I remember watching That's Entertainment when it was first in theaters. This segment was one of the high points -- the other was Fred Astaire's tap dance duet with Eleanor Powell.

I was only 18 years old when I watched That`s Entertainment at a movie theater in Tokyo in early May, 1975. I was so fascinated by Esther Williams and she has been a very important part of my life since then.

I remember seeing some of those scenes on TV when I was a kid in the 1950s. Spectacular. They don’t make movies like that anymore, and they don’t make stars like Esther Williams either. She was probably my first little-kid crush!

She meant a great deal to my mom and her generation. RIP

My mother loved Esther Williams. Especially how her hair never got messed up.

Esther was not 'discovered by MGM talent scouts' but by Billy Rose, the impresario and club owner. He signed her for the Aquacades of 1939 in San Francisco after the 1940 Olympics were called off. Afterwards she married and began training as a fashion buyer. MGM had to beg her to sign a contract, and she insisted on two years' coaching in acting and singing before her first star role in 'Bathing Beauty'. She had no theatrical or musical experience, not even at school- she was all sports. Never was a great name born more reluctantly, and nobody ever challenged her. Sonia Henie had desperately wanted to be a star, and had a couple of minor rivals. But Esther, whose box office eventually outpaced that of Henie and every other lady except Betty Grable, was on her own. No rival studio could find a performer with the courage, persistence or choreographic intelligence to carve a slice of Esther's pie.

I can only imagine what it was like to see an Esther Williams picture in the early 1950's. Even now, I am mesmerized, awe-stricken, "let me get my breath" fascinated by what Esther, and MGM, have for her to do next. When it's over, I think, "Oh, come on Stanley. You have just experienced what is ultimate camp, haven't you?". But, then...

@peeteeclark Esther Williams do not do any of those high dives. They were done by a Yugoslavian diver named Helen Crelenkovich. She died in her thirties due to cancer. If you look closeley it is obviously not her.
@jackanthony9768 жыл бұрын
I read that Esther was perfectly capable of doing the high dives and actually did them in her first few films. However, Esther developed an ear infection from doing the high dives therefore she was prevented from doing any more high dives. I don't remember where I read this maybe in her autobiography...I am not sure.

Now ladies....This is class! No baggy pants, tattoos or cigarettes hanging out of her mouth with a childish shitty look attitude written all over her face, Esther Williams had more talent in her small toe than most of these wanna be bimbo's representing Hollywood and the music industry these days, but then again if the industry demanded more from their actors and singers then we could possibly attain this kind of LARGER THAN LIFE talent again. Just saying!
