For those who didn't know; this movie is based on Cyrano de Bergerac, the play about an older man with a large nose, who helps a younger man, woe the woman he loves as well. The character Steve Martin plays name is the initials of Bergerac's name; C. D. Bales = Cyrano de Bergerac = CDB. The woman in both is also named Roxanne. The young man in Cyrano is Christian; or Chris in the movie. See how this all works? This was one of my favorite movies in the 80s; I love the 20 things part the most. As far as the song Roxanne; it came out before the movie, but the theme of the song doesn't match the theme of the movie. The song is about a man trying to tell a woman he's in love with; not to go out at night. Roxanne is a prostitute, and the 'Put on the Red Light', talks about the Red Light district of Paris. The songs doesn't go with the themes of Cyrano; so it wasn't used. Not at all a missed opportunity at all. In fact; it would have been a bad idea to use that song, as it would cheaten who Roxanne is in this movie.

Yes, that's Shelley Duvall from The Shining and Popeye - and Daryl Hannah from Splash, Blade Runner & both Kill Bills; the dumb as a stump firefighter afraid to talk to Roxanne was Sarah Connor's roommate's boyfriend in The Terminator and one of the fighter pilots in Top Gun. The sweet, clueless, older firefighter was played by Michael J. Pollard from whom Michael J. Fox chose his stage name. Pollard is famous for the Star Trek episode "Miri," the John Wayne movie True Grit, as well as for Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and co-lead in Little Fauss and Big Halsy (1970). Firefighter Chuck is best known to me as the groom in John Hughes' Sixteen Candles and especially as the lead's partner in the vampire detective series Forever Knight. The mayor was played by Fred Willard, first famous from his TV roles on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, and Forever Fernwood, and Fernwood 2 Night. Also known for WALL-E, Anchorman, Best in Show, This Is Spinal Tap, and Modern Family, I liked him best on Everybody Loves Raymond. I like that Steve Martin adapted his screenplay so closely to the original play that he even included the beginning's swordfight between Cyrano de Bergerac and his bullies! Please add All of Me (1984) to your list! Stars Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin (9 to 5, 80 for Brady, Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse), a physical comedy about reincarnation and body-swapping. I promise you'll love it! More suggestions: Steve Martin and Martin Short in Father of the Bride (1991) and its sequel, and. . . probably for yourself rather than the channel, the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building (about to begin its third season with cameos by Paul Rudd), starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, with Nathan Lane (from Mouse Hunt, The Birdcage, and The Lion King), a comedy about two old men (one a washed-up theatrical producer, the other a has-been TV actor) and a free-spirited young woman. The two old friends bond with the woman over their shared love of true-crime podcasting and decide to start their own together, inevitably getting them mixed up in the murders they investigate, either implicating themselves or becoming targets for murder due to the threat their probing of clues and evidence poses to the real killers. Both physical and dry ironic humor. I LOVE my Chicago Manual of Style, although it's out of date now. It was a graduation present.

In the play, the heroine is named "Roxanne", so they kept it for this update on the story. It's a cool name, so I sure don't blame them for that! The song is by The Police and came out in 1978. It might have taken some people out of the movie to hear the song, and, when you think about it, the tone of the song doesn't really go with what they're going for in the movie.

Great reaction! 😊 This is one of my favorite Steve Martin movies. He and Daryl Hannah have great on-screen chemistry. And I forgot that Shelley Duvall was in this as well. Another great Steve Martin movie that I very highly recommend is the 1988 comedy "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels". Looking forward to your next reaction. 😊

"Ten more seconds and I'm leaving!" "What did you say?" "I said: Ten more seconds and I'm leaving! Wait a second! What did you think I said?" "I thought you said: Earn more sessions by sleeving." "Well, what the hell does that mean?" "I don't know. That's why I came out." Fun Fact: First comedy feature film of Australian director Fred Schepisi. Debut theatrical feature film of actor Kevin Nealon. Fictional Reality Fact: When C.D. (Steve Martin) is consulting the plastic surgeon about getting a nose job he holds a picture of the nose he wants up beside his nose. The picture is of his real nose. Make-Up Effect Fact: Technology lent an important hand in providing Steve Martin with the imposing, legendary proboscis designed by makeup designer Michael Westmore. A specialty lab made plaster impression of Martin's own nose was sculpted into a genetically appropriate, larger version. This was then cast into a mold from which they made a supply of foam-rubber noses, at least one a day was used for filming, which were applied with spirit gum, edges feathered with rubber, and blended with Martin's other facial make-up. Make-up artist Frank Griffin for Steve Martin said: "This was, in some ways, one of the most difficult jobs I've ever done because we had to match the skin color, with very little surrounding make-up to blend into. If it just ended abruptly, it would stick out like a sore thumb." Lost In Adaptation Fact: Steve Martin was a driving creative force behind this movie, as both writer and star of the comedy. Martin's inventive comic mind was turned loose as he undertook the considerable challenge of creating a 1980s comedic hero based on the witty work of playwright Edmond Rostand. Martin adapted the classic, retaining the triangle dilemma, but moving the story to a modern-day trendy ski resort town. Martin remembered: "I was about twelve years old when I first saw the play Cyrano de Bergerac (1897) and I found it to be very compelling. I kept thinking about it; the story and structure are flawless; the play is moving, beautiful and funny. About four years ago, I started thinking that it also has everything you could want in a movie romance, high comedy and a great story. It seemed a perfect vehicle for me to update. But the play is very, very 19th Century, especially in the joke department. And there are lots of swords, lights, and monasteries, you know, things that don't really function much in our lives anymore."

“What’s up, I’m Roxanne, I’m an astrologer, and I never f***ing learned how to read” I’m so glad you got to see this, it feels like a forgotten movie. It’s goofy and not the best romcom, but it’s so nostalgic and sweet. The fire department is so much fun, Shelly Duvall is so lovely, the adaptations they made are so well done. In the original play Cyrano is an accomplished sword fighter, hence the opening bullies fencing with golf clubs and tennis racket scene :) the newer Cyrano movie with Peter Dinklage is worth a watch, I thought I’d find it cringy and uncomfortable, and like nothing would ever compare to Roxanne in terms of adaptations (loose or otherwise) but it absolutely slayed me

So glad you watched this. Roxanne has always been an all time favorite movie of mine since I first saw it in the early 90s. It is a beautiful location, it was filmed in an around Nelson, British Columbia as far as I know. I just rewatched the movie last week and I still love it. Steve Martin is one of my favorite comedy actors and his character of C.D. in Roxanne is probably my favorite of his roles, C.D. was such an interesting character. Even though Chris was an idiot you couldn't help but like him. The scene where C.D. destroys that bozo in the bar is classic! I have always considered Roxanne an often overlooked gem and I recommend it often to people. I am glad you watched and enjoyed it. Edit: sorry, once I got to the review part of the video you had figures out where it was filmed lol. Didn't want you to think I skipped out on the video.
