sniper as it charges at you makes it easy on any difficulty besides DS (my left stick kept drifting, so I could never aim and had to beat it by strafing on DS.) To inform about DS, zombies get into a Rage state and can knock you down and when enough surround you, they will stunlock you to death and healing and other armor does nothing because you can’t get up (Rage Armor set from beating the game multiple times, prevents grabs, flinching, and knockdown but it’s not the best for defense.) The reason why I bring this up, is because there’s EXP boosting armor that lowers defense and if you beat the boss, you can’t change armor or heal. 8:44:17 - This section is the hardest part in the game if you have that or no armor on and it’s nearly impossible with the best armor and maxed out Kiryu on DS, because the monster just ignores the turret, overheating, and it will hit the car until it runs out of health or you die and you can’t upgrade vehicles (bosses have enhanced defense and more health while hitting harder and QTEs are a third of a second, so you need to be Spider-Man, too.) Amon is a cool fight and it’s unique, but it’s easy and hard at the same time. As mentioned during a stream, it’s zombie Amon, but he’s Wesker, has an instant kill, and can leech life. The thing is, to get to him, you have to survive through a RNG dungeon of 30 floors straight and you start over if you die and ammo runs out fast without using the pistol (especially on DS.) This game is like RE with the crazy post game weapons, where beating it on DS gives you an infinite rocket launcher, beating Amon gets you the Amon family’s orbital laser remote as a weapon, and funnily enough, the Golden Gun is the worst version in this game with the only positive thing is that you don’t reload (this game is balanced around guns.) This game’s one and done features, is their Climax Battles system, which lets you reload fights, like bosses and you get rewarded for improving your ranks and Subterranea. Subterranea are Randomly Generated Roguelite dungeons and is part of what you need to beat to get to Amon. The Partners were neat, but practically useless on the two hardest difficulties (the upgrades made them all pretty good on the other difficulties, though.) It allowed you to fight alongside some special characters and upgrade them and their weapons, such as Date, Arase, and even Bob (Bob sucked at base level, though, as he had a modified, unupgradable fireworks shotgun and can knock you down, no heals, and can just stop fighting randomly.) 10:14:08 - The reason why they did the credits like this, is because this was ‘Like A Dragon Of The End’ and they emphasized that this was ‘the end’ of everything up to that point, which included the initial PS3 engine and the increase in enemies that continued in 5-Kiwami (Kenzan was after Yakuza 2 classic.) Fun fact: getting Unarmed Mastery doesn’t work during Kiryu’s brawling section (it lets you kill enemies with melee attacks.) DD’s likeness actor/VA has voiced Grimoire Weiss in the original Nier (other than Asagi whose likeness actress/VA was Gogo the young bodyguard in Kill Bill, the other likeness actors for Nikaido, Pops, and Nagahama haven’t ventured in media outside of Japan.) All of the boss monsters are based on Yokai and mythological beings (Onraki is Onra, the demon from the Ki castle in Kibi province, for example.) Unfortunately, Dead Souls/Of the End did too poorly back then, so they still have no plans of remaking or remastering it because of that (the director thinks Kenzan getting a remake is more likely and that’s still in an uncertain state.) Last misc. info was that this game got delayed because of the tsunami that hit Japan in 2011, so Dead Souls just had more and more bad luck (I’m glad it still released, since Ryuji and Majima was playable finally and Akiyama had the best signature weapon because of infinite ammo, high fire rate/two guns with range, and headshot buff with strafe makes it so that he just sweeps through even on DS.)

I am ecstatic that you finally played this game. I stuck around on the stream through the end of Majima's part then I got really tired and had to bow out. I am so glad you managed to beat the game, even with an all-nighter. I adored your reactions to all the stuff here, especially finally seeing you doing Get to the Top and that Daigo substory. This was just gold. I've just seen LPs of this game, but if it ever gets remastered or Kiwamied for modern consoles I'm picking it up and playing it the second it comes out.

I like how almost everyime Nico wonders if something went wrong with the emulator went wrong, the answer would be, no, is just the PS3 baby. Also when it comes to Pistols, generally auto and semi-auto refer to the loading mechanism rather than fire rate. A non-automatic pistol would usually be a revolver

The greatest twist in all of Yakuza: RUBBER TEETH! But man, this was a fun stream to watch, even if I had to break it up by character over the last few days. And in all honesty, I do want to play this. I genuinely hope they remake this game where they fix the camera, balance out that difficult boss, and more to really allow this game time to shine. I feel like it could do better than originally if they did so. And it'd be fun to see an LP of a remake where all the side stories, the hostess for Ryuji's karaoke, and the Amon fight all done.

He was already interested on playing Isshin, but only after he gets further into the main series so he can recognize the characters (remember, the game came out before he even played Yakuza 4. He didn't even know who Akiyama or Saejima were ffs), even if their identities are obviously not the same. Not sure about the others, but seeing how RGG releases games faster than he gets to play them, I don't see him adding into the pile with even more spin-offs tbh.

Plus, this was a special stream because of Halloween and he has other games he’s playing/will play. Edited - Ishin Kiwami is a remake, for Ishin being a PS4 launch title in Japan, but Ishin was never localized for a WW release (Kenzan still isn’t available in English, despite being the first Yakuza game on PS3.)
