Dad of 4 here. I'm 1,000% on Veronica's side here. My wife and I chose to have kids; our decision, our cross to bear. There have been rare occasions where I've had to take off last minute, but that was between me and my manager to work out. I sure as hell wouldn't try to guilt someone else, childless or not. While I love having children and do NOT regret it in the least, I WHOLLY support those that don't have them, REGARDLESS of their reasons why. I hate the societal pressure to get married, have kids, yadda yadda. You gotta do what works for YOU! I've told my kids the same thing: as much as I would love to eventually have grandkids, have kids ONLY if YOU want them. Same with getting married; do it ONLY if that works for you. The only person that you MUST live with for the rest of your life is YOU, so do what makes YOU happy (as long as it doesn't harm anyone else).

Used to get abused this way at my last place of work, especially when Christmas came around. "Oh, you aren't married and don't have kids", therefore you will be the one person that will be in the office by yourself from Christmas to New Year's because everyone else has a family and is traveling for the holidays. That's right, I don't have any family, except for my parents and my brothers and sister, nieces and nephews and my grandma. But they weren't "real" family, and got really pissed when I explained it to them as the reason I could not attend Christmas. I finally booked off Christmas the one year, and holy f#ck, all the b!tching and complaining from all my co-workers who tried to pressure me to drop my request and come in and work, because it's not like I have any family like they do. I told them all to f#ck off and deal with it, I quit right after New Year's and never gave this business a second thought through the years

We do make some adjustments for our people with children (we work from home and if one of us has to step out to pick up a child, that's never a problem; somebody else can cover anything that comes up). Major holidays and vacations are first-come, first-served, with a dose of seniority. I have seniority, but I'm also usually kind enough to shift things around a bit to accommodate others. Christmas week is a wasteland of nothing anyway, so most of us take off.

When emergencies with kids happen, I'm always willing to step in and help a coworker out. Your kid just threw up at school and you have to go pick them up? Sure, I'll cover for you, as long as I don't have important plans. If it's NOT an emergency, like a holiday or a trip, I'm a lot LESS willing to help out. Basically, I treat any family excuse the same way. If it's an emergency, I'll do my best (to a point) to help. If it's not, I'll only cover if I feel like it. The only difference is that I accept that kids have "emergencies" much more often than other family members.

@@ytadventurer9170 Definitely, just as I'd help ANY coworker in an emergency. I'm talking about those who don't think they should be given those duties AT ALL, because they have kids. As a mom, I understand that field trips come up only a week or two before the event sometimes. However, don’t get mad at your coworkers for also needing time off. Get mad at management/HR for not finding a way for letting you both off. Get mad that there’s not enough staff. I’ve planned a vacation with my husband (then boyfriend), and then one coworker got fired, and then the other coworkers tried to make me feel guilty and give up my leave because they had to pick up after the fired coworker. That was before kids. I went on my vacation.

@@alexandraphelps4020 WRONG! Nice try, but it’s a cop out. All field trips are planned within the first month or so of school even if the field trip isn’t until Spring. Buses need to be booked well in advance and most venues require a reservation and deposit. Reservations to venues and reservations to buses go fast which is why each grade level will know where they’re going well in advance. All events are on the school calendar for the year. So, “as a mom” you can easily find out where your child’s class is going weeks, months before the event instead of “acting” like this just came up. And besides, normally, one MAYBE two parents are needed to chaperone. Sounds like you’re volunteering and framing it like you NEED to go.

I’ve got kids and would never do that! You simply ask if they can change and if they say no you accept it and move on. I HAVE missed out on stuff with my kids, but they understand I have obligations as well and I do my best to manage all of that while still spending time with them and going to events. Besides, people are way more likely to trade days off like that when you are respectful and not demanding.

I have 2 weeks off booked at the end of July/beginning of August. With the way my shift pattern works it means I'm off for 26 days. I've had it booked off for three months and I have zero plans for those days. I might sit in the garden, I might pay video games, I might go away on a short break to Paris. Who knows? What I do know is I'm off those days and I don't care if your kids have stuff you need the time off for, they aren't my kids. The only time I've reorganised my holiday time was when my co-worker's wife was pregnant and had a really difficult birth and he needed time off to help her. That was important enough for me to reschedule. The woman nearly died, I'm not a monster. I'll help out in a situation like that, but anything less serious get's a no from me. (Mom and baby recovered fine and everything worked out for the best, so it was all good in the end).

