Speaking from personal experience, the Velvet Fuzz into the Mick side of the D&M Drive is a wonder to hear. You guys have helped me tame my pedalboard in a big way, and encouraged me to pick up pedals I’d ordinarily steer well clear of (such as fuzz and chorus) to the point where they are now integral assets as part of my playing. I’m pretty sure that’s the very definition of inspiring. Keep it coming!

I love a bit of subtle chorus, stereo always helps. Gives that Wide sound. For a nice rich chorus I prefer analogue to digital, though digi can be nice too. My #1 chorus is the Arion SCH-1 from way back (the SCH-Z is very similar)

in mr. vex' defense, the FuzzFactory is a very versatile, useful pedal once you take the time to learn how to use it. i've had mine 12 years and i feel like i finally have a glimpse of how to use it intentionally, and all of a sudden i'm liking it. i have had this dumb thing on my board for 12 Fuzzing years and i finally know how to use it to get from one sound i like to another sound i like.

You should definitely try Devi Ever and Death By Audio fuzzes. Catalinbread guys also do some cool insane fuzz like the Antichthon and the Perseus. I had the Teaser Stallion for years, is one of the first oscillating distortions ever made (2003-2004, I guess), like a ProCo Rat, but with a footswitchable killer oscillation.
@matthewshanley15496 жыл бұрын
Velvet Fuzz is the first fuzz I've owned, not to mention, the first I've used. I love it, but have NOTHING to compare it to yet. I've always been curious about everything that Catalinbread makes. What have you heard that could lean towards this REALLY BROKEN sound?
@e3super26 жыл бұрын
Matthew Shanley It's not from Catalinbread, but check out the TPS videos with the Hudson Broadcast that Mick mentioned in this video. It does the spitting, broken sound in a really cool way.
@gfgf93006 жыл бұрын
I think Devi Ever and Death By Audio are the best choices if you're looking for a really "broken sound". They make pretty weird and experimental pedals, like delays and reverbs with fuzz option, etc. But those pedals can even be useful in more conventional music (Nels Cline of Wilco uses a lot of Devi Ever and Z-Vex pedals). Catalinbread stuff is also great, they don't do the Teaser Stallion anymore, but they still make a lot of cool fuzzes like the Perseus (low octave "velcro" fuzz) and the Antichthon (an insane fuzz with trem-like oscillations). Also the Karma Suture is an amazing fuzz inspired by the Harmonic Percolator (used by Steve Albini). Catalinbread stuff is not "fucked up" like DE and DBA, they're very versatile, but you can make them sound crazy if you need.

I used a fuzz probe for years. The trick is to tune it to the key that you are playing in so when its just making crazy noise its in the the right key. You also want to start the base tone low so when you step on it it doesn't destroy everyone in the room.

What's the difference between a Fuzz and a Muff? I sort of know as I have one of each. I feel like a Fuzz needs an amp that's already breaking up to work well whereas the Muff feels like a complete fuzz and overdrive package on it's own. I love both but find the Muff a lot easier to dial in and use. The Fuzz is a bit unpredictable. Some days it's awesome, some days you're tweeking everything in sight to try and make it sound right rather than a just square wave buzz. I just wondered what makes a Fuzz a Fuzz, and what makes a Muff what it is?
@ThatPedalShow6 жыл бұрын
They’re the same thing. A Muff is a type of fuzz. Big Muff by Electro-Harmonix typically uses 4 transistors, where a Fuzz Face uses 2. That’s a part of it for sure. But they’re just different kinds of fuzz. Cheers!
@GuitarDaan6 жыл бұрын
Muffs style fuzzes also have no problems with buffers so you can put a octave pedal or TS style pedal in front. Also Muffs sounds pretty good with humbuckers too compared to other style fuzzes, which typically sound better with single coils. That being said Muffs always sound less... "Fuzzy" to me, more like a distortion almost. I prefer germanium fuzz faces and tone benders.

