+intrsoul Yep. I've been a fan for a long time. I'm not a fan of custom build guitars because of the variable results, but Collings do factory builds like you expect a custom guitar to be. Off the scale good. To me they feel like old guitars, but new. Magic.

I've been able to kick the tires on Fano, B3, Collings, Trussart, Grosh, Suhr, Friedman, Bad Cat, %13, 65 Amps ...not to mention cases of boutique pedals and G and F custom shop. The workmanship on them is like nothing I've seen on any other solid body. it's understated but perfect. The finish isn't thick, but it looks like panes of glass until the guitar is old enough to telegraph some pores just a little. Which lets you know that the finish isn't thick. They are pin straight, and I had 8 of them used over the last several years and not a single one was anything other than dead straight and when they acclimated to my basement playing area, none moved. they already have every single bit of finish work done to them from the factory - the fretwork is polished and perfect. The nut work isn't even the slightest fraction of a hair high for safety, and they play clear as a bell. 100 guitars in the last 5 years of unhealthy buying just out of curiosity and then unloading on reverb and nothing else was like them. If gibson's custom shop cared a wit about quality, they would send every single person working there to collings for a four year apprenticeship. I've had 15 gibsons - the very best of those was nowhere close to the worst of the 8 collings in any way. Spent my first of buying thinking "how could they ask more than gibson does for a les paul standard" and until getting them and being an amateur builder and seeing how much better they are, I'd never have understood it. they are so good.

I had a faux tortoise shell guard on my '97 Les Paul Jr TVDC. It disintegrated in the Malaysian climate and started letting off gases sufficiently corrosive that the top three strings in a new set of 10's rusted through and snapped while I was away for a long weekend and the guitar was left out on a stand.

+zaphodfender Pretty much all the stuff we use regularly in the show Zap. Mick will use Two Rock SP35 or Victory V40. Usually a TS type, Dumble type and Klon drives. Dan tends to use Lazy J 20 and/or Hamstead Artist 20. King Of Tone, Carpe Diem. Pedals change a lot. Dan is never without the KOT, Mick never without a Klon or Klon- alike. Cheers!

I was looking at the Vintage copies just the other week as the Gibson LP juniors are out of my budget for now. I like single coil guitars the best but nice to have something a little different. I ended up buying a nice T-style Michael Kelly a guitarist friend asked why after all these years of playing would I want a lesser guitar make? well my answer is I play anything that feels right for me. I'm still looking for this style of guitar. Mick you never revealed the price you paid compared to what you would have paid for the Gibson versions vintage or reissue at the time. interesting how every guitar seems to have a story 😎

+Doc Tiberius Sounds great Doc - it's an endless journey and it's always throwing up surprises. The guitar was more expensive than a new Gibson but less than an oldie. Guitars are so personal. I didn't start out wanting a Junior, but the Collings came about through great people and relationships, and as much as it is a fantastic guitar, its personal / experience / human value is worth every bit as much to me. I am such a fan of what they do. :0)

Thanks for the kind words. I think what it is - Mick here - is that a lot of people just don’t get much attention in their lives. For whatever reason they’re not heard. So saying something nasty on KZbin feels like they’re having an impact. That and rebelling against the better side of their upbringing that will have encouraged a bit of tolerance and understanding. So many people never got any of that, or they didn’t listen , and they’ve grown into being entitled people with dreadfully low self esteem. As much as the negative comments upset me (as somebody who’s spent way too much time in dark places) the thought of unhappy people feeling negative all the time upsets me more. Or they just don’t like the guitar or me. Might be the same thing ultimately. :0)

Mick, I’ve just bought a white 290 DCS with exactly the same spec as yours, and it has the tortoiseshell scratch plate. Happy to swap for your black pick guard if you’re still looking to change.

@@ThatPedalShow good lad. I just realised how old your 290 DCS YT video is - Blimey, time flies. Also just noticed that you played your middle 8 riff from what later became the Peter Gabriel studio sessions with you and Dan (both fantastic songs). I’ve written a few originals since lockdown (first one just went up on Spotify and Tidal etc under band name ‘Skullduggery Ltd.’, called “Lockdown (Circuit Breaker)”, so now I have some other stuff to play in guitar shops instead of AC/DC, Eagles etc. It’s quite liberating! I’m a TPS patreon and own a bunch of t-shirts and coffee cups etc to keep you gents in gainful employ. Keep up the good work son.