Me…. The major perk of being single, no wife/girlfriend/kids/baggage, is I’m free to book my holidays well in advance because there’s no other people involved or compromises or waiting for others to get their situations cleared, so within days of the new holiday year I’m already booked my main days off, first in with the booking gets priority, the flip side is I’m usually expected to fill in for when people are off unexpectedly, but then again, any overtime I do I can convert into holiday time

What I can't bear is the fact that I plan my important days off nearly a year in advance and other ones come up with a request just a few days ahead although they knew it for months. And when not getting what they want pulling the kids card and saying I can take another day off because I have no kids and no responsibilities as I am a citizien second class for not having kids.

Had a coworker try to get me involved in a conversation with some residents. (I work in a nursing home.) Asked me if I had kids. No. Am I planning? I'm single, so....no...I'm not about to open that can of worms. Do I want any? Absolutely not. "Oh but you'll come to love them when you do have them!" "......I already can't stand adult humans...why would I want mini humans? I have no desire for any romantic relationships and I'm not gonna be a single mother while working for a laughable wage. I can hardly keep myself alive right now. Let me be responsible for my own demise, not for the demise of others please." What's funny is that the old folks who overheard this were supportive and praised me for being a responsible person. That coworker doesn't like me XD

When someone says, “ . . . but the school didn’t give us notice until just recently,” or some crap like that I just remind the parent that that’s the choice they made when they decided to have kids. I remind them of how they criticize me and my husband even “pity” us sometimes for choosing such an “empty” life (seriously 🤣). Vacation versus obligation. We’re not that selfless. We like vacations, free time, me time, us time, romantic evenings, romantic mornings, socializing, our savings bank accounts, a neat house, hobbies, nice everything, so we chose not to have children. They chose to have the “greatest joy and reward” in life. They chose what “really defines a person” 🤦🏻‍♀️ So, go be a parent and tell your kid that grandma, aunt, uncle, or the neighbor is going to their event, but they’re going to film it so mommy can see it 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yep. My best buddies have kids, and school fees, and after school classes, and clothes to buy, and school uniforms, and trips costing $$$$$, and have to attend recitals/games/concerts etc whether they like it or not. They drive soccer mom SUVs, are only available for a beer if we book it weeks in advance, and when we DO catch up, all they do is piss and moan about their lives. Meanwhile, I just traded my ageing Boxster for a new MX5 RF. Which is parked outside my paid-for condo. I literally do what I want, when I want, where I want, with whom I want. It makes me wonder how many parents, if they were given the chance to go back in time and NOT have kids, would go through with it and stay child-free. I suspect the actual number would be very significant.

It’s definitely not all or even most of them, but there’s this small subset of parents that seem to think reproducing has entitled them to special benefits at the expense of others. Ironically, these are the same parents that treat their children like extensions of themselves and not separate human beings and try to shove them down a certain path in life with zero consideration for the child’s interests.

Working in the plumbing and heating industry, I dealt with this during our after-hours on-call rotation. Some guys would say that they couldn't be on the schedule because they had kids and all the activities that go with that, such as sports. One company I worked for, my call partner, was one of those guys who would constantly forward everything to me. He was also best buddies with the boss's kid, so nothing was done about it. I left when I started to get really pissed about every fourth week turning into a 90-hour week. The checks were okay, but it was mentally draining.

At a previous job where I was office manager it was understood by my boss and my co-worker with children (small office) that I took the Olympic fortnight off. I love the Olympics and that fortnight has always been sacrosanct to me, so my leave for the next one is always booked the day I return to work from the current one (doesn't matter now, I work from home so the tv is on constantly). All the rest of the time I took my annual leave around my boss and co-worker's school holiday needs. Then we got a new full time worker in, she had children. The first year she booked and paid for a two week holiday during the school summer holidays without checking first to see if anyone else was off (my other colleague and my boss both had children). The two weeks she'd booked was Olympic fortnight. Suddenly it was everyone else's problem that her husband's employers closed for two weeks during the school holidays and that was the only time the whole family could take holiday together. She tried to bully me into giving up my two weeks so she didn't have to cancel her holiday. I refused. My boss backed me she was livid but, strangely, she somehow found a way round the problem.