Guys, I know this goes against every thread in your tone souls but have you ever considered doing a video where you would consider pedals around $100 US dollars. Specifically speaking about fuzz and chorus pedals. Apologetically from Chicago. That being said, I think I’m going to get the Boss CE 2w. I could definitely use some help on the fuzz; I’m leaning towards the Outlaw The General. I was also considering the Visual Sound H2O v2 Chorus/Echo pedal.
@ThatPedalShow3 жыл бұрын
Hello! We've never wanted to make TPS about budget because we think it's the wrong question. Every other channel on KZbin is obsessed with price and they can tell you what we don't have to - you can get 95 per cent of the tone for 20 per cent of the price with that stuff. We're more concerned with the final five percent and that's where it gets expensive. More helpfully, we heartily recommend Visual Sound stuff. It's just not that easy to get here in the UK. Cheers!

Just picked up an army green veteran pedal, amazing pedal and loving the boost side!
@MrACangusyoungDC Жыл бұрын
I bought the Veteran and the strength is mostly in the smooth dail which makes it uncompromisingly close to a fuzz face if it's all the way on. Dail it off to make it the versatile pedal that it is. I'm also really happy it had the boost because I never leave the fuzz on alone. Any other fuzz pedal would have bored me without the boost. Now fuzz is all I know. The boost is a range master clone as well so very classic rock with right amp and setting. The bias could just be a little bit better. The dying batteri spittery is done better on other pedals or for real in vintage ones.
@MrACangusyoungDC Жыл бұрын
Favourite thing might to be minimise the fuzz side and just make the boost take over and be the mythical modded treble booster Tony Iommi used to get his sounds for at least the first three Sabbath albums.

Not a dullard amongst the pedals today, every single one uniquely different in function and tone. ZVEX is a company that despite how much I like fuzz does stuff that is so a) awesome and b) beyond my capabilities to make musical, but everyone who can and does deserve respect for making it look easy. I'm hoping for an octave fuzz show soon that looks at the various types of octave fuzz. As great as the Octavia is, it is most certainly not the only game in town and would be nice to see the progression of that type of effect.

Love your show! I normally use Fuzz as a special effect. I like using simple germanium fuzz’es placed after buffer and before the lead channel on my Mesa. It compresses the attack and makes the tone “bloom” into screaming as it “dies” out. Very cool effect, but of course a good idea not to over use it. Initially I started to do this with the Joe Bonamassa fuzz, but after spending a lot of time trying to find another fuzz that does this well with a smaller footprint, I’ve currently landed on a cheap mini pedal ordered at AliExpress. I know this is “That Pedal Show”, but I really wish you would cover some stuff for us using two and multi channel amps and effects loops.

Great timing for this video. Sweetwater delivered my Big Muff Nano Pi this very day, had to pause the video halfway through to play some unadulterated FILTH! Rawr! (edited for over excited typo)

I’ve been playing my DBA Fuzz War for 4 weeks now. Probably the most diverse fuzz pedals I’ve played so far.

Nothing makes me gurn with joy like fuzz. However my fuzz factory always gets lost in my live mix. I'm excited to watch this video.

The Fubar (aka Fuzz Bear) from Blackout Effectors does some pretty crazy things. It's worth checking out. I love what you guys do! Cheers.

Time to do a guitar focused shootout to show, if and how, various examples of a single specific guitar can change the sounds you get from your pedals. I'd suggest starting with a bunch of telecasters so we can see if Dans guitar has actually been forged by Hades himself.... or if its just a "tele" thing.

Been watching for awhile.... has this been done already and i missed it ?

Dan's Tele is quite well known as a particularly potent one. That can be seen in the “Our Guitars and Gear” episode about it, as well as the episode in which Mick and Dan compare their guitars to vintage Fenders, though most episodes demonstrate it in one way or another.

You can keep your fuzz pedals. I'll take the Collings.

Still got my original 1973 colorsound fuzz in its box, unused.You are most welcome to try it out for a comparison of these newer pedals. Great show as usual.

It made me laugh when you guys started by saying "This episode is not about vintage fuzz" and then it zooms in on the board and there's a Mojo vibe. I was thinking "Or is it???"

Today was the first day, in 12 years of owning a FuzzFactory, that i have ever played my FF and thought, "i should try to turn that knob that way to get more of that sound" and actually had it do something that sounded like i wanted it to. then coming home and watching mick messing with the knobs on the fuzz probe, having watched the entirety of his FuzzFactory experience ( but with two more knobs, cause, you know, the 5 knob was too simple...) was very satisfying.