Thank you SO much for all of that. I think people assume Dan and I are rich and all this stuff just comes easy to us. Be assured that the various revenue sources are what keeps TPS on the rails and we are massively grateful for it. More so that we seem to have cultivated a likeminded group of decent humans who are passionate about this stuff. It is truly humbling. Thank you!

@@ThatPedalShow I was a journalist for 10 years before moving into corporate (it was financial, FT-type stuff, but I really wanted to do either Guitarist mag working for Nev or a car one - “Maxpower” actually offered me a job). My guitar mates always say that you and Dan should record a show from my place if you ever come through Singapore - my place is a mini version of your current Schwangri-La room. So I know very well that you guys are working amazingly hard, hence owning lots of TPS merch. Massive respect for knocking on 250k subs (I assume you know that musicradar is doing a poll with you on it (Chris Buck flagged it last Friday)). You guys are a ray of sunshine in a gloomy landscape. Also huge props for your personal campaign on men’s mental health: people do notice and do appreciate it.

Hey Mick, I have seen players wrap their strings around their tailpiece that isn't cut for a wraparound. Doesn't this lead to excessive string slippage on the tailpiece?
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 7 жыл бұрын
+hawg427 Bonamassa does it like that. Quite a few people do (if you're talking about a regular tune o matic bridge and stop tailpiece set up). It enables you to screw the tailpiece all the way down (which people say is good for tone), and not have a very acute/potentially string snapping break angle over the saddles. It has a marginal effect on the perceived string tension too. Note I say 'perceived!' The tension of the strings remains exactly the same, but a little extra total string travel will increase the 'bendiness'/'slinkiness'/however you want to describe it. Tuning remains great if Bonamassa is anything to go by!

Where would one look to find yearly.differences between am vintage reissue 62.
@ThatPedalShow
@ThatPedalShow 6 жыл бұрын
Eh? Do you mean the differences between that age of reissues and the current ones? They’ve gone through two revisions since this one - 2012 ish saw them go very specific in terms of historical detail (mine would be closest to the 59), and then this year they’ve gone more general again. The last ones 2012-18 will be the best ‘new reissues’ they make outside of the custom shop for a while Cheers!

I've swapped out the OE pickguard on every guitar (and bass) that I've owned that had one. The aesthetic of an instrument is one of the many reasons I want to pick it up and play it!

I have the first one - serial number 1 - it's the only guitar I would never part with and its true - if you have a DCS you don't need another pickup - it's weird and because you always think you'll need the neck but roll off the tone to 6 or so and you're good to go

That’s a really good question. I don’t actually know! I should measure it - I’d always assumed it was proper Gibson scale, 24 7/8. Cheers!

@@ThatPedalShow Hi Mick, thanks for that. I'm pretty sure proper Gibson scale length is 24 3/4 or 24 6/8! Regardless, sounds wonderful. Thanks as always!

All this talk of using 11's because 10's would be all over the place. I'm using 9's.... I must have left the place, bought a boat, and kept sailing.

+Colin Nickel Music It's a purely personal thing Colin. I have quite a heavy - you might say unrefined! - right hand. And left for that matter. I know plenty of people who get great control and stability out of 9s. Not me though! Thanks for watching!

I hear you, sometimes I go to dig in and am left wanting. Should string one of my guitars up (probably the Les Paul) with 11's and have a wack. Will need to dip my delicate finger tips in pure platinum and rhinoceros extract though. Love the show!

+Colin Nickel Music Worth a try, but It'l feel pretty stiff! One thing that has a big effect on me is that I play a lot of acoustic guitar. A very traditional guitar with 13s much of the time. You have to commit to it, and that spills over to my electric playing. Poor technique probably!

Very true, thanks for the tip. I've been playing 11's and nylon on my acoustics forever also. I think I just need to suck it up as I've been told there's extra tone in those meaty strings. I think they hide it near the left side. I'm no Eric Johnson's battery tester, but I imagine there is some difference. Your guy's playing is great though! Lots of dynamics and tone. Don't need to play fast to play well.
